8D Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 What do you guys think about bringing Doc back when he returns from shoulder surgery next season? lol
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I honestly don't know how we can make a trade, we have no prospects to trade, all we have is Bonifacio and maybe some of the rehab pitchers. Eat all of Peavy's contract, toss in $800k slot allocation and send two C+ prospects.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Yup, its funny how many people think this team can't spend more money. It's not a matter if they can, its more a matter of how much more Rogers thinks they can make by spending more and based on the spike in attendance and solid TV ratings, I say Rogers is going to take this payroll to the next level. I think it's because this ownership group was so stingy with the payroll until just this past off-season. The current payroll is already set to go up an additional $15M just next season. The payroll that was added this year hasn't exactly worked out, obviously. To assume that Rogers would be so willing to add even more money is ludicrous. Could they? Yes. Will they? I don't know, and neither does anyone else.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Peavy is a good fit, though Garza or Norris wouldn't be terrible options. All three of those pitchers come from teams that are interested in international free agent slot money. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Peavy turns out to be the guy AA trades for. He would fit in well, give this team a significant boost and still be around next season when we would still need him.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 What do you guys think about bringing Doc back when he returns from shoulder surgery next season? lol No, no and no! I'm guessing that he stays in Philly, for a lot less guaranteed money and incentives. I could also see him taking the same kind of deal with Colorado. Being at home, coming off this kind of injury might appeal to him. He's a Denver area guy afterall and they have a decent and improving club.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Amaro will get a bunch of new old guys and try it again. Halladay, Utley, Ruiz and others are coming off the books and they could trade Papelbon. Philly has more flexibility than you'd think. over and over again? The Braves and Nats look pretty young and talented......."No Country for old man" 6 total players, $104,500,000 total salary, $17,416,667 avg salary http://www.baseballprospectus.com/images/charts/compensation/PHI_2014_year_overview.png
backontop Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Spanky, the Blue Jays are just not that good. If we was to get lucky and win a wild card spot with 83 wins and make the playoffs, it's my opinion Rogers would leave the team mediocre going into next year. But if it is clear four weeks today that we are not going to make the playoffs, they will then try again next year to be a great team like they did this past winter. Some people get the false impression that if we are sellers in late July, we'll have to wait five more years before we can contend. Selling only one or two players (or even 3 or 4) like Josh Johnson isn't going to set us back five years. Rogers will put up the money when the time is right and I hope they don't think a .500 club in late July is worth buying some of these players I've read about in this thread.

