G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Clearly he can't be on the team as is He has negative trade "value" thanks to his contract so he's probably unmovable unless packaged with a good player that we won't want to trade. He has over 5 years of MLB service so can't be optioned without his consent Putting him in the bullpen is not a good option because it would mean possibly letting a better pitcher without options go So. He needs to go on the DL if he's actually hurt or he needs to accept a minor league assignment. As Wilner and the other guy said on the air today multiple times he should accept one or the other. Without actually saying it, they intimated that if he refused, that he's a selfish POS. Thoughts?
ColdPint Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 In what is supposed to be a "contending" year, regardless of how realistic that is, you absolutely make each and every roster decision with wins and losses in mind. If you're making a decision to appease Happ at the detriment of the team it will send a clear message that winning is not priority #1. Happ's sense of entitlement to a rotation spot is nothing short of ridiculous.

It's not as simple has you make it out to be if Happ does not consent to being sent down you pretty much have to put him on the 25 man. If he is feeling healthy he may not agree to a DL stint either. Like BTS said in another thread. He has the Jays by the Nuts. Only thing you can do is DFA him and hope someone is desperate for arms and takes a shot at him. ONLY OPTION right now.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 AA is going to be desperate to trade one of these guys or risk losing one for nothing. A phantom injury is in order here.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 The whole situation could get ugly fast if it's not dealt with. Too bad he's getting paid $5.2 million this year.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 The right thing to do is to release him. Like, s***... I would choose Drabek for the rotation over Happ at this point.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Agreed Putting him in the rotation as is is just not an option at all His salary is really not that bad all things considered. Regardless of his spring, I have to think there would be teams that would take most if not all of the salary. There's lots of pitching injuries right now it seems.

You take your best right out of the gate and give Happ the chance to work out his issues in Buffalo. If he refuses you release him and eat the salary. At what point is negative WAR worth $5 million in a year of supposed contention? It's a culture problem that this is even a decision the Jays are struggling with, assuming they are.

You'd think a creative trade could be made to free up some roster space for others, and possibly help our lack of depth at 2B/OF/Bench. Same situation that existed in June 2013, and AA hasn't done a damn thing to change it. We can kick in on Happ's salary if it makes a trade work, not sure how deep Seattle's pitching is but if they have any interest in improving their pitching depth we need a 2B.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 A phantom injury is definitely in order. He's already lost L. Perez, which wasn't a big deal, and he'll probably lose Jeffress, but keeping Happ likely costs them Redmond/Rogers, which actually does matter. I'm thinking Janssen starts the season on the DL, which gives him a bit of wiggle room for now.

Not sure why they insist on trying to keep everyone, I'm not sure if the Lind demotion a few years ago was identical in nature ( can;t remember ) but Lind went to AAA and worked on his swing. Somebody needs to ask AA what "All In" was supposed to mean. Funny thing is as bad as Happ has been ( and its since the beaning he's had the biggest problems ), with all the injuries in baseball someone will need him this season. Would a team like Oakland want him on their team as depth now ? Pay part of his salary and trade him there if so. Just do something, the Jays waiver wire roulette is pretty stupid.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Why in the ever living f*** did AA feel the need to give a fringy 5th starter a guaranteed multi-year contract extension? He was a big part of what they were trying to do here
Rotator Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 So glad this game wasn't televised today, couldn't stand watching another happ s*** show, was bad enough listening to it at times today. Hate happ, don't care what they do with him, eat the money and dfa this shitberg. I don't want to see this guy pitch for the Jays ever again.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Janssen DL Hutch and Redmond rotation Santos Delabar Cecil Loup Rogers Happ McGowan Jeffress That makes things doable with an 8-man pen. Yup, although I think McGowan gets the rotation spot with Redmond going to the pen. This might be the better course of action anyways as we can try to extract as many starts from McGowan in the early going until his arm falls off at which point Redmond then slides into the rotation.

TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 How sick is it that 10% of this fing club's payroll is tied up in Happ and Romero. For all the talk about "The policy" of not giving out contracts longer than 5 years, i'd rather shoot for the fences by going all in and signing premium free agents to longer deals than to be harpooned by the likes of Romero and Happ.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 It sort of reminds me when the Jays had millions in BJ Ryan (done like dinner) and Thomas (cut). What was that for, $10M combined? With Romero and Happ, and I'll throw in Izturis, it's like ~ $15M. But at least they are all still in the org.

No one could have predicted he'd get the yips. Anyhow, shooting for the fences sometimes works, but it also sometimes produces Ryan Howards.

And I understand that the failure of these guys on relatively short contracts, and as you mentioned guys like Howard, argues, in fact, for the policy. That said, my point is, if you ARE going to fail with guys like Happ, and to a lesser extent, Romero (as you said, was not a bad signing at the time) and have to eat money regardless, i'd rather forego the policy altogether and least have a chance to have a superstar on your team for the next 7 years.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Romero, Happ, Izturis and Thole combine for $17.15 million this year. That's completely dead weight. Thole isn't dead weight, what's he making, $800K? He's depth at a hard spot to find depth and he catches Dickey. He'll maybe end up catching Ohka in the minors staying sharp for Dickey in the show. That's not nearly as useless as Romero and Happ. Or expensive. Romero and Happ cost the Jays a premium free agent and maybe 2-4 WAR.

I want Izzy gone too, but if we're being honest and he was on another team last year, he'd probably be one of the guys all of us would be targeting to take over 2nd base...
