I haven't seen any 6 and above year contracts to a FA switching teams that I would want the Jays to have done, so its hard to say the 5 year limit is dumb. I think they are reserving those type of contracts to home grown franchise players and I agree with them. So far the Jays haven't had anyone worth that kind of contract. If Lawrie develops into a Longoria level 3b you might see an exception to the rule.

What happens if a team buys multiple free agents that had a qualified offer? They can't lose more than 1 first round pick... Are they going to lose 1st, 2nd, 3rd... round picks?

Yup, or if they get awarded a comp pick for one of their qualified FAs signing elsewhere they'd lose it instead of second round. At least that's my understanding.

They already have, Ellsbury and McCann were both qualified FAs. GRanderson was too but the mets first round pick was protected so the mets would lose this second round pick, and the Yankees would gain a 1st round comp pick.

 

So far though, since the Yankees have signed 2 qualifying FAs, the would lose their first rounder and their first round comp pick, while keeping their second rounder, unless of course they sign another qualified FA, in which case they'd lose that too.

I don't think Reyes' contract is that bad. The Marlins were probably just being douchebags when they backloaded the contract (I wouldn't give them credit for thinking ahead), but it actually helps out because by the time his pay spikes, his salary won't be considered much in the new market. Hell, I don't even think Buehrle's is that bad.

 

If they do sign them, They certainly could help us fill our second base hole. Actually I wouldn't mind taking a flier on Smoak either.

In this situation, the Yankees lost their first rounder for signing McCann, they lost their Curtis Granderson compensation pick for signing Jacoby Ellsbury, and they lost their Robinson Cano compensation pick for signing Carlos Beltran. Had they not had those compensation picks, then yes, in that event, they'd lose their second rounder (at least, I'm fairly certain).
