JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Per the Jays official site. Fills the spot on the 40-man roster freed up by Wang being DFA. Hopefully he'll be able to bounce back and become at least a decent starter in the bigs. He's still only 25.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 I refuse to give up on Drabek. His stuff is great. I feel he will be a guy who will pitch better as he ages. Safe bet since he can't get really get much worse. He's one of those guys that just needs to aim for the middle of the plate and let the sick movement on his stuff take over. He shouldn't be nibbling.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 If they gave McGowan all this time they should give it to him. Hopefully his disaster was due to his injury and not him falling apart. If I remember correctly he passed the initial tests when he left the game early and they were surprised he tore his UCL and needed TJS. Might explain his struggles if he was injured and not really feeling it. Either way I hope he gets the time he needs and can come up and do something. He can't be worse. Maybe the pressure will be off now where he's not expected to go a full year and might help.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Not saying that he'll pan out because I don't have a crystal ball but I will point out that he's been no more wild than Randy Johnson, Dave Stewart or Nolan Ryan were early in their careers.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 All we can do is let him go down and get innings under his belt. If he does well maybe he is a solid depth option for 2014. Right now though I wouldn't even consider bringing him up for this season at all. Still only 25, give it a shot and if it doesn't pan out he will likely be another big arm for the pen.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Next Chris Carpenter C'mon Drabek, The ball is in your side
backontop Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 I can't wait until they say he is fired. His name only rings big because he is DOUG Drabeks son, and he is who we got for Roy Halladay, quit letting the jays owners and sportscasters who work for Rogers fool you into that we have another Doug Drabek almost ready to join the Blue Jays.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Get him on them weighted ballz and he'll be just like his dad.

KSaw Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 In fairness to Drabek, I've seen games in which he had 10+ strikes turned into balls simply because Arencibia was handcuffed by his late movement. Heck, I saw Drabek fire a strike that was missed clean by JPA that was a ball after it went off the umpire's chest pad. And I'm not exaggerating. In a game v Texas JPA blew 7 in one inning and Drabek ended up not making it out of it. That's brutal! When you have a pitcher with filthy late movement and questionable command, a catcher has to receive and frame every pitch well. Many do pass through the zone but you're never getting the call if you lunge and slap at it. Last year Drabek seemed to be doing very well with the Juan Guzman formula of just fire away and let the ball move through the zone. Arencibia did him no favours.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 He was optioned?? And we're still going with f***ing Redmond on Sunday?? wtf You think he should start tomorrow's game?
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Lol it's year 1 from a 2nd Tommy John Surgery. He's not going to throw more than 40-60 pitches per appearance this year.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 He's not even close to being ready yet Of course not. I asked because the poster seemed surprised he was optioned.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Drabek was optioned the second they had a roster spot. This stopped the clock on the MLB service time he was accumulating. The service time was becoming an issue.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 He was optioned?? And we're still going with f***ing Redmond on Sunday?? wtf He isn't ready, only throwing two innings a start so far. Give him a month
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 He was optioned?? And we're still going with f***ing Redmond on Sunday?? wtf Drabek hasn't even had any rehab starts over 2 innings so there's no way they'd let him start in the majors right now
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Oh I thought he had full rehab? As in games in single A and such? If not then I understand lol Yeah man. Longest he went I think was 2 or 3 innings.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Drabek should be nowhere near this team until next season at the earliest. Just let him build arm strength and get some innings under his belt. He could be a big depth SP for us next year.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Nice DRABEK FOR CLOSER (not all caps)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Yep. We need someone (Drabek, Hutch, Morrow, Romero) to get the Hell back and start helping this f'n team.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Yep. We need someone (Drabek, Hutch, Morrow, Romero) to get the Hell back and start helping this f'n team. I wouldn't let Drabek or Hutch near this team until mid season next year. Let them get innings under their belt and take it slow. Hutch could be a solid SP for this team for quite a few years and who knows what we will get from Drabek, but he could be a decent back end guy or a late inning guy for us.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 who knows what we will get from Drabek, but he could be a decent back end guy or a late inning guy for us. Or he could turn out to be a solid #2 starter. But that may just be wishful thinking on my part.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Or he could turn out to be a solid #2 starter. But that may just be wishful thinking on my part. He has the potential to do it, but at this point if he can be a solid back end guy for us I would take it. We need cheaper SP options on this team if we have any chance of success down the road.
