Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Why? Because he'll be dead last out of all Jays players to meet the qualified minimum of 1,500 plate appearances in BA and OBP. It's funny because with a .223 career avg and .270 OBP with both those stats heading in the wrong direction, it's not even close. Up until now 45 players have made the minimum requirement. Ed Sprague and Alex Gonzalez are last in BA at .245 and Alfredo Griffin is last in OBP at .280. Imagine if he still had his Twitter account we could point that out to him. What's kind of sad about this is that Colby is not too far off from 1,500 PA either and with a .231 BA in a Jays uniform, he'll bridge the gap between last and second last for JPA. So let's hope he has a hot streak for the rest of the year to bring that up a bit and to help us forget that we have had to live through two Jays regulars that could be the worst hitters for average the team has ever had. Here's the leaderboard as it stands. Check out #11 for OBP...I wouldn't have guessed he's that high...pretty impressive list of players that he ranks above. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/leaders_bat_50.shtml Batting Average (?) IronLadle Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 He's the worst player to ever put on the uniform. He's not even the worst on the team, Thole is much worse.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 He's the worst player to ever put on the uniform. He's not even the worst regular starter in club history. The 1977 team was a joke! The players in 78, 79, 80 and 81 were pretty horrible too.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 He's not even the worst on the team, Thole is much worse. Guess again. Thole is a better defender and hits right handers well when he gets regular at bats. JPA continues to play because it would rock the boat huge if he sat and because his power and athletic ability (supposedly) still give him a higher ceiling.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 This list also reminded me of how good Frank Catalanotto was A strict platoon player who was moved to the outfield because he was as bad a second baseman as Bonifacio, if not worse.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 And I'd prefer they actually make an in division trade and ship him today to the Yankees. They could actually use him and would probably overpay. J.R Murphy and a bag of balls would work for me but AA could probably also get Slade Heathcott too. Slade has been a K machine, which would be good if he weren't an outfielder. His prospect ranking is tanking as fast as Deck McGuire's but he's still 22 and has all that toolsy upside that AA loves.

JPA continues to play because it would rock the boat huge if he sat and because his power and athletic ability (supposedly) still give him a higher ceiling. I don't have to guess. Thole has a weaker arm, his defence is insignificantly better and doesn't hit for average or power. Thole has gotten worse each year while J.P has improved each year.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Huh what? JP has improved? Thole hits for average. We haven't seen any sample size this year and he played almost all of 2012 while injured.

KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Thole throws 2 mph slower (avg) and is more accurate and uses better footwork. His best time to 2b beats JPA's on the watch btw.

Loved how Thole gunned Billy Hamilton a few times this year. Wish he'd get some playing time. He was in such a groove last year with the Mets before he got hurt and he was smacking line drives all over for Buffalo. Let him play!

Arm strength is only part of it, but it means nothing if your reaction time is that of a turtle. To add to that: Thole career BA/OBP: .256/327 JPA career BA/OBP: .223/.270. JPA's OBP and OPS seems to be trending downwards too over the past 3 years. JPA is only better than Thole in the power department and that does not make up for all his other deficiencies which include the fact that he can't catch a KB and Thole can.

wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) I think Griffin said it best in his column; Beeston and AA didn't choose to send D'arnaud to the Mets over JPA; New York demanded him as part of the package with Syndergaard (God help us with this trade in 2 years). The Mets simply knew what all of Baseball knew, namely that D'arnaud is a better catching prospect than JPA will ever be. I never thought JPA would be this bad though; how sad is it when I find myself longing for the days of Yan Gomes? Edited July 25, 2013 by wardhenke1

Thole was badly injured and came off the DL and played the season way below 100% and caught Dickey every 5th day. Melky has played this year in better health than Thole did in 2012.

KSaw Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Well agree to disagree. That was a nasty concussion and he was carrying an OBP above .350 at the time. Not bad for a guy who really is a platoon specialist who can't hit leftys, though has faced many. He receives better, calls a better game and can actually block a ball to his right.

Errorcebia Verified Member Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 His WAR has not improved every year. He is only worth 0.3 WAR this season. He's way off pace to meet his dismal total from last year. He is actually regressing.
