TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 YEs but those teams never had J happ and liam hendricks starting..........It may not apply to all teams, but this team is not going to have a chance with this rotation over the long haul, Buerhle is going to regress some. I am not talking about a specific payroll number, this starting rotation could blow up pretty quick. 91 Twins had Allen Anderson, David West, Mark Guthrie, Tom Edens, Willie Banks start 58 games. 1993 Phillies had Ben Rivera start 28 games. The 1997 Giants had a rotation of Estes, Rueter, Gardner, Vanlandingham, Alvarez and Osvaldo Fernandez. 1998 Padres had Sterling Hitchcock and Pete Smith (not to mention a way way way way past his prime Mark Langston), 1999 D-Backs had Omar Daal, Reynoso, Brian Anderson and Todd Stotlemyre. 2008 Rays had Andy Sonnastine, 2011 D-Backs had Zach Duke, Amando Gallaraga, and Barry Alright. Outside of the 2007 Cubs every worst to first team I remember had piecework or well below average starters on their team. It's usually part of the reason they were in last the year before.

Check out Todd Stottlemyre, Dave Stewart and Jack Morris, 3/5ths of the starting rotation on the 1993 team. They combined to be barely above replacement level. So teams have won with Happ and Hendricks-like expected performances before. I know what you mean but "History also shows doing nothing almost guarantees another disappointing season and empty seats." Sounds like you were just trying to be a pain in the ass rather than come up with a real point.

Meh, those are exceptions, and only the RAYS were AL east, either way, even if we make the playoffs your no winning the WS with this rotation, may as well upgrade to have a realistic shot.

Contending teams with shallow SP staffs as their weakness (as opposed to an offensive weakness) are relatively better off because they can relegate #4 and #5 to the pen. Whether Hutchison can last to the post-season as #3 is another question altogether.

I know I probably missed a few but I included every single worst to first I could remember...so exception would be a poor choice of words 2. Hendricks wouldn't make the post-season roster today, and Happ would be in the pen. 3. The AL east is a terrible division

The AL east is a terrible division >>>> Which is why we are in first with the rotation we have and maybe able to stay for the long term with Happ and Hendriks/Stroman/Nolin . The team that has the ability to make enough moves to get good is the O,s. They have the offense and have the pieces to get a shark. Not enough but some of their other starters can come around.

Wieters being out for an extended period makes the Os a lot less scary.

The AL east is a terrible division every other day baseball after the wild card means 3 very good starters and a killer pen can take you a long way. this board will be seriously insane if we make the playoffs this year. Boston had a freak year this year and over performed. can this be the jays year of the freak?

AL East isn't bad any more it's +1 in wins, and last night some impressive wins over top NL opponents. We are in first because we have three solid starters and the best offence in baseball. The claims that it's a "terrible" division are basically saying that Tampa Bay and Boston are terrible, and I don't think they are all that bad for last place teams. If they don't tank, by end of year this might end up being the strongest division. Jays are a lot stronger then people are giving them credit for. Just Hutch, Cabrera, Buehlre, and Francisco are major upgrades.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Rogers has showed there priorities when they spend 5 f***ing BILLION dollars to put psychos with knives on their feet all over Canadian television for the next 12 years. Meanwhile the Jays don't get an extra f***ing penny more to improve their team.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 10th is plenty high, especially when the 25th-28th teams all made the post season last year. People really have to stop calling Rogers cheap, its a business And a very profitable business at that. Let's not pretend that Rogers couldn't double payroll and still not turn a profit.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I hope they don't try to go under slot for the first round, they have close to $6 million to spend on their first round picks and I don't want to see any Chad Jenkins or Deck McGuires with such high picks. If they go under slot it needs to be on the 2nd rounder. If they are picking that high they need to swipe the kind of elite talent that is only available when you are picking towards the top. Plus the Jays have two ping pong balls this year so don't freaking miss.

Let's not pretend that Rogers couldn't double payroll and still not turn a profit. you think they are making $150M+ a year? I'm pretty sure they are not. The last time I actually read the quarterly report the entire Media division was only showing a $64M profit. Sportsnet is the star of that division but it's still not all the Jays bringing in money for them.

I think they make that and more. just not seeing it....May 2012 Sportsnet showed a profit of $40M for the year. I just don't see the Jays being a huge profit for them to make up for a loss for everything else they do.

And that was just Sportsnet hurl, the Jays made money on top of that, the Dome made money and Rogers saved money on content and taxes by owning the Jays. Plus that doesn't include all of the people that had to expand their cable pack to pick up Sportsnet1 (I can't be the only one). Lets not kid ourselves Rogers makes money hand over fist off the Jays. Payroll could be significantly higher and they could be still be way in the black.
flafson Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I'm sure it's worth while but you make it a lot more than it really is. They maybe break even on the Jays. The reason why they invest in the Jays is because they want to be competitive in the content they are offering which is always why they spent 6 bill on NHL rights.
