kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Anyone think they will turn guys like Morrow , McGowan , Hutch loose or will there be tight innings limits . Almost like they are going to have to severely limit innings early in the season on some guys to take over for other guys when they reach their limit unless they turn guys loose .

Well if McGowan makes it to 30 or 40 IP.. I don't know if anyone will know what the f*** if going on at that point.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 McGowan and Hutch pretty much have to be on inning limits. I could see Morrow not being on one though.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Morrow 100% is not on one. They'll let him throw 235 if he stays healthy and is effective. McGowan will be 32 on OD, he won't have one either. Plus I doubt he's very efficient so 190 is probably realistic for 32 starts. Hutch and Drabek will both be limited I bet. I suppose McGowan might not be on an official one, but I'd suspect they would move him to the pen in the second half and promote a kid. With that said, if McGowan is in the rotation half a year with the depth we'll have next year, then he's pitching well and staying healthy, and that's a really really good thing!
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Morrow likely won't be unless he is healthy and is visibly showing tiredness in the second half, then they may have to shorten it up a bit. As for McGowan, I doubt there would be. He will be 32, and AT&T his point if he gives this team a full season and never pitches again it's probably a win. Hutch probably is on one, no need to push him too hard just yet with all the back end options we have.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Morrow and McGowan will be turned loose. Hutch will be on a limit.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 How totally awesome would it be if Dustin McGowan started out the year as a starter, pitched the whole year, and pitched like we've all been dreaming about since the Blue Jays drafted him? He'd win the CY Young Award in the process, and take us to the World Series too. Even if he ended up blowing out his arm again next spring training atleast he'd still have his one magical season. He deserves it, we deserve it. I could see a movie being made about it.

Yeah you have to take what you can get from DM while you can.. whether he pitches 30 IP of 190 IP, there's a very good chance that on any given day it will be shut down for a year or two..
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That would be sweet, and we can pick up his option for next year. I don't need to win Powerball. I would settle for winning a lottery with better odds.. so like if Lawrie becomes a bat that matters, I will be happy about that.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Happ 5.33 IP x 30 GS = 160 IP Auto limit
kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Unless they somehow get a 200 inning guy I'm thinking we are going to see a lot of 8 man Bullpens thru the year . They only have one 200 inning guy in Dickey . Buehrle is now only a 170 to 180 inning guy . Happless is at best a 170 inning guy . Morrow WTFKs maybe with luck and health 180 .McGowan who I think right now is the #5 guy will be on a tight pitch limit and innings limit and the young guys Hutch and Stroman will certainly be innings limited . With all that who the f*** pitches in september ???

I look at him as a 6 inning guy now that he is older . Get him thru 6 having given up 3 runs and hope a strong BP can hold it there and win . Now someone who knows where to look can post #'s of his ERA after the 6th inning in the AL East with a strong BP if he gets you thru 6 with a chance to win be happy .

I don't know specifically about the AL East, but his career numbers appear to suggest he improves very marginally after the 6th. Last year was too small a sample size, but peripherals seem to agree with that assessment.

Buehrle has been about as consistent as it gets in terms of durability and innings. Until he proves otherwise, I don't see why he won't have another 200 inning season barring injury. Weren't you dumping on him last winter too saying Romero would be better? I don't get why people like to sell him so short sometimes.
awsomest Verified Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 mcGowan doesn't have a limit the blue jays are willing to run that man into the ground if hes is worth positive WAR
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Being a reliever might extend McGowan's career a couple of years (best case), but if they make him a starter, which is apparently something he wants to try, then he should not be on an innings limit. He will be 32 at the start of the season and has thrown 94 innings in the last five years. He is what he is and preserving his innings won't accomplish much (he may get hurt regardless).

The contributions of relievers are minimal compared with a starter (within the context of talent). If the guy can start games, then, allow him start games until his arm explode...

With a budget of 150 mil I hate it like I hate Happ at 6+ mil. difference is we can replace Happ at 500 K . We can't replace Buehrle Again Don't like his salary but don't think I thought Romero would be better . he is what he is . 4.2 to 4.5 era Ditto FIP 3rd or 4th starter on a decent team . Look at his track record and not much changes except his Cost which is 5 to 6 mil too much. I just look at him as a 6 inning guy now . Don't overuse him and the team would be further ahead IMO . Would he pitch better if used less , I think so . That is what I'm saying Vik.

That being said, with the pen we have we probably could shorten his starts, but with Dickey as the only other realistic 200 innings guy, we really can't afford to tax the pen like that. If another 200 innings guy is brought in then I think that changes things a bit, but at the same time I'm not messing with what works for Buehrle unless he proves he can't pitch those innings. He at least deserves a leash in that regard because he was one of our better starters last season and likely will be again this year. The real problem right now is we need one more guy we can count on in the rotation to allow Gibbons to utilize the pen more effectively.

I just don't think we will get that guy and unlike others I DON'T blame AA . He is doing what he can with the money he has . In a perfect world we could have got a Tanaka and let Buehrle be the #4 guy and go 6 innings and he would pile up the wins . Personally Morrow is the Key and I have said this all off season . If he steps up and stays healthy and gives us 180 innings then we can afford to have Happ in the 5th spot . I still put Dusty in the 4th spot and go with him till he starts to tire then move him to the BP and put the next best guy Hutch, Rogers ,Stroman , whoever into that spot . Gibby did a great job with the pen last year in spite of all the injuries but with decent starts BP pieces fail into place . As for an Innings limit on Dusty , I just watch for him tiring then do the switch . hell much as I have been down on this team because it has so many holes it isn't like we can't surprise . Morrow and McGowan who have the stuff step up and stay healthy the early rotation can be fine . It is when they start tiring who do we have with all the others on inning limits . We are going to need a guy in Sept.

Of course you CAN'T blame AA for not having much to work with... It's not like he had anything to do with last off-season's moves.

Whether that ends up being a guy like Ubaldo or someone much less coveted like Maholm, I think something will happen. The trade market will have to give at some point as well and AA could be involved on that as well. Once Tanaka is resolved, the market should pickup once again.

I just hate the 4 years but that is what it will take Maholm , Meh I rather go with what we have just stagger the innings so we have people to pitch in Sept. Oh I think AA will have tons of guys talking trade to him once all the injuries start piling up in ST . the one thing we have is depth in the bull pen/ long relief/5 th starter and when arms start falling off in St like they do every year AA has tradeable assets
kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 The one way the jays have of limiting innings at AAA would be to go with 6 starters . Baring injuries they have 7 in Hutch, Drabek , Stroman , McGuire , Jenkins , Nolin and Walden . which while not good for some would work for the 3 they want to limit innings so we have pitchers in Sept.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 If that's the rotation of arms in AAA, then either 1 of Walden/Jenkins would likely be the long man, and the other would just be used as a AA starter.
