Morneau simply makes too much money and isn't an above-average hitter. Great guy (and Canadian!) but not worth it.

And he actuay really wants to play here. But... Too bad. :(

Actually, if the Twins ate most of his salary and he accepted a bench role, I'd take him. Could be a nice piece for cheap for a playoff push.

I'd take him as the 2014 version of Mark DeDosa.

Ew I just looked up his 2013 stats though. Morneau has lost all his power. Still a passable OBP at .336 but only 3 HR and a .725 OPS despite full playing time.

I'd have to pass. He's declining sharply in his early 30's.

He was great in the baseball classic so i can't believe too much has changed since then.

I really don't want another "power bat" if you can even call him that anymore, I much rather have a pitcher we can rely on to give us a good start which is odd to be saying with the rotation we have/had more importantly though is a more defensively sound 2B that can get on base regularly. Unless its 06-09 morneau somehow then i'm in.

Pitcher yes

But I can almost understand AA's reluctance with all the arms built up on the DL and minors that might factor in second half.

Well yea that's what i figured plus if Dickey and Johnson come around which at times look like they will we have that pitcher we can rely on without trading away anything which is why i'm leaning more towards a 2B

JM isn't even worth a couple pages of discussion. I still like Eric Chavez as an impact bat to pursue. I would like a backend SP to shore up the rotation.. guys like Garza and Nolasco... but SP is traditionally so expensive and prob wont be worth what it costs for those guys.

I know I keep harping on this but we need at least one more good hitter, maybe two. There are way too many low batting average, low on base types in our lineup, that it makes it difficult for us to scratch out wins without the homerun. The positions we could most use an upgrade in are CF, C, 2B.

Right now we're 6th in slugging (duh), but 16th in the MLB in team average and 19th in on base percentage.

At this point I would trade Rasmus 14 homeruns for a guy who can play just as good defense, but hit for a higher average and get on base over .350. Same with Arencibia. I would trade the homeruns, for better defence, average, and on-base percentage. That would balance our lineup out much better.

And who do you propose we get for Rasmus and Arencibia?

He just told you. Guys with good defense and better than league average BA and OBP, you know, those guys hat never really get traded?

A guy like Eric Chavez or Nate Schierholtz might not cost a lot and they fit the bill. Nobody is going to trade for NS as a .900 OPS bat but he could be a solid 2-3 WAR guy with some upside. I would give up a non-essential piece for those guys.

I do not mean trade those players for better versions of themselves. That would not make any sense. I'm speaking in general terms about sacrificing power at those positions for more contact and on base ability.

Unfortunately the market doesn't line up with our needs, as the players most likely to offer help with the bat are mostly corner positions. The hitting from 3rd base could certainly be improved upon, and there are options out there such as Aramis Ramirez and Michael Young who wouldn't cost any of our high end prospects, but Brett Lawrie is pretty much going nowhere, so it's a moot point.

Nate would be an improvement on Melky for sure. If only Melky could adequately play centerfield, we could target a corner outfielder.

Been beating this drum for days. Nate is available. A bigger deal to get he and Garza is not a fantasy. It's realistic. Schierholtz would allow Melky to DH or rest.

Immediately Schierholtz and Davis could go into a platoon in LF. Nate would be an obvious #2 hitter behind Reyes and ahead of Bautista.

I dunno if I want to trade for Nate or not (probably), but imagine an OF with Schierholtz-Gose-Bautista. THOSE ARMS. WOW.

I remember last year or two years ago there were some posters on here that said they wouldn't even trade Lawrie straight up for Stanton. Crazy! Sometimes I find a lot of young players on the Jays are overhyped on these boards.

I was a fan of Lawrie and I still think he has enough talent to become a solid player. Though even two years ago, I wouldn't even have to think about trading Lawrie straight up for Stanton.

What do you think gets that done?

HYPOTHETICALLY it's probably Lawrie + Gose + Osuna + Sanchez + Jimenez, at the minimum.

Schierholtz? why?

He isn't an impact bat against RHP and he isn't a good defender, not a significant upgrade over Melky.

Gose+Rajai over him

Vs RHP

Schierholtz .330 wOBA - D - speed = Not big upgrade over Gose

All speculation but I like this guy's writing. Good read:
