G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I've made up my mind after waffling on who I want AA to sign. Give Jimenez 4 years 55-60M (probably less than 1/2 of what Tanaka would cost and he probably doesn't want to come here) Trade bullpen piece plus a non top 3 prospect for a 2B Let it ride Mid season make a tweak depending on how Morrow/Hutch/Drabek/Stroman are doing. Keep Sanchez and Stroman if at all possible
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 He's also "asking for" 4 years. 4/$56M seems like a pretty attractive option to me at this point. We can probably get an option year too.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Dickey Jimenez Buerhle Morrow Stroman Has the makings of a fairly adequate rotation IMO, and we have a first division offense, easily.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 14M annually gives lots of room for surplus value. Sign him ASAP AA.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Yep. Just do it. But address 2B too. I have a sneaking suspicion that Brandon Phillips will be a Blue Jay.

Imagine how much more confident you would feel if you trusted that Morrow would give you 180 innings. But that's the whole problem - you can't count on him.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 14M annually gives lots of room for surplus value. Sign him ASAP AA. Agreed. You're paying him to be a 2 WAR guy, and he's gone for 3+ WAR in 3 of the last 4 years. At the very least we'll probably break even.

But that's the whole problem - you can't count on him. I expect nothing from Morrow, but SP2 upside is still there. I also think AA has eyes for Homer Bailey, who Jocketty said yesterday is unlikely to sign an extension. Bailey + Phillips' salary for Rasmus+ is a deal I've been floating for some time now.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I mean, would you all rather roll with Gose in CF, or Goins at 2B? Gose for me, easily.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 If Jimenez goes 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, and 1, he'd be worth $58.18MM over the next four years. Steamer projects 2.5 WAR for him in 2014. He's essentially asking for his market value here.

I'd give Ubaldo 4/58 all day, every day. Too bad the Jays are so bass ackwards that they probably like Santana more and will end up giving him something approaching an Anibal Sanchez contract if they don't land Tanaka.

What do we forfeit if we sign both? 2nd/3rd? I don't want Ervin, but I could see AA inking both (unfortunately).

The Rasmus for Phillips swap just changes our hole from 2b to CF. I guess its a question of who'd you rather be starting, Gose at CF or Goins at 2b? At this point I'd rather go with Goins/Izzy to be honest, I like Rasmus in CF better than Phillips at 2b. But adding Bailey and signing Jimenez would be huge though, probably need to add Happ to this trade to unload some money. We'd definitely need too add some OF depth too.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I think even AA is clever enough to at basic K, HR and GB rates and see that Ubaldo is clearly the superior option. I hope.

It's really more like Rasmus for Bailey, and Phillips is a zero value asset that we'd agree to take to facilitate the former.

Now. He may get greedier after Tanaka signs. Take advantage of the protected first round pick for once! That gives us a big advantage over teams like KC or Baltimore and a whole bunch of other teams who would like to add a starter but want to keep their mid-level first rounder.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I mean, would you all rather roll with Gose in CF, or Goins at 2B? Gose for me, easily. Yup definitely. At least Gose is kinda ok? with some intresting tools and a little upside
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 f*** just give Ubaldo the money so we don't sign Ervin hahaha
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Scouting org. They're probably looking at velocity, ERA, pitch grades, mechanics, etc. I know you're cynical (and with good reason), but how is ERA more scouty than Ks or GBs? I think you'd have to concede that AA has made more shrewd moves than idiotic ones, on the whole.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Yup definitely. At least Gose is kinda ok? with some intresting tools and a little upside Gose can probably give us 1-2 WAR on def and bsr alone. Think Bourjos lite.

I am greedy and still want Goins and Gose in backup roles, at least for now May have a different opinion after the 2014 season but for now I want Rasmus and a major league proven 2B who won't be a black hole in the lineup. We need it since our rotation is going to be no better than average even if we do sign Jiminez.

I think you'd have to concede that AA has made more shrewd moves than idiotic ones, on the whole. Because scouty types probably care about it too much, at least when they're asked to make roster decisions. I was mainly being facetious, but I'm almost sure they place much more value on ERA than they should. Run prevention can probably influence scouting grades too.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I have a sneaking suspicion that Brandon Phillips will be a Blue Jay. I know AA likes him but may not be able to afford. Ick to those last 2 years: 2014 33 Cincinnati Reds $11,000,000 2015 34 Cincinnati Reds $12,000,000 2016 35 Cincinnati Reds $13,000,000 2017 36 Cincinnati Reds $14,000,000 His 4 WAR seasons are likely all done.
