When do we start worrying about attendance?

I think attendance is based on success only. Toronto is not a great sports town.

Yep, it was pretty much the worst possible off-season for both the casual and serious fan. If somehow on a miracle this team can make a run at the division, I think we'll see the numbers go way up. When the Jays had the big winning streak last year to get back into it if I recall, they were drawing in the 40,000's for the last few wins of that win streak. Its a fickle town. If the team starts winning and generates excitement, the attendance will spike big time.

 

A 6 or 7 game win streak to get into first place and then stay there would get the buzz back.

 

I'm glad the Jays didn't make any trades this off season. The no decent free agent signings was surprising though.

Their game with the Oakland A's on Sunday afternoon drew an average of 630,000 viewers to Sportsnet, the biggest audience since the opening week of the season. That's 110,000 more than what the team averaged last year during a season that started with big audiences and finished with mostly friends and relatives watching.

Equally telling was the almost 500,000 who watched the first two games of the A's series on Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 360. Those channels tend to draw smaller audiences, mainly because they have fewer subscribers than the main channel.

An example of how far the Jays could go came Monday when they attracted an average audience of 836,000 for their game with Tampa Bay. That was the biggest ratings number since the home opener and a serious eye-opener considering that this it's still May. A pennant race would easily produce audiences of more than a million.

Pretty s***** for a first place team to play in an empty stadium though. But I agree, with rising prices and stuff, tv is the way to go. For a family of 4 to go to a jays game, it's easily like $200. (for crappy seats)

Fans will be there when school is over. Its an absolute nightmare getting to the ballpark sometimes. After work and you get the kids out of school you really don't want to do anything but watch TV. TV numbers are great, and the attendance numbers will take off soon as once traveling becomes more practical.

 

Agreed. If jays are still in first place by the time school is out. I'm hoping/expecting at least 22K+ a game on week days and 40+ on weekends

Tampa had 38,000 fans too, but that was the total for all of last week.

That's true. It really comes down to a combination of gate sales and TV viewership. Wonder how much viewership the Rays actually get?

Well viewership is kind of irrelevant if they don't have their own network which they prob don't.. so its about what their tv deal pays them.. I would wager its prob not a lot.. I would imagine viewers in that section of FL aren't really coveted by advertisers where big bucks would be paid..
