Another pitching injury:

Jeff Wilson

‏@JeffWilson_FWST

Alexi Ogando leaves the game with an injury of some sort. #Rangers' rotation takes another hit.

Boy, are the Rangers, like the A's and Braves, catching the same injury bug the Jays had last year? This is contagious and ridiculous!

Angels are already salivating at possibly dominating the AL West, IF their pitching doesn't blow it like recent years.

If Ogando's out, their rotation will be Darvish, Perez, Hanson, Saunders, and one of Robbie Ross, Mike Kirkman or Tanner Scheppers.. what a mess!

Latest PECOTA rankings are out.. and boy, things look like they're going to be tight in the AL, with even the Jays in the mix.

It'd be nice if one of our young pitchers would break out.. then maybe our projected 81-81 record will go up a little bit. And Baltimore is still picked to finish last, as their rotation is nothing special, plus they are projected to have the worst OBP in the AL. BTW, thanks to injuries, the Braves took a BIG hit in the projected standings.

Cardinals Make Pete Kozma Available In Trades

By Mark Polishuk [March 19, 2014 at 7:41pm CST]

The Cardinals have made shortstop Pete Kozma available, ESPN New York Adam Rubin reports (Twitter link). Kozma was St. Louis' regular shortstop last season but gave the Cards only replacement-level production (0.0 fWAR and -0.2 rWAR), which led to the signing of Jhonny Peralta to a four-year, $53MM contract over the winter.

Kozma, who turns 26 in April, hit just .217/.275/.273 with one home run in 448 PA last season and he only produced a .652 OPS in 2752 minor league PA. While Kozma doesn't provide much pop, he is a strong defensive player, with a +9.9 UZR/150 over 1263 career innings at shortstop. Moving Kozma would leave the Cardinals somewhat thin at shortstop behind Peralta; infield utiltyman Daniel Descalso only has a handful of career games at short but he could be the top backup option. The newly-signed Aledmys Diaz is starting at Double-A and is perhaps better suited as a second baseman.

Shortstop has been one of the busiest positions on the rumor mill in recent days, given that the Tigers and Mets have been looking for upgrades, the Diamondbacks shopping Didi Gregorius, Stephen Drew's continued presence on the free agent market and the alleged discord between Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies. In regards to the Mets, Rubin doesn't think New York is interested in Kozma since he isn't a clear upgrade over incumbent shortstop Ruben Tejada.

d'arnaud has a good chance to be a bust. Syndergaard is what will kill AA in that deal, and I still believe he wasn't a necessary piece if they sweetened the deal another way. Bad trade either way, but throwing Syndergaard in there was awful.

First, let's see how Syndergaard does in AAA before we make any further judgements. And I wonder if AA knew the d'Arnaud looked like he might actually be a bust due to injuries he's had in the past. Oh, and Sydergaard won't be a full-time regular until 2016 at the earliest, as he is on an innings limit, especially considering the issues the Mets have had with their young pitchers in recent years.

Everyone should have had a good idea this was a strong possibility after they saw his k/bb start going downhill at the upper levels and watched him get injured year after year.

Jays projected to be 3rd in the AL in runs for, just behind Boston and LA.

Jays projected to be 3rd last in the AL in runs against, just ahead of the Twins and Astros.

Overall record 81-81. Sounds about right.

I have no doubt the Jays FO had decided D'Arnaud was seriously over rated. I don't think they ever planned to keep him around.

I don't believe the Jays traded D'Arnaud and Syndergaard because they thought either of them would bust, they just got bent over. AA just accepted that he had to pay that price for a CY award winner. The fact that RA came at a decent price was a big factor as AA had blown the budget in the Marlins trade.

The Jays decided they didn't want to wait for the farm to bear fruits and went into that off season with the mindset that they wouldn't strike out on improving the team, even if they had to overpay and well, that's what they did, overpay for days.

Especially with AJ Jimenez on the horizon by mid-season, providing he stays healthy, and hopefully a MUCH better catcher than the departed JP Arencibia.

The way that i tried to see the trade at the time, it was Dickey for Syndergaard, D'Arnaud always seemed over rated, but what do i know.

I'd like to think that this was the case, but it really probably wasn't. Let's be honest here, they have not shown much of an ability to identify and/or develop talent.

In this case, it was likely just the price they were willing to (over) pay for an aging CY winner.

Not intentionally wet blanketing.

Chapman just got hit in the head with a line drive. Never lost consciousness, unsure of severity though.

Salvador Perez hit him, he was crying.

Probably a little revisionist history going on, but I was the same way. Was perfectly fine with giving up D'Arnaud for Dickey. When Syndergaard got thrown in at the end, everything changed for me.

Disagree. I agree they haven't done a good job at developing talent. God knows even at the MLB level I've complained about Walker lots. But they have shown a good ability to identify it. They've traded away a lot of prospects and almost all those prospects go downhill after we trade them.

I suppose the best counterpoint to my argument is that they clearly OVER estimated JP Arencibia. It's hard to give them any "credit" for sensing TDA would bust in light of that. I do think they felt he was very injury prone and had legitimate long term health concerns though.
