Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Lawrie and Rasmus are the only 2 guys we have in our 9 right now that I'd consider part of our young core going forward. The rest are trade bait for the inevitable rebuild after next season after AA and Beast-tonne are gone.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 That single today he had with 2 strikes on him was excellent... man that bat action has really tamed down.
admin Site Manager Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 I didn't know he was hitting this good, as I haven't really been watching. I watched a game about a week ago and was thinking "wow his swing really looks good." Really just seems to have great control of his bat right now.
Pete_7 Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Showing flashes of his true potential, he looks great at the dish right now
flafson Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 We are missing a few young hitters to be honest.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 He looks much better than before. He looked lost at the plate for large stretches of the last season and a half, so hopefully this continues.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I think Gose needs to be up here with Mottola
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Hes a good hitter. They rushed him back at the start of the season. That clearly shows to be true. And he was over-eager. That was part of it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I like how he seems to be asking other players on the team for advice and talking to Mattola. Could he be maturing? That bout of failure may have done home some good I thinks. Didn't help the team any this year but may have humbled him a bit and made him open up to more coaching/input.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 We are missing a few young hitters to be honest. We got 2. So......yeah. 3 if Gose comes up and can tread water enough at the plate to let his D and speed come into play to get him above replacement level.

Imagine if Arencibia did this, he might be able to put up a positive WAR.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 lets not get Lind'd by a small sample size of good patient AB's. He's not going to keep a 12% K-Rate like he has the past month, however I'd like to think he has the ability to get close to the 9% BB rate. if he goes back to swinging at everything next month we seriously need an overhaul of coaching staff's as it was so obvious (beyond the numbers) that Lind was a better hitter back in May, then suddenly his approach changed. Lawrie is a different looking hitter out there right now, different than he was 2 years ago even. If he reverts it might be my final straw with this team (which doesn't mean anything as I'll still watch every game I can)
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Lind had a ridiculous BABIP and hadn't really made any changes to his stance (I don't think), nor was he affected by an extremely low BABIP or injury problems (unless his chronic back ******** was involved).
Arkadium Verified Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Brett is a stud but can he put it all together for a full season (incl. not getting injured)? That is the real question.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 His hands have seemed to have quieted down considerably, which I think was part of the reason he had trouble barreling up baseballs. He's also staying on the outside pitch very well, which is a step in the right direction for him.

I'm definitely no expert, but it looked to me like that had something to do with why some of his swings looked so loopy.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 You're exactly right. From all my experiences, movement just makes hitting more difficult. It works for some guys, after years and years of repetition. Just a quick YouTube search of videos to refresh my memory, shows a lot less movement when he first came up. I don't know what influenced all this extra movement. It seems like its causing him to get around balls, rather than on top of them.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 It took a year and a half for them to notice and correct it? Or it took Lawrie that long for him to admit it to himself and quite down. It wouldn't be the first time a player hung on to some sort of bad mechanic for too long.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Lawrie's unwillingness is probably a more accurate guess. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if DeRosa has made quite an influence on him lately. SSS sure, but his AB's have looked so much better.