To assume that Rogers would be so willing to add even more money is ludicrous. Could they? Yes. Will they? I don't know, and neither does anyone else. No one knows, your right. But does rogers really care about winning or making money? Attendance is up, another big name or two and they will ride that into significant ticket sales heading into 2014. Where there is optimism, there is hope and people will eat that s*** up. As long as Rogers thinks they will benefit financially from adding to payroll they will. Eventually this team will have to win to sustain this success, but right now, they can still sell the idea of a contender for next season by showing they will keep spending.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Don't forget the option/ buy-out. Also factor in Peavy's injury history and remember that he's injured now. They almost passed on resigning him this year. Anyway, the Chicago media speculation values him for 1 very good prospect if the ChiSox eat a lot of salary or a lot less if they dump it all.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I still don't think Peavy comes without one of our big-4 going to Chicago. Dude is coming off a 4.5 WAR season, has been lights put when healthy this year, and is only owed 1/14.5. This is not a salary dump situation - the Sox have a legit front-rotation arm on a good contract to trade. Yeah I can see a key prospect being moved for Peavy. For what he costs financially he is a bargain at that price so its not just going to be taking on his salary. We all know things don't look good long-term unless AA has a ton of luck with prospects panning out. That's not the point here though, AA has to keep pushing forward and get this team into contention this season or next otherwise 2014 might be his last year as GM.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 “I had a club I talked to (Monday) night, they said another week to 10 days” - AA Some of the names being thrown around in the article are Lee, Iwakuma, Peavy, and E. Santana. I would take any of those, but I'd be scared to think on what we would have to give up for the first 2 names. I'm curious to who AA was talking about when saying that? Or maybe he just said that to make it look like he was trying to do something... http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/wang-rocked-early-often-in-jays-loss-to-tigers/ Garza <3
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 No denying Lee is the best player however, IMO Iwakuma or Peavy will provide great results while minimizing cost and payroll. We're on his no-trade list apparently (according to Kirksaw)
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Yep. They'll go for it. Trading Papelbon will be key though. If they have ~$50M to play with and keep Lee, RAJ could make some moves and make his team interesting again. You also have to factor in their complete return for Utley, Young and Papelbon. If Texas, Detroit and Boston all go hard for Papelbon, the Phillies will win big. The Utley to Baltimore rumors won't go away and LJ Hoes would certainly be in that deal if it happens. He's likely ready to play in the Majors. That would be a nice young outfielder for Philly.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 What happened to the 8M that Loria was supposed to send to the Blue Jays, did it end up being Monopoly money?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Let's say we move Osuna and Pillar for Peavy - what have we accomplished? I still don't think we're going anywhere this year, so 2013 is a writeoff. We've gained a 33-year old Peavy for 2014, but also committed to a $150 million payroll. That doesn't include JJ. So Peavy replaces JJ next year - that's functionally equivalent. Payroll is up $30 million, we're down another good prospect, and our roster is the same as the one that failed in 2013, only a year further removed from peak age in the case of most players. We're treading water here. I don't disagree, but what is AA going to do? He has to make a play either before the deadline or this winter.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I don't disagree, but what is AA going to do? He has to make a play either before the deadline or this winter. Well, there's a train of thought that making the trades they made last offseason should help with making Toronto a place where top FA's will want to play, let's put this to the test and sign a FA pitcher? I know it's a weak FA crop, but just sayin'. How about getting the Cuban FA pitcher who's said to be MLB ready and is 25 (?)?
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 We're on his no-trade list apparently (according to Kirksaw) Much of his no trade list has been made public. Yankees, Boston, Detroit and Toronto are on his very long list.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Oh he'll make a move. And it will probably please the fanbase. They'll be happy to see the end of JJ and his poor ERA and W-L record. "Just another AJ Burnett". Peavy will be a shiny new toy. Really though it will just be another couple steps down the road to being in a Phillies type of bind; payroll 25% higher, the farm a little thinner, the team a little older, and playoff chances for 2014 pretty remote. Seems about right.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Just don't give up Sanchez or Osuna and I'm fine. They might be the first to go.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I doubt it. AA can't be that stupid. We trade anymore great prospects even if we make the playoffs 2 of the next 3 years. We will probably then miss the playoffs for another 20 because we will have nothing. AA probably want's to get through the next 2-3 years without being fired.

I say we should try to extend JJ ASAP if his agent is dumn and accepts a low payment due to his 'poor performances' and health.

We're treading water here. I would assume Pillar. He is a C+ prospect. They wouldn't get Osuns straight up if they unload the contract. This kind of trade isn't lateral or a hit. JJ still equals a pick once qualified and Peavy's trade value would be just as solid, if not better next year if the team couldn't win. A bunch of veterans is only a bad thing if you keep them all and don't win. There are always deadline opportunities to sell them for prospects.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I say we should try to extend JJ ASAP if his agent is dumn and accepts a low payment due to his 'poor performances' and health. I like him and know that we haven't seen the best of him but I wouldn't do that. The pick and salary relief are too important. We wouldn't even be discussing Peavy if JJ didn't have an expiring contract.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 He should be fired based on the decision that he f***ed up our future. His entire legacy went out the window when he traded most of our prospects already. You guys can't honestly tell me this team wins a world series adding Cliff Lee. We need another bat for sure as well. Everyone talks of the number of prospects he dealt. Of them all I say we miss only 2 of them, maybe 3 and it's 3 if Hech pans out. The odds of both of the Landing arms panning out aren't high.

KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Supposedly and that's fine. 3 months of Garza in exchange for some kids and some slot allocation money is fine. Also keep in mind that if the club was tanking at the end of July, AA could flip him again quickly.

Pffft - we got Jose F'n Reyes. Nicolino? Meh, the other two Lansing guys are almost certainly better. D'Arnaud we might pine for thanks to JP Arencibia, and Syndergaard sounds like he's progressing beautifully and because home grown, cheap, controllable, quality starting pitching rocks the house.
