Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 This is probably my most important thing. I would much rather have us sign a decent player and have Goins as a 25th man or as AAA depth. Then, if said decent player gets injured, we could call on Goins and we would have good depth. But if we go into next season with Goins as our starting 2B... and he gets injured, who replaces? Izturis? Ryan f***ing Schimpf? Jim Negrych? If Izzy didn't play here this year, he's exactly the kind of low cost bounce back option people would be talking about picking up to play 2nd next year.

It's going to take roughly a 3 win improvement over this year to be even close to acceptable. I'll take him or Goins on the bench but he's not too much of a bounce back candidate, unless bounce back means "not actually cost us wins"

He's most certainly not a negative WAR player, or at least shouldn't be.

Would be nice if he did though.

He's most certainly not a negative WAR player, or at least shouldn't be. The drop in defense is spectacular. He went from a - 1.3 defender to - 16.6. Part of that is too much playing time over too many positions, part of that is the Rogers turf (presumably) and part of that is just unbelievably bad. Is this normal? I have a hard time believing he got this bad, this fast. Should we consider such a terrible defensive season a bit of a fluke? It was a pretty spectular collapse on both sides of the ball. From useful role player to cesspool of suck in one season.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Not sure if it was said or not, but during the broadcast today Buck asked Alomar about Goins and he said he saw him in Buffalo and was so impressed that he mentioned it to AA and said he should give him a chance in the big league. And just to add to what was said before about his hitting, so far he isn't impressive but he hits the ball hard, he has low K rate and he puts the ball in play, give him some time with Mottola and he might do better, he has the ground work already.

True talent projected 63 wRC+ POS is a 63 wRC+ POS.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 True talent projected 63 wRC+ POS is a 63 wRC+ POS. You can't seem to grasp that he can get better. It's not all about numbers
flafson Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 You can't seem to grasp that he can get better. It's not all about numbers That what i think, he seem to have all the basic stuff so all that left is a bit of experience and polishing with Mottola. It's not like Sierra where he may be able to hit but he's such a liability as a fielder that you have no idea what to do with him, even yesterday, our coaches were shocked with him stealing 3rd base.
Nox Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 You can't seem to grasp that he can get better. It's not all about numbers And you somehow fail to realize that that projection has error bars on BOTH sides. He might actually be a 51 wRC+ hitter. IE an even bigger POS. 63 is a far better guess than whatever the you'd come up with.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 How far can this thread go? It's already passed a ton of the high post GDTs and now sits 9th overall in replies. Only another 120 replies until it pasts the highest GDT and the Draft Day thread to claim 5th overall. It'll need about 550 more to pass the DDL thread for 4th place. And then to the top 3 there is a huge gap. How did a thread on an organizational player make it so far?

The way these stays are presented its as if they are rigid. Really we're just talking mean probable outcome. Goins hitting enough to surpass a 90 wRC+ is possible, it's just highly highly unlikely. Probably a 99.99 percentile outcome.

I'm sure a couple of years ago on the old board there was a long thread on how John McDonald should be the starting shortstop.

I understand that that's a mean projection, but that projection is based past performance. I think he can get better. Now I assume that those projections take into account player age and normal progression, but based on what I've seen of Goins, and they guy of person/player he appears to be, I think he can learn a lot from our coaches and the potential to be a decent hitter.

Man I hope you optimists are right but let us be realistic , Even if his defense is well above average the guy is 25 years old and has a career minor league OPS of 706 . How much better do we think he can get if he is only a couple of years away from hitting his prime Sure there is the odd Bautista and Ibanez around but man those type of late career spikes are so few the odds are astronomical . Can he be a +1 war player I'm highly doubt but I'll cheer him on . On the other hand what does Jack Z think of Sierra ?? How about R Romero + 8 mil + Sierra for Ackley ? Anyone think this is acceptable ?

I'm buying a Ryan Goins jersey tonight!
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I'm buying a Ryan Goins jersey tonight! My first Jays' jersey-style T-shirt is going to be Goins. Isn't worth the cost of a real jersey but, I'm rooting for the kid.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I too have ordered my Goins jersey It'll look good next to Kalfus' when he makes the show.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Fair enough, keep the Kalfus Bisons jersey on one end and the Goins Jays jersey on the other with the other major leaguers.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 So how is everyone today? Things are pretty good on my end - I got a lot of work done today. It's raining here though, which is pretty s*****. My high school had a blackout. Everyone freaked the f*** out. Awesome.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Similar to a brown out but more severe.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 What's a blackout Power goes out?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 What's a blackout are you for real lol
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Likely but I thought it might have been different considering he said everyone freaked the f*** out Didn't seem that freaky to me Imagine the entire school losing power. I think its not really a scary freak out, more like an excited freak out.

Yeah, pretty much this. That and there are kids who are scared of the dark which was really f***ing funny lol. yes i'm a terrible person i know

I can imagine the whole school would crazy
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 He's also benched tonight because he's 4 for his last 29. Ryan Goins is really bad at hitting /captainobvious
