DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Profar's value comes from being a shortstop. Shortstop value > 2nd base. Unless we're shipping Reyes somewhere else, I don't see how this benefits us to be worthwhile. You could go Profar SS, Lawrie 2B, Reyes 3B...
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 You could go Profar SS, Lawrie 2B, Reyes 3B... Reyes has only played at 2B for 43 games (and hasn't done that since 2004) and has played only 7 games as a 3B all the way back when he was a 17-year old

It could help keep him healthy too!
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Yeah, a lot of Reyes' value comes in that he's a SS just like it does with Profar.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Yeah, a lot of Reyes' value comes in that he's a SS just like it does with Profar. And adds up to Profar perhaps being the wrong trade target
sachmo55 Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 And adds up to Profar perhaps being the wrong trade target There's the option of trying to move Reyes and reallocating that money elsewhere.
Buster Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I doubt the trade for Bautista for Profra makes sense. SS is not a long term hole in the org. Sexy player, but a Bautista trade for other holes would make more sense (ie 2nd base). Maybe we flip Bautista and force someone to take salary (MB?), and then use that space to get Cano. as for trading Bautista, all you have to do is say: "with the emergence of Encarnacion, we thought it was a good time to move Bautista". There are other benefits: I think you would see someone more fitting to take over the leadership position. One of the benefits (amongst some drawbacks) of having Rogers, a media company, own the team, is that they are awesome at PR. Perhaps too good, given the hype of the season. But in the case of Bautista, it helps, because the marketing guys can quickly re-frame the team around an Encarnacion and Reyes, and convince the fans to move on from the Bautista love. How many more dingers does Bautista have in his current contract, anyway? 90 over the three seasons? 80? 100?
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I would do that in a heart beat. Free up cash, and have Profar and Reyes up the middle. However like most people said AA would have to have Balls to do it. Most on here would love it but the "casual" fans would just be raging and as much as I hate to admit it Toronto has a lot of them Casuals kicking around. Casual number one is Paul Beeston.... "Now who is this guy?? Ju... Ju.. How do you say his name?? Does Cito know about this?? I don't think he'd approve.... and what do we do with all the Jose bobbleheads... and his twitter account?? No. No. This idea doesn't seem to make sense to me."
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Is Pofar going to be as good as Myers??? Edit: I recognize this is an unanswerable question... Profar is 100x the player that Wil Myers is. Texas would be drunk to trade Profar for 2 or 3 expensive years of mid 30's Bautista. It would be grand f***ing larceny. Bautista for Kinsler makes sense, in a nutshell. I doubt even that happens though, because the respective personalities seem to important to both clubs.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Hard to say. But the Rangers need to give up more than Profar if they want Bautista. They also will need to give up some of their young pitching as well(Tepesch, Grimm, Perez, possible relief prospect Wilmer Font, Neil Ramirez, among others) It won't come cheap--AA's not giving up Bautista for nothing.

digiblader Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Bet the Angels would've done that in a heartbeat--considering their ownership is pretty stupid(see Pujols, Hamilton)
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Didn't the rangers offer Olt + for Dickey? Not sure. Completely different class of prospect though. Mike Olt is/was pretty overrated. 302 strikeouts in 270 minor league games. He's just another one of those strikeouts vs. power lottery tickets without an up-the-middle defensive profile. Profar just turned 20 and he's in the big leagues with a .760 OPS. He's insane. All things considered, as talented as a guy like Bryce Harper.
Respectimo Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Bautista straight up for Profar? I would never do that, Bautista is 3 season proven middle of the order bat. You don't get that by trading 1 unproven top prospect. I'd expect Profar+ for Bautista.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I'd rather trade less for Kinsler TBH Oliver and Rasmus or Gose??? Problem with Kinsler is the $$$ so I can't see us going for him...
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 This place is dumb. Ju1ced, burn it down.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I never quite understood the love with Profar. The best case scenario for him is a guy like Reyes'...Then again Reyes' was a #3 prospect. His prospect status is simply because he's a shortstop. If he wasn't a shortstop I doubt he'd be in the top 10 minor league rankings.

Nox Verified Member Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 All things considered, as talented as a guy like Bryce Harper. I think you're overrating Profar. Would be surprised if he put up the same season Harper did last year. He's a really valuable asset but so is Bautista. (2ish + 4 + 3.5 + 3 + 2) = 14.5 WAR for $50M is alot of surplus. Like $80M ish.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 No reason to trade Gose for Kinsler, that's crazy talk. Rasmus would make more sense from our side, especially financially. He's getting expensive in his arb years. I'd do Rasmus and Oliver for Kinsler in a second But Rangers probably wouldn't

You don't get that by trading 1 unproven top prospect. I'd expect Profar+ for Bautista. Yeah, I agree. Good way for a GM to lose their job. It's pretty crazy Profar is holding his own at this level at such a young age but we have to see when the league adjusts to him. I haven't read anything putting him as generational like a Harper, who some said had the most power they had ever seen.. nor did he put up cartoon numbers as an 18yo like a Trout.. so I just don't see him on that level of a "cant miss".. more like the "cant miss" that comes with your normal #1 prospect with ultra flashy tools.. and theres been plenty that flopped. The main thing that hurts the case is we are set at SS and if we move Reyes.. then we really diminish his value.. ..also the for the record, 3 years (is it 4?) after trading the best SP in baseball.. our return is a broken down prospect flop (Drabek), a struggling 38yo SP (who cost another extra top prospect) and a middle-of-the road prospect in Gose. Basically we've gotten three years of squat up until this point. Most likely 0-1 WAR without looking

He's worth as much as if not morre than Upton, Shields, Dickey, etc
