Nox Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 That can't be real. What the f***? It's a brave new world out there my friend. One I don't pretend to understand most of the time.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 man syndergaard is going to be a stud pitcher. f***ing hell. i told you all! And people were saying he'd just be a bullpen arm!
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 i told you all! And people were saying he'd just be a bullpen arm! How are you coping with the loss?

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 How are you coping with the loss? I taped a picture of AA to my dartboard. Plus, random bouts of crying, it's made for someone pretty awkward dates.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 ?? No they weren't. Uhhh, yeah, they did, if I cared enough, I could dig up some quotes of Keith Law and Kevin Goldstein saying in their writeups that scouts saw him as a potential/likely bullpen arm. People seem to criminally underrate his changeup and his new slider looked really good, especially in the new videos of him pitching for St. Lucie.

To be fair, he's still pitching in A-ball, long time until we see how that stuff matches up vs the top tier guys
Nox Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 To be fair, he's still pitching in A-ball, long time until we see how that stuff matches up vs the top tier guys There's also a very real chance he tears a labrun/rotator cuff/UCL and doesn't live up to current projections because of health alone.

You could say that about any prospect, and maybe this is willful ignorance, but I don't see why he's more likely to suffer a devastating injury than any other pitching prospect. His delivery doesn't seem too f***ed up.

crrr Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I'm not really trying to evaluate whether it was a good trade or not, I just think people around here over value the return on prospects, especially guys still IN A ball. As it stands right now, if Dickey were having a half decent season this would be looking pretty good

Just that he IS a pitching prospect and he has to dodge alot of health stuff in the next 5 years before he REALLY makes us all want to weep openly in public SirBJay style.
Nox Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 As it stands right now, if Dickey were having a half decent season this would be looking pretty good And if d'Arnaud didn't get hurt and came up with a league average bat with good defence it would be looking like an even more thorough disaster. Again, that line of thinking works both ways.

Although knowing this org's luck he'll probably never make a DL trip in his Mets career, which will last 20 years and involve 300 wins, 2000 Ks, and multiple dates wrecked from openly weeping, lol.

Ha. A fully developed, healthy Synd joining Harvey, Wheeler, Niese and 1 FA stud to form a juggernaut rotation is in play. God help us.

They don't even need an FA stud. It's very possible that all three of those guys could put up 4 WAR seasons simultaneously. And they have some solid guys like Domingo Tapia and Rafael Montero and Luis Mateo who could also form very nice pitchers. That's just horrifying.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 No; it was in his post-game interview. The Toronto Star had it. Unless you are saying The Star is the troll. Just want to clear this up. If you got this info off the old board it was a troll that made that thread and made up a quote from dickey saying it was from the star. if you cannot provide a link then it never happened.

Well, it seems like the only repeatable skill this org has is to have prospects turn to crap once they're traded. Fingers crossed!

AA needed to assess the Jays potential before shipping off two of our best prospects.

AA needed to assess the Jays potential before shipping off two of our best prospects. Unfortunately he did assess, but it was a terrible one, if he really wanted to trade our top 2 prospects away, they should've actually got someone younger and a better chance of staying with the org longer.

Without crunching the numbers, d'Arnaud+Syndergaard seems like more value than what they got for Halladay.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 A top 50 pitching prospect...? What portion of top 50 pitching prospects pitch 300 innings in the MLB? I don't know. A small portion. But the ones that do tend to be pretty f***ing good. The lottery ticket has value. d'Arnaud was the meat and potatoes of it anyway. Syndergaard was just a really nice looking side dish. He's grilled Zucchini.

An assessment before the season has started is just a guess.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Without crunching the numbers, d'Arnaud+Syndergaard seems like more value than what they got for Halladay. Value relative to the pitcher they gave up? Or just prospect value?
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Value relative to the pitcher they gave up? Or just prospect value? Just the value of the prospect package, in context. i.e. the Jays paid more for old man Dickey than the Phillies paid for a *basically* prime Halladay. I'm probably wrong though. I have no idea how highly regarded Taylor was.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Without crunching the numbers, d'Arnaud+Syndergaard seems like more value than what they got for Halladay. Drabek was the centrepiece and was ranked 25th place on Baseball America's prospect rankings.
