jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Second baseman available through free agency: Yuniesky Betancourt (32) Robinson Cano (31) Alexi Casilla (29) Jamey Carroll (40) - $2MM club option with a $250K buyout Mark Ellis (37) - $5.75MM club option with a $1MM buyout Omar Infante (32) Kelly Johnson (32) Nick Punto (36) Brian Roberts (36) Ramon Santiago (34) Skip Schumaker (34) Pretty thin market. The trade market probably includes Howie Kendrick, Rickie Weeks, Dustin Ackely, Gordon Beckham. You can probably cross out Cano lol and I'm sure teams will get into a bidding war for Infante. There really aren't any other names that standout as legit starters - perhaps Brian Roberts or Kelly Johnson are brought in to fight for a job with Goins, though don't think that's the ideal situation. I like the options on the trade market better. Don't think the Jays will land Kendrick, though Ackely would be a nice guy to take a chance on, or even Beckham.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 There are some nice 2B options, actually. I can't post from my phone but I have a leaderboard of them. Drew, Infante, Peralta, Ramirez and Guerrero are all options I like.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Does everyone think AA has the ability to upgrade all the positions ? Catcher , Starter ( or two) Left field . and 2nd base. Surely we aren't holding our breath on Melky or has he found a new Balco. Goins minor league #,s speak for themselves so I,m actually surprised he is hitting as well as he is . Best we should expect is a 670 something OPS . I look at how brutal our defense was at 2nd base and in Left Field and then look at where we can best improve production and defense . Left Field is a much higher priority than 2nd base and easier to improve in the FA market . There are some intriguing names out there like David Murphy, Chris Young, Nate McClouth, though not sure I'd feel comfortable with them as full time starters. More in a platoon role. As well, there are some bats like Morse and Kubel, who provide some pop, though I don't want them anywhere playing in the field on a full time basis. They'd just be cheap DH options or power bats off the bench. Melky is likely coming back next season as the starting left fielder. I don't see how McClouth would be a significant improvement over a healthy Cabrera, if any. I'd like to see the Jays take a gamble on Grady Sizemore. Bring him in on a minor league deal and see if he's healthy. I'm shocked no team has taken interest in him, though I guess he probably has the body of a 40 something year old now.

No reason to cross out Cano yet unless he specifically says so. We have the budget and he has friends on the team. Acquiring pitching might preclude signing Cano budget wise but in the scenario where no #1/#2 starter types are available ( and this may end up being the case ), Cano is in play. Rogers is not a poor owner. If they want to go big they can.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 The trade market probably includes Howie Kendrick, Rickie Weeks, Dustin Ackely, Gordon Beckham. + Espinosa and Lombardozi of the Nationals.

Oh the old board Seriously though, great idea. + Espinosa and Lombardozi of the Nationals. It goes beyond that. But I like Espinosa.

I see Melky as the 4th OF he was before the Roids . McClouth gives you gold glove defense and while he isn't your typical LF power bat he would be cost effective in front of our power bats .

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I don't think Dozier is a realistic option (in that I don't think he's available). Lombardozzi perhaps could be added, Ackley, maybe Wong. The problem is, I honestly don't see most of those guys as much of an upgrade over Goins / Kawasaki / Izzy, and we'd be risking them being unable to play on the turf. Cano, Peralta, Infante, Kendrick, Ackley (and the unavailable Dozier) I think are the only guys I might be tempted on, and Cano isn't going to happen. Ackley and Kendrick may or may not be available, etc.

Ackley has been kinda amazing in CF for the Mariners and I'm leaving him off purposely.

You never know, but I think Dozier would be far far more unavailable than Ackley. Speaking of the Mariners, I'd love to pry Saunders away from them for cheap (Michael)

Robinson Cano Jhonny Peralta Omar Infante Howie Kendrick Stephen Drew Daniel Murphy Brian Dozier Alexei Ramirez Alexander Guerrero I'd bet all of those guys are better than Goins last year. They're definite upgrades imo. Beckham could be as well.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Drew line drives are .253/.333/.443 He has 3.2 WAR which is mostly defense and a tiny bit offense, i'm no genius but his numbers seem very similar to Goins. If Goins can hit .250, there is no reason why he can't give you similar value to Drew.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Right now Goins numbers are still out of whack (for better or for worse) so it's not unreasonable for him to be similar to Drew in terms of production.

flafson Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 For real? Common, you know i'm for real... Drew had a long time to get his major league hitting to where it's at, Goins had a little over a month. IF Goins is given major league time, he might give you similar production, their line drives are similar.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Now I remember why I love this thread
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Not really. I produced literally exactly what he was projected to produce offensively. It would be very, very surprising to him him approach a 75 wRC+, let alone 100+ like Drew. Umm, any scrub can be a league average bat given enough opportunity. Your dumn
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Umm, any scrub can be a league average bat given enough opportunity. Your dumn So chalk up league average production for JPA next year? He's certainly been given opportunities.
Jays Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 So chalk up league average production for JPA next year? He's certainly been given opportunities. Chalk him up for a 700 OPS and a full season of games next year... that's what AA is doing.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Stephen Drew has a 109 wRC+, and 96 in his career. Goins has a 62 wRC+, and only 90 as a 25-year old in AAA. Drew is a much, much better player than Goins projects to be. But AA's gut is in charge and the Fat greek's gut likes one dimensional players with non existent up side, so we can expect Goins and JPA next year. funny that JPA's one dimension is twitter.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Chalk him up for a 700 OPS and a full season of games next year... that's what AA is doing. Maybe JPA should have caught without a protective cup after all? didn't he hit most of the year without a bat?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Maybe JPA should have caught without a protective cup after all? didn't he hit most of the year without a bat? One of the best one-liners yet!

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I certainly wouldn't rely on him as a regular. Any reason why? Career 103 wRC+, 9 fWAR in 5 seasons, 2.3 fWAR/162 games, durable, and would probably get an uptick in dingers in RC. Nothing from his stats scream unsustainable, either. He'd probably come at a reasonable cost and he's a reliable 2B.

Bad defender, doesn't walk, doesn't hit for much power (I doubt the RC will help his HR rate that much) especially since he doesn't hit many flyballs. And can't hit lefties.
