G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 It's ridiculous and I'm so glad we kept him. I think a lot of ppl here didn't watch much the last 6 weeks of 2013, but he was back, was bad ass and pretty much unhittable at the end of the season, and he still is now. I hope his health holds up, is all When Janssen is back, as much as I like him too, Santos stays the closer

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 He has the stuff to put up a 2-3 WAR season from the pen. He just has to stay healthy. His slider is absolutely ridiculous. Sure is. The craziest thing is when they know the slider is coming and they still get owned. They're down 0-2, 1-2 and they know exactly what's coming. But they can't lay off of it because it must look like it's going to be in the strike zone, but then the bottom falls out of it and they flail at it, missing the ball by a foot.
Flamingweazel Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I get a dwayne Ward vibe from Santos, cannot remember if Ward was quite as filthy, but he was pretty dominant from the pen as well, dude needs to stay healthy.
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Yeah it's awesome/he's awesome, but there seems to be an undeniable connection with Santos and shaky moments. I definitely prefer Santos to Casey, but until he's commanding his fastball consistently, I'm not ready to say he's a 2-3 WAR guy. Also I will admit I avoided most if not all of his 2013 appearances.

This is why he has that reputation among some Jays fans. We remember some of those shaky performances where he'd barely pull off the save. But Aug/Sep last year he was healthy and was absolutely lights out. I was still watching all the games, so he rebuilt my confidence in him.
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Have you seen the swing and misses? Hes making good hitters look bad. His fastball comand has been much improved. I just glanced over his stats from late last year, jesus christ.

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 But really, this bullpen may be elite.
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Filthiest pitch in baseball right now IMO. I raise you a Cole Hamels change up.
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I have to say, I was fully on board with moving both, but watching Santos so far this year has me thinking that $6 million 2015 option isn't so bad. Picking it up would have the added bonus of likely preventing the team from extending Janssen at 3/21 or something. Obviously it's too early to say either way, but he's just really fun to have in the back of the pen. I hadn't ever considered this, but it really is inevitable isn't it?
mitchf Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I really, really hope not. I'd be resting a lot easier if he had been traded in the offseason. I'm sure our FO thinks $1 mill per 5ish saves is a big time bargain.

While I wouldn't be opposed to dealing both if the Jays are out of it come the trade deadline, Santos is just so raunchy back there. I'd love to keep him around on that option, assuming he keeps dealing. The Janssen extension probability haunts me, FWIW.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Jays bullpen is pretty unreal. Cecil in the 6th, Delbar is the 7th, jannsen in the 8th(when back) and Santos in the ninth. Throw a loup in there as well and the game becomes a 5 inning for the other team.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 I raise you a Cole Hamels change up. Don't. JFAS has already proven that Santos' slider is the best out pitch in baseball.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Uh-huh! it's probably easier for Santos to throw this year knowing there is a lot better chance that strike 3 wont be a pass ball?

xposbrad Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 At least the Jays will have some good trade chips come the deadline. Who was it that AA was going to trade Santos for in the offseason?

Who was it that AA was going to trade Santos for in the offseason? Brett Anderson. That fell through because Anderson failed a physical. Then Ian Kinsler. That fell through because Kinsler blocked the trade. We don't know for sure who else might have been included in these trades but the names Romero and Arencibia had been thrown around.

I hope his health holds up, is all When Janssen is back, as much as I like him too, Santos stays the closer I'd be trading Santos right now when people are liking his stuff and he appears to be healthy. Reality is he was good in a setup role last year, he does have injury risk, and there is no guarantee he'll adapt well to closing out close games. It would not surprise me if Janssen came back and was more effective then Santos. But it almost doesn't matter who is better, if the trade market dictates we can get good value for Santos we should move him. Our bullpen as it sits now is overkill on this team. Cecil, Janssen, Santos, Delebar, and maybe even Wagner could all close games. We cannot have this excess of relievers ( quality and quantity ) and have this bare thread depth in the OF and on the bench. If Santos short term success can be parlayed into a useful offensive player, they should do it. Add one decent bat now for a reliever and we might have a contending team that only needs to trade for one more player at the deadline ( to cover for whomever gets injured ) to make a serious run.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 When Janssen is back, as much as I like him too, Santos stays the closer Why? Janssen has been money in that role. Santos could play a bigger role being the setup guy. No reason to shake things up, Santos will be the full time closer next season after Janssen walks.

Santos is healthy. Every game he pitches is raising his value. We have a stacked pen, let him pitch. After Janssen walks Santos is going to be our closer next year anyways.

LunchBox Verified Member Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Hamels' change and Santos' slider both play up because of the contrast created by the other pitche(s) in their respective repertoires. Kenley Jansen throws only one pitch and it's comparably effective; he is the new Rivera, most dominant pitch in baseball hands down.
