eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Continuing the discussion from the old forum... Gump now sitting with a .780 OPS/112 wRC+... On pace for just over 5 WAR Again, I pose the question, how can one player look so terrible but still be pretty awesome? The contact rate continues to normalize... rising to almost 60% (still worst in baseball by 5% behind Pedro Alvarez though...).. Walk rate is OK around 8%... Super high BABIP. TL;DR: almost never makes contact, when makes contact: destroys ball and almost everything falls in for a hit. Ready to commit medium/long-term yet? Gose has been showing a good eye in the minors but the numbers are pretty underwhelming. And go
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Enjoying it while it lasts, doubt Colby sustains these numbers. Anxiously anticipating the Gose era.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I'm hoping Rasmus has a huge year so AA can use him as a trade chip this upcoming offseason. We may not have a whole lot of wiggle room but with Gose waiting in the wings Rasmus could become a solid chip.
Metallijay Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Gump is the ultimate inigma, terrible and deadly at the plate all in the same at bat. lol. Never seen a guy with such an effortless swing yet such a massively flawed one.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Enjoying it while it lasts, doubt Colby sustains these numbers. Anxiously anticipating the Gose era. He goes on these power streaks where he hits like 6-7HR in a two week stretch... and it becomes so easy to get excited about him. Some of the easiest power I've ever seen. Last night.... taking a power LHP to deep right-center.... Made it look effortless.

If he can continue drawing a decent amount of walks.. then that's a different story... but that bat doesn't appear to be MLB ready.

Gose provides more value with his baserunning and defense than Rasmus does. I think many here don't realize how valuable Gose is, lol. If Rasmus reverts to 2011/2012 hitting, Gose is way more valuable.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 I think he's already a solid chip, he could have a career year if that K% lowered. Also, Cheers on seeing you here bro. Yeah, welcome to the board Matt. Welcome addition!

Prospects bust more often than not and then people are left scratching their heads at what happened. On the defensive end he should be stellar, offensively who knows. It's fine to take a chance on him in CF if we can get a good return for Rasmus for another position of need like 2B, but realistically, Gose is probably never going the be anything more than a bottom of the order bat, or a poor leadoff hitter.

But you're completely discounting the value he brings through defense, lol.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 But you're completely discounting the value he brings through defense, lol. No I am not, I specifically said "On the defensive end he should be stellar". I doubt the defensive upgrade on an already good defensive player is going to outweigh the offensive loss. Only time will tell, but I have a far better chance of being right that wrong. It's just the nature of prospects.
Caper Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I do like Colby... But it is painful when you have a runner on third 1 out and Colby comes up.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 never understand why so many think its either/or Rasmus/Gose Bautista soon will need to be moved to 1B and Cabrera has much lower range than we thought I'm in the Rasmus CF, Gose RF camp... Rasmus can shade towards LF to take advantage of Gose's range and make up for whatever chump is in LF

Not the best hitter but he brings a ton of value to his team. Gardener is a solid hitter. Career .353 OBP. If Gose can do that in the majors then sure he will be a stud with his level of D. Right now it looks doubtful. Gardener also had a .390 career OBP in the minors, Gose is nowhere near that. It's not just all D with Gardener.

Desmond Jennings put up 3.3 WAR with a .314 BA in 2012. Ben Revere put up 3.1 wins with an 88 wRC+. Shane Victorino puts up quite a bit of value with some OBPs under .300. If he can have a ~.300 OBP player he'll put up at least 2.5 WAR, I'd bet.

Gose will have value for this team, just not really sure how much. Probably won't be a game changer but he could still be a solid piece. I am not opposed to moving Rasmus at all if we can fix another problem on this team.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 We share the same views, then. Yup, just with differing values of players, but that's the fun part seeing how everything unfolds.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 He's cut down on the K's this year. Not really... he started off not striking out much but it's been climbing. 12 K's in his last 10 games.

bzapple Verified Member Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 It's almost like Rasmus' swing is too quick, if that makes any sense. His amazing bat speed allows to hit the ball incredibly hard when he actually makes contact, but he just commits on his swing so early which makes susceptible to literally any pitch with late movement on it. He's basically the polar opposite of a guy like Kawasaki who always keeps his hands back as long as possible in order to make contact.

That could be it, in addition to some horrible pitch selection, I guess those would go hand-in-hand.
sachmo55 Verified Member Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 When Rasmus has everything working, everything looks so easy If there's one player who I can't hold an objective opinion about, it's Rasmus, it just always feels like he's on the brink of turning the corner, and then he falls back. I'll forever be the sucker who holds onto the belief that he figures it out.
