Baseball America talking about Andy Burns:

Transfer Rule Allowed Andy Burns To Fall To Blue Jays

TORONTO—Andy Burns might have gone higher in the 2011 draft if he had played his junior year at Arizona.

Instead, he was ruled ineligible to play that year because he had transferred from Kentucky during the summer. Burns, though, had already attracted the attention of the Blue Jays at Kentucky and they made him their 11th-round pick.

So far the selection is looking good. The 22-year-old was batting .331/.418/.556 with four home runs and 20 RBIs after 33 games with high Class A Dunedin. He had 18 walks against 14 strikeouts.

He also was making the transition from shortstop to third base, where he has played most of his games.

Burns first attracted the attention of Blue Jays area scout Nate Murrie when he was playing with Kentucky. When Burns transferred to Arizona, Murrie passed on his finding to area scout Blake Crosby, who started to follow him.

The fact that Burns could not play competitively complicated things slightly but just the same Crosby was impressed.

“All he was able to do was to play in intrasquads before the season started,” Crosby said. “I went down there he kind of bounced all over the infield, he played some short, some second, some third. He used the whole field, a real loose athletic swing, had all the tools you look for.”

Although Crosby projected him as a third baseman, he feels that he can play other positions well.

“He’s the kind of guy who can play third base, but he can play shortstop, he can play second base and he’s so athletic that if you want him to he can play the outfield,” Crosby said. “Third base or second base are probably going to be his best spots. The good thing for Andy is that he’s not pigeon-holed in one spot.”

Come on AJ, you're our last hope of getting rid of JP.

Also the Canadian "Alex Rios" Michael Crouse is quietly having a solid start to the year for Dunedin while repeating high A. He's 22 years old.

I remember that last year there were more true prospects on Bluefield than there were on Vancouver. Looks like its gonna be the same way this year.

Prospect notes from BP's Thursday chat:

JJ (Work): Former Aggies pitcher John Stilson is pitching pretty well for Buffalo AAA. When is he likely to get the call to Toronto? There seem to be conflicting reports on what his best secondary pitch is, is it his split/change or curve and how would you grade them?

Jason Cole: Not certain on the when, but both his breaking ball and changeup can flash plus.

Kyle33 (Toronto): What do you think of Toronto prospect Andy Burns? He's putting up a pretty good stat line. Can you give us your scouting report on him?

Jason Cole: Solid prospect having a very nice season. Recently spoke to a scout about him, and he liked him. A strong guy who can show some power to all fields, and the glove plays well at third base. Might be more of a very good bench bat – has struggled with breaking balls a little.

I've been following Burns in A+ as well. No mentions of his speed in that assessment either. 20/28 in SB this year along with 47 RBI in 60 odd games.

I can tell that Brendan Kalfus is quickly going to grow into one of my favorite prospects.

His s***** spring probably means GCL.

It's not good news to me. I feared the worst when I heard them say it was a "minor" muscle problem on his shoulder. It'll be a month soon since he pitched so how minor can it be?

KLaw didn't seem worried about it but knowing this organization... I'm worried.

Osuna is legit. Damn. That 2.91 FIP will go down even further after tonight, giving him 3 straight levels (Blue Jays R 2012, Blue Jays A- 2012, Blue Jays A 2013) with a sub 3 FIP, and the kid is only 18.

I say promote him, he's ready.
