Jimenez, Santana or 2nd round draft pick?

  1. 1. Jimenez, Santana or 2nd round draft pick?

    • Ervin Santana
    • Ubaldo Jimenez
    • Neither of them; keep 2nd draft pick and slot money.

Yeah. This would be s***.

I don't want both either. Plugging one hole by overpaying one of these guys is fine. But not both. Another spot could be filled from within (Stroman) or a mid season trade (Cliff Lee) if needed. And Morrow might have a healthy season for once (not holding breath but...)

I find it ominous we haven't heard a lick about Morrow's health this off season. He might have a healthy season, and just as likely, he might call it quits in ST.

AA's pursuit of SP may be the best indicator that Morrow cannot be relied on

The reports on Morrow is that he's 100% healthy with no lingering concerns.

I hate both of them. I can't find a single reason that I don't think is f***ing stupid to justify why you can afford Jimenez/Santana but can't afford Garza, other than "he just will not come here".

And pissed off that people are saying he's injury prone

"Yeah sounds like 7/140 he wants and might get. That's hard to swallow for a guy who's never pitched in the majors against guys like Chris Davis and Robinson Cano. "

Exactly. That Darvish signing is really biting the Rangers in the ass.

I'd rather have Ubaldo...high risk//high reward. But at least Ubaldo has a history of a very low HR/9. That's what the Jays need. RC is a very good hitters park, especially for LH hitters and Ubaldo did great against them. Ervin Santana was the benefactor of a spectacular Royals Defense. His K/9 isn't that great and he's somewhat HR prone.

Sure sign both of them...the Jays will lead the league in mediocre pitching depth and have about $20M tied up in guys pitching in Buffalo. I'm all for it if Rogers has no qualms with a $200M payroll now and into the future.

If we signed both, our rotation would be

Dickey

Ubaldo

Buehrle

Morrow

Santana

Still not a great rotation and we'd be spending 75+ million on starting pitching.

Oh f***. Adam Greenwood in the house.

I believe this team only needs 1 SP who can fill the #2 spot. I'd be fine going into the season with:

Dickey

?(Tanaka,Garza,Jimenez)

Buerhle

Morrow

Happ/Rogers/Redmond/etc

Tanaka and Garza are the only FA SP's that I think could actually slot into the #2 role so ideally I would prefer AA to sign one of those 2 but he could go the cheaper route and sign Jimenez to be the #3 and move Buerhle to #2. Santana would be a disaster in the AL east and pitching in RC, Jimenez I think although he also has is risks is a safer bet for the jays and a better fit than Santana

$15M on average for that rotation and they gave up two good prospects to try to get Dickey on a good deal...disgraceful. Add in guys like Romero and Happ who are paid to be SP but would be AAA depth/failed pitchers and it's even worse. Dickey and Morrow would have to return to their career best seasons with the other 3 being consistent compared to recent performance (no Rogers Centre bandbox/AL East adjustments allowed) to make that rotation worth its cost.

Of course if that does happen, this would be a 90+ win team rather easily I would say.

Risk vs Reward, I feel like Ubaldo is the best guy out there. I could change my mind if he gets way more in FA than I anticipate, but I think he is the guy.

I'm fine with that...but I would like to see the number 5 filled with either hutch, drabek or McGowan...everyone has happ in at number 5....I hope he's the long man out of the pen.

Hutch and Drabek will likely start the season in AAA and on a pitch count so they can make sure they are 100% before coming back. I would say Hutch is in the Rotation sometime in June if everything goes well.

Agreed. Hutch is going to be a nice surprise this year.

You look at what he was doing before he went down he looked really good. I think he is going to be a solid 2-3 type pitcher for a contender IMO.

I'd have a hard time projecting him as a #2, but I think he's going to produce much better than a #5 and that's all that we'll count on him for.

I loved Hutch as a prospect and was glad to see him continue his success in the majors but I'm not comfortable assuming he will just pick up where he left off as it were. He's a nice guy to have for depth but I think it's best to keep expectations modest.

I'm starting to come around on Ubaldo. If we could get him for 4x$16M with a club option, I'd probably be okay with that. You break even on 2.2 WAR/season give or take, that's not a bad bet for our place on the win curve. If he gives you three 3 WAR years and one dud, you got your money's worth.

It's exactly the kind of move the Jays should be doing, moves that improve the team's chances of winning but whose long term impact is manageable. Hopefully, there's some actual payroll space in order to do such a thing.

He cheaped out at catcher to save $. I fully expect he does in fact have the budget for a starter. No way ownership would prevent him from signing one starter via free agency when everyone knows how much such a signing is needed.
