I wouldn't trade Joe Mauer's hair for Trout.

If we give up an asset for Morneau I will go crazy (read: crazier).

Stand the heck pat or trade JJ and Buehrle if they're below .500 around July 25th. Enough with gutting the farm system.

I say:

Replace JPA with a solid defensive catcher

Upgrade 2B to Utley to replace JP's home runs

McCaan for the win. Open your wallet Rogers the fans keep flooding in. :P

That's the thing, they could've gone after Russell Martin who's not only good, but has the added bonus of being Canadian. Imagine 2 Canadian position players on a team going for it! It was not to be, they decided to continue waiting for JPA to improve from a top10C to a Top5C...lol.

Russell Martin cost $17 million for two years after hitting .211 the year before, major overpayment.

I hope we spend on starting pitching - if our starters become consistent, coupled with our ridiculous bullpen then were one of the best pitching staffs in baseball

Right, and an excellent battery mate should be ignored for said pitching staff?

If we spend a ridiculous amount on a catcher, than that's money we can't spend on starting pitching. Catchers on the free market are usually overpriced a lot like starting pitching. I'll take a solid starter over a solid catcher any day.

I don't know if you noticed but they DID spend big on starting pitching; Buehrle's contract pays him 48M (?) over the next 3 years. JJ is a FA at the end of the year and is making 13M this year. Dickey is making like 5M this year, but will make 25M over the next 2 years. Then you add what these 3 cost in terms of prospects and it was pretty extravagant spending.

Oh J.A. Happ cost prospects as well and got an extension. And I'm leaving out our main man Ricky Ro who's pitching in AAA.

You can say they acquired the wrong pitchers, but you cannot say they didn't spend on pitching.

Not really when you consider his defence behind the plate and the fact that he does have some decent pop for a catcher. He still put up a 2.0 WAR last season despite not having the greatest season offensively. Already this season he's at 2.4 WAR. He's 4th in catchers WAR.

Pretty much......you build a club up the middle first. So many people underestimate the teams fielding captain (catcher) in a big, big way. Any type of production out of that spot is a bonus.

We tied a franchise record for consecutive wins with our field manager, how horrible can he be? Some Jays fans over exaggerate the incompetence of J.P that's it's just ridiculous.

Martin's a good catcher, but $8.5 million for a 7-9 hitter? Way to much.

Look at the teams that have the best rotations (Atlanta, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Oakland), none of them spend really anything on free agent starters. How our investment in JJ, Dickey and Buehrle has turned out should teach you that it's best not to keep throwing money at pitching. The Jays should sign a few low-cost guys to compete for the fifth spot and be done with it. Don't blow the whole budget on a pitcher, instead spend that money on a catcher or other position of need.

They're good at building their own rotations, something the Jays started to do but didn't have the patience for.

As far as JJ, Dickey and Buerhle go, I'll never hate on the Marlin trade. We gave up so little to acquire those guys. The Dickey trade was a joke.

I hoping Jimenez is ready to go for next year, I think he's going to be good.

I remember many times when I was on the mound I couldn't stand a certain catcher catching me........I always had to shake him off, ruined my rhythm, etc, etc....I wanted the weak hitting catcher in this case with my club. We were in sync and thought the same pitch selection for the most part. I always pitched better. It's so true, I pitched competitively for 25 years at the best leagues available at my age. This certainly holds water.

Maybe the pitchers DO love throwing to JPA. As fans that's something we really have no knowledge of.

I wish we were gonna be buyers. Because otherwise they will bring this same dumb team back in 2014 pretending that well, We goofed in April, but we'll get them next year. Except this past winter, the owners only tried to build a team that may catch a wild card spot but realized "NOW we need for ONE GREAT season in 2013 so that we can glorify the fans and keep them happy for 10 years and get them to open their wallets to pay for more TV packages now that "If you want to see the Blue Jays" you will have to pay for Sportsnet One. It backed fired on them. We may sneak into a "losers card", but only to get beat in the first round. Our starting pitching is not good enough to win a short series play off.

Guess he doesn't feel like getting pitching, only piece remaining is 2B.

That is a disgusting view to have on aquiring pitching AA.

