Gump now sitting with a .780 OPS/112 wRC+... On pace for just over 5 WAR

 

Again, I pose the question, how can one player look so terrible but still be pretty awesome?

 

The contact rate continues to normalize... rising to almost 60% (still worst in baseball by 5% behind Pedro Alvarez though...).. Walk rate is OK around 8%... Super high BABIP.

 

TL;DR: almost never makes contact, when makes contact: destroys ball and almost everything falls in for a hit.

 

Ready to commit medium/long-term yet? Gose has been showing a good eye in the minors but the numbers are pretty underwhelming.

He goes on these power streaks where he hits like 6-7HR in a two week stretch... and it becomes so easy to get excited about him. Some of the easiest power I've ever seen.

 

Last night.... taking a power LHP to deep right-center.... Made it look effortless.

Not a huge fan of the "Gose-doesn't-need-to-hit-to-be-valuable" narrative. You gotta freaking hit man. If he can continue drawing a decent amount of walks.. then that's a different story... but that bat doesn't appear to be MLB ready.

Gose provides more value with his baserunning and defense than Rasmus does. I think many here don't realize how valuable Gose is, lol. If Rasmus reverts to 2011/2012 hitting, Gose is way more valuable.

Gose is not MLB proven and his minor league numbers do not suggest he is going to be anything special with the bat. Prospects bust more often than not and then people are left scratching their heads at what happened. On the defensive end he should be stellar, offensively who knows.

 

It's fine to take a chance on him in CF if we can get a good return for Rasmus for another position of need like 2B, but realistically, Gose is probably never going the be anything more than a bottom of the order bat, or a poor leadoff hitter.

Desmond Jennings put up 3.3 WAR with a .314 BA in 2012. Ben Revere put up 3.1 wins with an 88 wRC+. Shane Victorino puts up quite a bit of value with some OBPs under .300.

It's almost like Rasmus' swing is too quick, if that makes any sense. His amazing bat speed allows to hit the ball incredibly hard when he actually makes contact, but he just commits on his swing so early which makes susceptible to literally any pitch with late movement on it. He's basically the polar opposite of a guy like Kawasaki who always keeps his hands back as long as possible in order to make contact.

If there's one player who I can't hold an objective opinion about, it's Rasmus, it just always feels like he's on the brink of turning the corner, and then he falls back.

 

I'll forever be the sucker who holds onto the belief that he figures it out.
