Ervin Santana 9.68%

Ubaldo Jimenez 67.74%

Neither of them; keep 2nd draft pick and slot money. 22.58%

Quick, call AA and tell him even most of the members of this board recognize that Jiminez is a better fit for the team and park and prob costs the same as Santana. Thanks.

it won't be that much with the compensation i guarantee you that, 14 mill max

Draft pick compensation + the Toronto factor (whatever the hell that is but at this point I assume it does exist) are at play though.

I can't see Toronto getting away with signing him by offering up what the rest of the market is willing.

Jays almost assuredly are looking at an overpay to get any decent FA at this point.

I'll be somewhat surprised if they sign him and very surprised if it only costs 14 a year.

The Draft Pick Each Team Would Have To Forfeit

"Ervin Santana isn't lowering his asking price as Opening Day inches closer, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Executives from teams with interest in the right-hander tell Heyman that despite the onset of Spring Training, Santana is still seeking something in the range of $50MM over four years -- the same contract signed by Ubaldo Jimenez with the Orioles and Matt Garza with the Brewers, and $1MM more than Ricky Nolasco got from the Twins.

Heyman adds that Santana has been seeking four years "for a while now," and that won't change no based on the calendar or fellow draft-pick free agent Nelson Cruz settling for a surprising one-year, $8MM deal. According to Heyman, the Orioles, Mariners, Rangers and Rockies are looking at Santana right now, and the Blue Jays are believed by some to still be a possibility."

Now that Boras has made it clear that he's willing to adapt to the Blue Jays 2014 payroll parameters to make a deal happen, I really couldn't care less about Santana. I would legitimately get upset if the Jays opted to spend too much money on him rather than deal with Boras and sign Drew.

Every week that Happ and Drabek suck make me much more worried about the rotation

If Santana would sign for 3 years right now I'd do it

Even then it's not a great rotation by any stretch but at least it keeps Rogers, Romero, Drabek and Happ further away from getting starts. We have way too many fringe #5 caliber starters and not enough mid-rotation and above guys. I'm worried.

Is a 4th year that much a deal breaker? After 2015 the Jays have an option for Dickey and otherwise nothing, so its not like we are over committed long-term to too many SP. Likely the team is rebuilding big time at that point (its after the 3 winning window proposed by AA - year 1 didn't work out well). So sure we wont need him but having him stick around an extra year isn't going to cause any problems and if he is actually good in the mean time he becomes a trade asset.

You're right, the team will be s*** in four years anyway and we'll have next to no payroll commitments. It is really shocking that AA hasn't done anything. Santana and Drew make so much sense. If AA doesn't sign anyone, he likely won't be around in four years to deal with the consequences anyway.

Amen to that

And yeah right now I'd give him 4/44 and I think he'd take it

AA really has to sign Santana. The rotation is already going to be bad, but we're a single injury away from all-out gong show territory. One good thing that's happened so far is that Drabek, McGowan, and Happ have been the gas cans we all know they are. We don't need one of them having a good spring and giving AA an excuse to rely on them this year.

I totally agree. At very least, i'm hoping one of Hutch/Stroman are coming north in April.

Signing Santana and giving Hutch the #5 spot would be ideal. Early on the #5 spot can be skipped to save IP from that spot with four off days in April.

Agree except I didn't think McGowan was going to be a gas can

damn you new avatar Gsnarls. I never anticipated that I would WANT to sign Santana. With all the other options we had.

I am despaired :(

LOL me too

In order of preference I wanted:

Sign Burnett 1 year

Sign Jimenez 3-4 years

Sign Capuano 1 year

Sign Santana 3-4 years

But that's where we're at. We need Santana it's a simple as that. Sigh. :(

So something like:

Dickey

Morrow

Buehrle

Santana

Hutchison

Janssen

Delabar

Cecil

Santos

Loup

Rogers

McGowan

AAA rotation: Happ, Stroman, Drabek, Nolin

DFA: Jeffress, L. Perez, Redmond

I like the look of that about as much as I'll like any feasible situation at this time of year. I'd prefer to DL a pen guy for a few weeks (Janssen?) so Redmond could slide in there instead of being DFA'd, and I would hope AA wouldn't roll with an 8-man pen just to keep Jeffress or Perez.

I just posted EXACTLY this in the roster thread. Funny.

We also need to package some of these excess guys in a package for a 2B, better SP, or better 4th OF/platoon guy

Surely to God some combination among Jeffress, Happ, Santos, Redmond, Izturis would pry a decent 2B or good 4th OF from someone. Add Sanchez and make it a SP.

Are you suggesting that roster moves should have been made to ensure a cohesive and complementary 25-man roster? If so you should tone it down with the unrealistic expectations.

I was. Will cease and desist immediately.

Even something like Santos + mid-level prospect for Craig Gentry would have been great.

Except AA could have gotten Gentry straight up for Santos and didn't see fit at the time now he's scratching for a 4th outfielder who can play CF

We also needed to make that move during the 2013 season and AA failed to pull the trigger. Is he really going to get to the point where he's looking at waiving guys out and instead takes some D level prospect to save face the day of that event ?

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread, was the Gentry for Santos deal something confirmed that could have actually been on the table or just speculation?

MASN's Kubatko:

From what I've gathered, the Orioles were comfortable offering him a three-year deal in the $30 million range, but Santana's camp kept trying to squeeze a fourth year out of them. He reportedly is seeking around $50 million, which doesn't interest the Orioles.
