The_DH Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I think attendance is based on success only. Toronto is not a great sports town.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yep, it was pretty much the worst possible off-season for both the casual and serious fan. If somehow on a miracle this team can make a run at the division, I think we'll see the numbers go way up. When the Jays had the big winning streak last year to get back into it if I recall, they were drawing in the 40,000's for the last few wins of that win streak. Its a fickle town. If the team starts winning and generates excitement, the attendance will spike big time. A 6 or 7 game win streak to get into first place and then stay there would get the buzz back. I'm glad the Jays didn't make any trades this off season. The no decent free agent signings was surprising though.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 The fans came and then Rogers didn't spend. f*** them Taking on ridiculous contracts via trade counts as spending.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yeah I heard that too. Almost had a game close to 900k this week I think. Just curious what the numbers are compared to last season and the few before that as well. those are big numbers
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yeah I heard that too. Almost had a game close to 900k this week I think. Just curious what the numbers are compared to last season and the few before that as well. Their game with the Oakland A's on Sunday afternoon drew an average of 630,000 viewers to Sportsnet, the biggest audience since the opening week of the season. That's 110,000 more than what the team averaged last year during a season that started with big audiences and finished with mostly friends and relatives watching. Equally telling was the almost 500,000 who watched the first two games of the A's series on Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 360. Those channels tend to draw smaller audiences, mainly because they have fewer subscribers than the main channel. An example of how far the Jays could go came Monday when they attracted an average audience of 836,000 for their game with Tampa Bay. That was the biggest ratings number since the home opener and a serious eye-opener considering that this it's still May. A pennant race would easily produce audiences of more than a million.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 ridiculous contracts that have us in first place! Take that sourpuss..lol I don't get it. Jays fans were salivating at the Yankees and Sox not two years ago for being old, expensive and vulnerable looking forward and you're willing to walk down that same path. f***ing idiotic if you ask me.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 those are big numbers Amazing how many watch on TV, but are unwilling to go to the games.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Sold out Sunday against KC ... Not bad.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Sold out Sunday against KC ... Not bad. It's amazing how a cowboy hat can bring in so many extra people.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Walk up sales must have been pretty big on Saturday and today.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 It's amazing how a cowboy hat can bring in so many extra people. A hat that looks really cheap and probably cost them next to nothing.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Walk up sales must have been pretty big on Saturday and today. With they way this team is playing and nice weather with the roof open, attendance should be good for the weekend games at least.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 A hat that looks really cheap and probably cost them next to nothing. I'm wearing my cheap cowboy hat that I got in a gas station in Salt Lake City for 2.99, just to get in the spirit
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Says there was only 38,000 at the game today. I knew it didn't look like a sellout. Still a great crowd though
BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I don't understand why fans don't realize that TV numbers are far more important on today's economics than attendance
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I don't understand why fans don't realize that TV numbers are far more important on today's economics than attendance Pretty s***** for a first place team to play in an empty stadium though. But I agree, with rising prices and stuff, tv is the way to go. For a family of 4 to go to a jays game, it's easily like $200. (for crappy seats)
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Fans will be there when school is over. Its an absolute nightmare getting to the ballpark sometimes. After work and you get the kids out of school you really don't want to do anything but watch TV. TV numbers are great, and the attendance numbers will take off soon as once traveling becomes more practical. Agreed. If jays are still in first place by the time school is out. I'm hoping/expecting at least 22K+ a game on week days and 40+ on weekends
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I don't understand why fans don't realize that TV numbers are far more important on today's economics than attendance Because the Beest told them they'll spend when attendance goes up which was just a dumb attempt to get them to go to the games.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 For a family to go to a game, it can be a nightmare if you don't already live in the city.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I wonder how many TV watcher does it take to equal one ball park goer.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 For a family to go to a game, it can be a nightmare if you don't already live in the city. It's also a pain in the ass for the tampa fans to get to a game, not sure if it's really reasonablly possible if you dont own a vehicle yet it's somehow deemed okay to bash their fans
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 2, 2014 Author Posted June 2, 2014 I wonder how many TV watcher does it take to equal one ball park goer. That's a good question It is SO hard to tell how much money Rogers really makes off the TV portion of the business.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 That's a good question It is SO hard to tell how much money Rogers really makes off the TV portion of the business. I'm guessing quite a lot.

It really comes down to a combination of gate sales and TV viewership. Wonder how much viewership the Rays actually get?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 That's true. It really comes down to a combination of gate sales and TV viewership. Wonder how much viewership the Rays actually get? Well viewership is kind of irrelevant if they don't have their own network which they prob don't.. so its about what their tv deal pays them.. I would wager its prob not a lot.. I would imagine viewers in that section of FL aren't really coveted by advertisers where big bucks would be paid..
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 That's a good question It is SO hard to tell how much money Rogers really makes off the TV portion of the business. Yeah when they own the network you can never know..
