He gives up a ton of our top prospects to make that deal happen.

We watch Johnson struggle with injury and consistency in about 10 starts for us.

AA lets him go for nothing. We think it's because he'll just use that money to bring another starter.

Nope. He obviously still has a couple weeks and their a couple guys out there, but his asset management has just been atrocious.

Who knows. Maybe JJ will suck again next year .... But if your not going to make a f***ing move to replace him, then f***ing bring him back for the year and see what happens

AA spent YEARS building that farm system, to blow his load on 2 trades that have not worked out, and now he is f***ing scared to keep building off this team. Right now we will watch our best players continue to get older and lose value while we chill in the basement of the east

A lot of other teams were interested in Josh Johnson. This could've happened on other clubs as well. At least Dickey and Buehrle have done something..

And BTW, Jimenez, Garza and Santana, among others, are still out there because Tanaka still hasn't signed yet, and the prices are way too high for the talent these pitchers have, which is not close to Tanaka.

You're going to get flamed, but your gripe is legit in this case IMO. JJ @ 1/14 is a better option than Santana/Jimenez at 4/60+ and a much better option than the status quo. At this point, not qualifying him looks like a mistake.

................And now you're a fortune teller!

How Alex would know the market price (Trade or FA)?

Surely Alex thought that he could get Samardzija in trade for Gose, JPA and Sierra.

Am i the only person who wouldn't even trade a bag of balls for samardzija. He was terrible last year in the NL and i don't see how two of our like 7 wild card pitchers couldn't produce a 4.3 era especially since some of them are on the weighted balls like mcgowan. One of stroman, mcGowan, hutch, drebek, romero, happ, rogers, or nolin will be better then smardzija next year and ill bet my shirt on it.

Using ErA as the basis of your argument is outdated. There's plenty of other metrics out there to use show Shark as being better than that. That's not to say he's worth what the Cubs are asking, but he would be a solid addition at the right cost

A free market with a huge demand for starting pitching valued him at much less then $14M. End of story. To argue anything otherwise is absurd.

Budget constraints and the need for some level of certainty. I would imagine that's why the Jays aren't in on Garza.

signing Johnson to a 1 year 9 mil deal would have been a gamble, but was probably the right thing to do. It would have been an incredibly ballzy move.....AA just isn't willing to take those risks this year..

There are a lot of better stats than ERA to evaluate a pitcher. You can find them here!

Im aware he had a war of 1 last year but his babip was bit over league average. The K/9 is also great but I dunno I'm not that impressed Cubs pitchers stats inflate like balloons when they leave that place (Dempster, Garza, Feldman). Color me skeptical but I would love to see read an article to change my mind.

I'm 99.9% sure JJ wouldn't have signed with us for 1 year at 9 mil. In fact, I'm not 100% sure he would have even accepted the QO.

Well, you can never be 100% of anything.

I'm 98.2% sure he wouldn't have accepted 1/9 and 96.7% sure he would have accepted his QO. His agent said as much.

Those numbers seems about exactly right. +/- 0.2%, 95 times out of 100

Because he thought he could get someone else. Or who knows, maybe there's no mo' moolah to spend even. I'm one of those that doesn't buy the idea that last off season's seeming change of direction was all part of their plan so it's possible that they can't go above 140M.

I support AA more then most people on this board. However, he totally dropped the ball when it came to Josh Johnson though. There was no way in hell with his agent that he was signing a pillow contract with us. 14 million an over pay? Yeah, probably. Market value for him was around 1 year 10 million. He apparently took slightly less money to play close to home and in a pitcher friendly park. He was such a good bounce back candidate (Xfip, BABIP, HR/FB ect) If he was AA's #1 target in that s***** f***ing trade how do you give up on him and not try and turn him into an asset. ( trade deadline trade or QO offer in 2014) QO him. Slight overpay with a really good chance he provides value and the chance to turn him into a draft pick or talent.

Agreed completely. If he declines, great! If he accepts, you pay like $3-4 million more than the market would likely have been willing, which is a lot better than having the cash either go unspent or go to pay Santana/Jimenez 14+ per year on a 4-year term.

14 millions for an injured player. Anderson was available for less.

We traded for him....until we saw the medicals. Must have been scary considering his history.

lol at believing his agent. They both new he had to go back to the NL to pitch so he can get a better contract and teams wouldn't sign him if they had to give up a first rounder so his agent bullshited to get the jays to not offer one.

I don't think AA wants to get anymore question marks. If he's been given one bullet, He's looking for a sure shot.

The question mark with JJ is the reason why he could represent great value to us.

Plus....on a 1 year contract who gives a s***.

That ignores the budget reality he faces. The fact that he announced he won't outbid for pitchers shows money is a serious concern for him at the moment, or rather Rogers.

Assuming we had the resources for one $10 million+ acquisition, I would rank the viable options according to the following priority:

2B > reliable 2+ win SP acquired efficiently > nothing > reliable 2+ win SP acquired inefficiently

I'm not sure what exactly AA has been waiting for, but now that his thumb as been up his ass for 3 months, it's hard to see him accomplish anything but inefficiently acquire a starter. Despite not being a terribly reliable option, there's a very good chance that qualifying JJ would have been AA's best offseason move.

I'm the ninja, the guy to trade s*** to get Rasmus and Yunel; trust me and wait for my next move
