Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 The Braves interest probably explains why he backed out of our deal. I'm a little disappointed, but didn't really want him to begin with.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 AA could lose his job this season
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 The Braves interest probably explains why he backed out of our deal. I'm a little disappointed, but didn't really want him to begin with. Still don't understand how any Jays fan couldn't want him on a one year contract. Clear upgrade over what we have. If we think we're getting 200 innings out of Hutch, Stroman or Happ then we're all on crack. Just a pathetic offseason. I love what Hutch has shown but he's not going to give us a full season. Instead we have 2 spots that are completely up in the air and a 3rd that is a big question mark in Morrow. Ugly. Can't imagine the players are happy about this either. There's been a number of articles with guys making it clear we needed another reliable starter.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 f*** Em! All the same the Jays shouldnt have waited until half way through spring training to hit the panic button on trying to find a starter! I have family and friends in 4 or 5 states and they are all laughing at the s*** show that this org has become....haha....
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 LOL Start of offseason: "Speaking of pitching, GM Alex Anthopoulos told media (including The Toronto Star) that the rotation is "the most glaring hole on this team and that’s the most glaring area we need to address." What exact kinds of starters will be acquired, however, is still up in the air. “Can it be done with five mid-rotation starters? Would we be better off with two front-of-the-rotation guys and three guys that are five-hole or four-hole guys? ... I think it’s as much about guys who give you a chance to win games," Anthopoulos said." Doesn't address it. The Blue Jays have a GM that doesn't even address self-admitted glaring holes on his pseudo-competitive roster. I am almost in awe of the let down offseason that Anthopoulos is letting happen. Good luck getting fans excited this year.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Smart move by Santana. I don't know why he would want to sign a 1 year deal in hitter friendly parks in the AL east. Would have loved him on a 1 year deal though.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Well I guess this is a testament to AA's inability to sign free agents. The dude has literally not signed ANY significant free agents. Only FAs he has signed in the last 4 years are Raj Davis at 5/2? and Melky at 16/2, which is a decent deal but he WAS coming back from a 50 game suspension. AA is a garbage GM.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Like, f***. Even the f***ing Rays and A's make some great value FA signings.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 The most embarrassing part of this whole fiasco is the stark differences between the Jays and Braves in this scenario. The Jays admit they need lots of help in terms of starting pitching at the end of the season and then do NOTHING over 5 months while FAs sign for less than expected. The Braves develop a need based on sudden injuries and do something within a couple days.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 S x3 (Sanchez, Stroman and Sierra) for Samardzija coming soon
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I think people were starting to like Santana because he was something, anything, a warm body that was not from our current stockpile of "lighting in a bottle" former prospect signings. I wouldnt have been thrilled with Santana and his questionable arm anyway. Glad to see him not come. But wow, had there been a more disappointing off season in years? Just watching Edwins and Baus usefull years go down the toilet.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 S x3 (Sanchez, Stroman and Sierra) for Samardzija coming soon Well at least it wasn't Baltimore. What are you going to do...the jays made a good offer and the player chose to play in the nl vs the al east. I highly doubt they are going to trade for Samardzija.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Santana fantasy owners rejoice!

He waited until that Medlen broke his arm
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Good Offer? He waited until that Medlen broke his arm The Jays weren't going to make a multi year offer on Santana. I don't blame them for that, but when it came down to a one year they offered as much as the qualifying offer and more than Baltimore. He didn't want to come to the AL east and I don't blame him. He got bailed out by the fact that medlen got injured. Do you think 14 mil for Santana is too cheap? What would you pay Santana 18 mil? 20 mil?

Just watching Edwins and Baus usefull years go down the toilet. I still like what I'm seeing out of hutch. He looks like a number 2 the way he's pitching right now. I'd still like to see him in AAA and limiting his innings until about june 1 though.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Another EPIC fail from our FO. Couldn't seal the deal. There goes a guaranteed 200 innings down the drain.

Just watching Edwins and Baus usefull years go down the toilet. There is literally zero downside to signing Ervin Santana to a short term contact. Why would you not have been thrilled to sign an innings eater to a one year deal?

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Serious injuries too.. Medlen's facing a 2nd Tommy John surgery, Beachy is hurt as well, Minor may not be ready for Opening Day. Let's just hope the Braves don't get burned with this deal, as they're already paying dead money to BJ Upton and Dan Uggla.
Brenner Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Its a 1 year deal how can they get burned? Santana should be pretty good for them and worth the contract.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Another EPIC fail from our FO. Couldn't seal the deal. There goes a guaranteed 200 innings down the drain. Doesn't Santana have a small tear in his UCL, dating back to 2009 or whatever?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Yeah those 5 innings against s***** ST competition and MLB regulars who DGAF were UBER impressive. When you watch a guy hit the glove and execute 10 pitches in a row with plus velocity it raises your eyebrows. Sure he's struck out 9 in 5 innings, but it's the manner in which he's executing his pitches and repeating his delivery. I understand that you are not allowed to make qualitative judgements on this site. AA s***, Hutch s***, blue jays s***....there I'm one of the crowd now.
