eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I thought I'd be much happier about this since I was driving the Santos-hatewagon since Day 1 but I'm not. Can't stay healthy, complete trash in high leverage situations but still wish he was given a longer look over the last month in lower leverage situations (there have been enough of them). Guy was just nailed to the bench over the last two weeks. He wasn't really given a true opportunity to redeem himself.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Case in point of why nerds like JFaS should just stick to blogging.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Regardless of whether it's the intention of his demotion, I'm hoping Santos gets claimed. A bit of extra money will do more for this team this year than Santos pitching in the minors will and his option for next year was going to be declined anyways. I'd also much rather his 40 man roster spot got to someone like Venable than to Aaron Sanchez.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I seriously have to stop making threads like this one LOL! Ya..read the first few pages. Ouch. Seriously though I liked the Santos deal when AA did it...long term control of a young asset with some track record...nasty stuff and lots of upside. Its been a bust for the most part but I don't get the release for nothing. Hard to believe this guy was an off season piece in vetoed Kinsler deal. Reminds me of playing Boni last year in important leveraged roles through large parts of season only to then just let him go for nada out of the blue.
jb22 Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 So then after 19 innings we're comfortable saying he's worse that Rob Rasmussen? That seems dubious. I'm not even saying Santos is a valuable asset on the whole. He's a pitcher. A relief pitcher. A relief pitcher with recent arm trouble. Staying healthy is a skill and he's probably not great at it. He's as volatile as it comes. If this somehow clears a bit of salary for a future move, ok. But if it's simply a case of them thinking Rasmussen will help them win more games well then ew. Well you're pretty much doing the same thing, he pitched 25 innings last year, is that enough to comfortably say he's good? 3 years of injuries + 24 bad innings + 25 good innings = ?
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 In fact, there's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to indicate that this stems from any pro scouts, at all ... let alone a single pro scout ... and let alone a pro scout looking at ERA, and then clouding his own judgment with that information. You may as well have opined that aliens caused this. It's slightly more believable. Santos was on the major league squad. Everyone in the org that matters at the MLB level could see him throw. In games. In side work. Whenever. Managers, general managers, coaches ... everyone. The reality is, the guy's always injured, and when he's not, he has neither the command nor the control to pitch in the major leagues right now. Apparently, he wasn't progressing in his side work, and not being able to get him regular work in the majors as they're fighting for a playoff spot, they logically deduced that the only hope of getting anything out of him was to hope he clears waivers, can work on things in the minors and then get added back to the major league roster if/when he's ready. And if they lose him to another team on waivers ... what did they lose? A guy who they won't retain beyond this year and who was unlikely to provide value the rest of the year, and definitely not in the short-term. In other words, they lost very little, if anything. yes, it truly is this simple.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Santos is coming back!!!! The Toronto Blue Jays have selected the contract of pitcher Sergio Santos from triple-A Buffalo and will make a corresponding roster move prior Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Santos has posted a 1-0 record with two saves and a 0.00 ERA in 11 appearances with the Bisons. In 10 2/3 innings with Buffalo, right-hander allowed three hits and six walks while recording 16 strikeouts.

I'm glad that Santos was kept in the organization and no team claimed him. His arm is electric - hopefully he has a strong finish up in the bigs!
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Omg, AA is going to pickup his option.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Oh s***. Why? Oh, AA must be looking at that ERA. Unless someone is hurt they couldn't have waited until Sept 1 to bring him back? I'm going to assume someone in the pen might have tweaked something and/or they feel they need an extra arm. Maybe AA is panicking over CJ blowing a save
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Omg, AA is going to pickup his option. I have that fear. He'll base it off his outings in AAA, claim the market is short for "decent" or "solid" relievers, a handful of innings he pitches when he's back, or what he "could" put up if not injured and sucking out loud. Or worse anoint him closer since CJ will likely leave town the day the season ends.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Hopefully this means Norris will not be called up. Let him go home and rest for next season.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Maybe AA is hoping he can call him up, maybe get a clean inning, put him on waivers, have another team claim him and get out of the money owed including the buyout a la Rogers.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Hopefully this means Norris will not be called up. Let him go home and rest for next season. I don't see a problem with Norris being a sept callup in the pen.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 I don't see a problem with Norris being a sept callup in the pen. Don't see a need to start his service clock. If they want get him more innings there's always the Arizona fall league
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 I don't see a problem with Norris being a sept callup in the pen. Buffalo only 1 game out of a wildcard and are playing the Red Sox affiliate right now, wwho is the team they're chasing. Stomped them 15-2 last night. They might actually make the playoffs and having Norris there for that would be nice.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Norris isn't on the 40-man, so his call-up might require someone to be DFA'd. Which actually brings up a roster question. Santos was DFA'd and cleared waivers, so was he not removed from the 40-man? Right now, ESPN has both Santos and Drabek on the 25-man roster - they updated for Santos's promotion, but not Drabek's demotion. So their 25-man roster, on ESPN is actually 26 (when ESPN moves Drabek to the minors that will be cleared up, but he will still be on the 40-man). Regardless, there are also 3 guys on the 15-day DL - Lawrie, DJohnson and Gillespie. That's 29 now (Izturis on the 60-day doesn't count toward the 40 man). And then they list 13 more in the minors as part of the 40-man (It'll be 14 when Drabek is properly shifted). 25+3+14 = 42 on the 40-man. One of those guys in the 14, Wagner, will probably be 60-day'ed, if he hasn't been already, and ESPN just hasn't updated it. But they still need to make room on the 40-man for Santos, it would appear (both because they seem to be over 40, and because Santos wasn't on the 40, which makes sense). Who gets the boot? Hynes, Hague, Valdes? The BJ's mlb site has Santos listed on the 40 and 25 man rosters and the roster being full at 40. Maybe ESPN is a bit behind? They'll have to remove someone if they bring Morrow off the 60 day DL. I can see Johnson, Hynes, Hague, Mastroianni as options to be DFA or maybe Johnson or Lawrie transferred to the 60. AA had 3 open spots only to fill them with Hynes, Hague and now Santos. Depends on what AA wants to do. If any of those guys aren't in the plans for next year, and lets face it Hynes, Hague, Mastro don't seem to be since they're depth moves a spot could open. I'm not sure if they could put Wagner on the 60 since they'd have to recall him and place him on the DL which would also cost them more money since it would count towards his MLB service time and they could use the excuse he was hurt in the minors so it doesn't count. I could be wrong. I'd rather them leave Norris in the minors let him rest up and try winning a spot next year. The Jays are all but out of the race and he's not going to make or break the team. If they want to add him to the roster they can do so in the off season or wait until spring if he wins a spot.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 I don't see a problem with Norris being a sept callup in the pen. As others have already mentioned, he isn't even on the 40-man roster and doesn't need to be added for another year. I don't see the need to clog the 40-man roster even more with Norris who's already near his innings limit. Pompey might be another story since he will need to be added in the off season anyway. We'll see what happens.

Yeah I'm not eager to rush him at all, but I am intrigued to see him pitch. It's more for my entertainment than anything else.
