Smedley Butler Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I think it's our year to get lucky with injuries. I almost fell off of AA's jock last week but I'm right back on riding away like a whore. This is our year, time to get excited. McGowan is getting me hard, I'll take him over JJ any day. I'm popping wood over hutch daily. Dickey's makin my dicky move. The offence is solid! Baseball in just over a week! I'm pumped, sick of the pessimism. Standing pat is going to be the story of the year. Cool. Not really a good reason to go overboard with the delusional homerism, though. You're just setting yourself up for yet more disappointment. Expect the worst, and be pleasantly surprised if we're within 5 games of the second WC spot come September.

Every year I feel we got a shot, and in baseball every team for the most part does. I like our chances this year as much as last, and last year I was confident the drought would end. March 31st. Can't f***in wait!!!

Awesome I'm hoping they generate some excitement the first few weeks Seems like fan interest has fallen off significantly this off season. Only winning can fix that this year.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Nothing wrong with some optimism even if it's highly unlikely to occur. This forum is a breeding ground for depression sometimes. Of course, but I prefer the cautiously optimistic approach. I personally (as I imagine we all do, individually) get so disappointed when high expectations are not met. Meeting them halfway is much more palatable if they fail. Anything above that would be awesome, obviously.

At the end of the day it's just a game and I prefer to enjoy it for what it is. Winning would be nice but it's never the end of the world.

I'm just saying that curbing expectations this season is probably for the best lol. Not trying to be negative. Anything can happen, but the roster is not a lot different than last season.

A bit of luck would be welcome, but not expected.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Approaching the team with no expectations but still loving them is probably going to leave me not wanting to punch a hole in a god damn wall.

leaffie Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 "Padres: Compared to last spring, when Johnson was with Toronto, the Padres' pitcher is feeling positively great. "I was feeling beat up before spring training (last year)," Johnson, who battled arm injuries throughout the 2013 season and suffered through the worst of his nine Major League seasons." Strange, I just read this today. It was written two days ago. I remember wondering when I read it, why he was so beat up before the season even started with the Jays. Well I was against giving him the QO, and I am glad that AA didn't give it to him. Too many injuries.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Honestly, this team has likable players. I know people hate Lawrie but I personally like him quite a bit. Eddie and Hutch have been favorites of mine for a while, and I'm really f***ing rooting for Morrow as my favorite player. Then there's Reyes obviously, Bautista when he's not being a bitch, Lind's beard, D-Mac, etc. There are plenty of likable players for me, which makes watching an 81 win team bearable. That and I will never ever stop watching the Blue Jays lol. I remember when I didn't post for a few weeks in the summer and everyone thought I was a bandwagoner. Lmao
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Lind's beard Over / under on the number of games before a ball gets lost in that thing? I wonder how that would be ruled anyway...

Love those guys too.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Lind's beard This deserves it's own thread.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Colby. Casey. Dickey. Love those guys too. Funny thing is, this team has a ton of talent. As bad as we are in certain aspects, it's not that far fetched that this team could contend. Yay for optimism.
fireballW Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Edwin, Reyes and Kawasaki are our only likeable position players to me. MAYBE Lind just because of the way he seems pretty honest in interviews. Colby and Lawrie can be entertaining at times, but likeable... meh. Arencibia leaving will go a long way towards me enjoying watching games this year though.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Agreed on Lind. I have never enjoyed an interview so much.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Agreed on Lind. I have never enjoyed an interview so much. No one can possibly compete with Kawasaki on interviews. I agree that I like Lind's honesty though.

Standing pat is going to be the story of the year. That's a whole lot of dick references. But yeah, I'm starting to have a good feeling about this team. Like the SP might actually work out. I have never seen a Jays team which such pitching depth...we have 8 starters. That's crazy. No aces, but a few of those guys could do things. Granted a lot of it is unproven, but there's always the chance that Rogers and Redmond can give us 12+ wins. Hutch, maybe 15+ if things really work out for him.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 If he can't bounce back from this quickly I think hes done. This is last year he will get paid for what he use to do. Padres took what many thought was a good gamble. But they have paid him 8M just to look pretty. I guess he kind of deflates the stereotype that big guys stay healthier. Hes about as big as it gets 6'7 255 and I think they're being flattering with his weight. I will miss watching him dominate. Last year was so depressing because I wanted him for so long. So much for his 200M contract or whatever his agent was claiming he'd command...
Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 So much for his 200M contract or whatever his agent was claiming he'd command... Yeah, sometimes agents need to STFU. Promoting is one thing, but JJ has a huge hill to climb.
Caper Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Lol at all the Jays fans going nuts after the Jays wouldn't give him a qualifying offer.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 It was about the premise. If it was because of medical reports, then fine. If it was about performance, then it was egregious. I think given his medical history, this past season and years prior, coupled with very poor performance, all went into the decision not to QO him. To suggest it was one or the other seems kind of ridiculous don't you think?

The talent evaluation beyond basic stats seems to be really lacking with this regime.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 If JJ makes fewer than 7 starts in 2013, the Padres get a $4M option for 2015.

The talent evaluation beyond basic stats seems to be really lacking with this regime. There is no way the FO looked at a 6.2 ERA and that was the only reason they let him walk It was a combination of accumulated injuries, estimatikn of high risk of same in 2014, and generally poor performance without a really good season since 2010, all vs the $ cost (14.3M in this case)
