All star break should be used to rest and heal. Especially when he can not yet resume full team participation and play RF

I think we would all like that but the guy has tons of pride. I think he's going to try to win the derby. Hopefully he only take a single PA in the game.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Maybe the derby will actually get him out of the funk a bit and feel good hitting some bombs.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Back to Melky, and the fact that he's gone cold as mentioned above, maybe THIS is the best time ever to negotiate a new contract... Please no... The Jays can't keep fielding a team full of DHs. It's nice for the team to finally get a contribution from him this season but it would best to cut losses when it's done. Most I'd ever give him is a q.o. and even that's not definitive. Need to see how the rest of the season plays out.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 But I'm thinking we might get him for 2-3 years with an AAV way less than that...and what if he heats up in August and goes white hot. Could mean millions more in any negotiation. Dunno, just thinking aloud.

It's just that a team can only afford to field so many defensively limited players. You'll have EE at first, you'll have Lind at DH and maybe a 2nd DH to platoon with him. So in a vaccuum it's might be a good deal for Melky but in the larger context, I don't think it works.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 If he had a shred of pride, and wasn't such a prima donna, he would opt out of the all star game all together and focus on getting healthy. I guess it depends on how you define pride. Seems like an extremely prideful player to me.

Get a home town discount, if possible, but then trade him when/if the time is right or we can't fit him on the roster. But I don't see another viable LF option right now who's MLB ready, and Melky IS an all star. EE and Lind can continue to platoon 1B/DH. And we trade for a 3B or 2B who doesn't die vs splits and Bob's your uncle.

I wish he wasn't playing to be honest, for this very reason. I don't give a s*** if any Jays are represented. Team needs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all start stuff

The appeal of signing Melky is that with no one ready in the system, the alternative is the open market or trades and we've seen how well the Jays do with those. I'd still prefer to take my chances and offer nothing more than a q.o. but I wouldn't be surprised if the Jays went with the devil they know.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Oh for sure, I'd be okay with a QO. And honestly, after what happened this year to so many QOed position player, I think he takes that $15M, or whatever it turns out to be for next year.

Unless Colby really turns things around it's a safe bet they won't extend him which makes me think they'll offer Melky an extension so the outfield isn't in shambles. If you're willing to pass on Melky (at this point I don't think a QO would keep him around) and knowing Colby is gone are you comfortable with Gose/Pillar as our outfield options going forward if a trade/FA market is thin? Letting Melky walk and then trying to replace him seems redundant. What kind of LF are you hoping to replace him with?

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I don't think the Captains participate, well, that's what Blair and Barker said on Baseball Central today!? I think they are wrong. There are ten participants. Each captain has named three, they will name another today plus themselves that makes 5 per team for a total of ten. http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2014-07-08/home-run-derby-2014-roster-players-participants-all-star-game-puig-jones-stanton
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Bautista isn't hurt. Wouldn't he be playing the OF if he wasn't?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Wouldn't he be playing the OF if he wasn't? I think he's playing in the infield because of roster management atm.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 What funk, he's only scuffling for a couple days now, and he hit a deep fly yesterday that would've been out in most parks, followed that up with a screamer straight at the LF'er. He's batting .212 in his last 10, dropping his avg 12 points and being extremely frustrated along the way. I'd say you're in a funk when you repeatedly smash your bat in the dugout when you finally hit a line drive... right to the left fielder. He needs to let off some steam by smashing some bombs at the derby.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 He was supposed to start in RF Sunday past, but you know, EE went down Saturday. Didn't realize that, I figured if he wasn't at 1B, he'd be DHing and pushing Lind to 1B.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Yeah, Gibbons was quoted in the paper that Bats was moving back to RF Sunday, Bats told Gibbons after EE's injury that he'll play 1st/3rd/RF where ever they needed him. Good on Bautista. I think the lineup is better off with Reimold in there instead of Dan Johnson. As an added bonus, it makes Wilner look like a tool for talking up Johnson.
sh3156 Verified Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Bautista isn't hurt. There was one at bat yesterday where it looked like his back was tweeked, he kept trying to stretch it. It looked like he was in pain, and the commentators mentioned it as well. If there are any issues, these are separate from his hamstring. Kevin Barker on baseball central mentioned how much of a bad idea it was to play Bautista, who has had back issues in the past, at a position he isn't used to. For What? To Get Mastroini in the lineup? Or To get Reimold in the Lineup? Or Navarro. If he is healthy he should be back at his position. He is the heart and soul of this team, you put him where he is best, and move everyone around him.

He does them in the dugout. He does them during at-bats.
shortstop Verified Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Candy, agreed, I see him stretch or whatever all the time... but the at-bat yesterday (only saw the 1), he did not look comfortable at all & his swing seemed off & he wasn't able to generate the same fluid movement we're used to...he still hit a hard liner to left but something was off imo...could be wrong...
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Honest question... What gives Kevin Barker credibility? Nothing. He talks out of his ass and goes off on tangents. Baseball central is now ruined.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Lawrie, Lind, Edwin, Reyes, Jose, Colby....make you realize how lucky we were in 92 and 93 on DL front. I didn't check back but with WAMCO nobody missed any time all season that was serious all season that I can remember. Same for core nucleus in 92. NYY faring no better if Tanaka is TJ - that would be a shocker.
