Anyone think its a better deal trading for Weeks than picking up Drew? Weeks should just be a salary dump and Drew costs you a draft pick.

I don't mind Drew because he is a sound defensive SS if Reyes goes down, but Weeks certainly offers a higher upside with the stick

Oh grow the f*** up. This signing doesn't have a f***ing thing to do with AA's ineptitude or adequacy as a GM. The Braves got him for the exact same money that the Jays offered.

Exactly. AA should know that we will have to offer more to get FAs to come here. He seems to think he can lowball and players will go along with it. My point stands that AA has not signed ANY significant free agents in his 4 years here. There were many options to improve the rotation this offseason and last. AA is a f***ing joke.

Id rather go with Goins than Weeks, just for the D (rickie weeks im assuming?)

He doesn't like Toronto. No one enjoys playing here. We'd have to give him 20 million dollars a year to even consider coming here..as per AA

Toronto is a first class city compared to some s*** holes in the U.S. lol. I find the Toronto or playing in Canada excuse ridiculous. Baltimore and Atlanta are s*** holes - wouldn't want to be out on the town in those cities late at night.

If Ervin were still available and you could do something like flip Weeks for Romero and sign Santana that would be cool but since AA's been left holding his dick on Santana, I'd rather just spend the Ervin money on Drew. Maybe you could give Reyes the DH starts against lefties so that Drew can get some shortstop starts (until one or the other gets injured).

Our Mayor is ROB FORD - first class? No.

While you're absolutely right, I think the bigger problem is the perception of the city for American guys much more so than any sort of tangible quality metric. I've absolutely hated Atlanta too when I've visited.

Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Ervin Santana didn't want to pitch in the American League.

"We're in the American League," Anthopoulos said during an appearance on Sportsnet 590 radio in Toronto. "Guys that don't want to be in the American League, there's nothing we can do." A.A. insisted that the right-hander's decision "was not money, was not years." We find this line of reasoning rather difficult to accept, as Santana has never actually pitched in the N.L., having spent the entirety of his nine-year career between the Angels and Royals. It seems that Anthopoulos is annoyed that Santana, choosing between equal offers, preferred the NL East instead of the AL East, an obvious choice for a hurler looking to rebuild his market value in 2014. We'd suggest to Anthopoulos that if he'd been more aggressive in February -- before Atlanta's rotation became ravaged by injury -- Santana would be in Toronto's Opening Day rotation.

AA is usually pretty careful what he says in the media. Saying this specifically (along with Gibby's comments) makes me think that maybe the reports about Santana coming here if no one beat the price within 24 hours or whatever may have been correct, and he or his agent changed their minds. The Jays may have had another trade lined up with that in mind.

I wouldn't say better than Drew, but probably better than Goins.

Nobody is angry that he missed out on Santana. They're angry that he's done nothing all offseason, and Santana represented the last feasible target for upgrading the team.

Not looking to pick a fight here, just dialogue. Generalizations are what really causes misinterpretations. I responded to a post which seemed to insinuate that the Jays did not get Santana because of money so I thought that was inaccurate. Are you now implying that nobody here is angry that Anthopoulos was not successful in getting Santana on board? If so, I disagree because it certainly comes across that way to me especially with a 1-year contract.

With respect to Anthopoulos not doing anything all offseason, I disagree with this statement as well even though I do not have proof he did otherwise. I am sure he tried but was unsuccessful at getting what he felt was needed while being fiscally responsible - The key here is "not trying to get what you need at any price".

Now if you had said the fans are disappointed that the teams' holes were not filled I would agree however not everything is as black or as white as it is being made out to be. There are usually situations surrounding the process which are not known to outsiders which can changes a person's perspective on what went down. I guess it may have been more accurate to say maybe Anthopoulos just does not have what it takes to bring in talent in the manner but that's speculation as well. To suggest the root cause for not improving the team over the off-season was money is also speculation. It is irresponsible to suggest that since Rogers has the money they should be spending it like it comes from a bottomless pit.

Anthopoulos has certainly dug a hole for himself and the organization with the prior off-season additions so compounding it with rash moves just to satisfy the fans will be a bigger problem in my opinion. It's frustrating to say the least however sooner or later he will be held responsible for his performance and hopefully the right decision will be made at that time.

I'd rather trade for Franklin, Wong or Espinosa

If you're going to hire a veteran free agent to fill 2B short term that's fine. If you're going to trade assets to get someone you want someone younger with upside. They'll (hopefully) be here for many years to come.

lol i'm still in shock that our biggest move this offseason was acquiring navarro zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Switching pizza vendors was probably bigger

And that was a sad move in itself. Pizza pizza may suck outside of the Rogers Center, but man it's so cheesey and delicious at a game. Pizza Nova just doesn't cut it for me. Now if we can package Nova and a Haagen Dazs vendor for Pizzaoili, that would be a great trade.

I'm looking forward to the switch from Pizza Pizza to Pizza Nova.

AA: "We liked the deal Pizza Nova had to offer and their pizza slices are top notch. We might have had to overpay a bit to switch, though in the end we thought of the fan base and we couldn't pass up on the real Italian pepperoni! Bringing Pizza Nova aboard will help get this team closer to a championship."

Don't worry guys will wait until someone signs him long term and then we will deal a couple top prospects for him.

Top prospects? Like who? I thought you just said Stroman is a bust.

f*** that. Alex & Beeston's job at this point is not to build a contending team, its to sell tickets. And young, unknown players to a casual fan base just doesn't do it.

AA's only fault in this situation was waiting until the 11th hour. The preference to pitch in the NL and Santana's leverage ploy off BAL and TOR is as wimpy as they come. I get that it's a business, but what a low-blow. Hope this comes back to bite him next year when he looks for a multi-year offer.

Bottom line: We all got the 1 year deal we wanted from Santana, but it wasn't meant to be.

That being said, the general rage that is focused at AA is more of a backlash of a pretty pathetic offseason; where even minor tweaks or added depth is missing for a team that is supposedly in their 'window'. Here's to blowing it all up in 3 months!

Espinosa would be a terrific fit. He doesn't have a spot in Washington's lineup and has proven to be a player who could put up 2.5-3 WAR seasons. Plus he shouldn't cost that much in terms of talent. I'm still shocked he hasn't been a target.

Sad but true.

Now that Santana is officially gone what are we realistically looking at starting the year with?

#4 hutch, #5 Redmond, Rogers long man and Happ to DL?

I wish there wasn't so much truth to this