First of all, we lost 3 pitchers in 4 games last year. Just like that. In the blink of an eye.

Morrow + Johnson are glass.

It would be a miracle to get anything out of Romero.

Wang is a ticking timb bomb. Could be DFA'd tonight if he gets lit up.

Buehrle just isnt that good. Cant stand watching him pitch.

Hutch? Drabek? What can you really expect outta these guys.

We need some legit starters in the worst away. We will piss away the season if we stay stat quo.

What? You want the guy to announce to the baseball world that he's looking for a pitcher? Almost every team wants to improve their pitching. I really hope at least Happ is back by the ASG to reduce the odds of AA trading away anymore prospects.

Get Peavy. The White Sox won't want much in prospects if we take on his whole salary, which we will. He's a stud and, current fluke wrist injury not withstanding, seems to be out of his injury-prone years of 2009-11.

Peavey makes a lot of sense; helps the team win now, gives them a front-end pitcher for when JJ walks (cross another off-season task off the list), reasonable 2015 player option and AA apparently had a deal in place to acquire him last off-season.

Posted
Can we take that salary on? It brings us to $150 million for next year with no JJ. That's almost a $30 million increase on this year.

I think Rogers sees how much attention a winner would get in T.O. right now. This year is the tip of the iceberg if they can win year-over-year. Hopefully Rogers sees this and bumps salary a bit as it's going to be hard to contend on a $120M payroll and the current roster.

Posted
I think it will go up a bit, but assuming a $30 million bump, especially if the team doesn't make any noise this year, is a but much IMO.

Ya, $150M seems like a reasonable top budget but, a $30M bump in payroll after what, $50M-$60M?, the previous season seems highly unlikely. I'd need to look at the 40-man a little bit more but, it's possible that $10M-$15M could be shuffled out with Peavey coming in.

Posted
Its a bit disappointing that we likely won't be able to move any vets without taking a bit hit to the team. Before the season, we could envision moving Rasmus and Buehrle so Gose and someone could slide in, but with how things have played out, we'd likely really miss both players.

Shouldn't move either of those guys at this point. Rasmus has been decent, Gose has been s*** in AAA, Buehrle salvaged this season and is as durable as ever. I might have to change my username to RaRaRasmutin haha

Lind, Melky and Janssen are the obvious trade candidates IMO but none open up that much payroll space. AA is going to have to be creative.

Posted
Agreed on all accounts. Bolded is what concerns me. When it came time to add wins last offseason he showed absolutely no creativity or efficiency. Unless payroll is cruising past 150, that will have to change.

Couldn't agree more, if the Jays and AA are to go on to success last off-season has to be a one off over-payment to take that next step.

Nolasco is looking for a new home. Last i heard Miami is giving him away to anyone who will pay the remainder of his 6 mil, might be a good idea to get him.

Rangers, Dodgers, Rockies In "Heavy Pursuit" Of Nolasco

By Steve Adams [July 2, 2013 at 9:42pm CST]

9:42pm: The Rangers, Dodgers and Rockies "are in heavy pursuit" of Nolasco, two executives tell ESPN's Jayson Stark. The Marlins are narrowing their focus to getting a deal done quickly, because the team would like to have the returning Henderson Alvarez make tomorrow's start instead of Nolasco. The Marlins are seeking a pair of prospects in return for Nolasco.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds that the Marlins are looking for prospects as opposed to a return like the Cubs received from the Orioles earlier today when they acquired Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop for Scott Feldman. Rosenthal opines that there is no sense in the Marlins' insistance that the acquiring team absorb the remaining $5.7MM on Nolasco's deal. The Marlins entered the season with a $36.3MM payroll -- the second lowest in baseball -- and will easily receive more than that figure in revenue sharing and national TV money.

You said they were giving him away to anyone that would take his salary, Kenny Ken Ken said that they were looking for prospects for him. With that many in the hunt, they'll get a good return.

"Here’s my question: Why are the Marlins so hung up on saving money?

Their $36.3 million Opening Day payroll was the second-lowest in the majors. They easily will exceed that amount, and perhaps more than double it, in revenue sharing and national TV money."
