Anthony Alford rocketing up the prospect charts. He will start in AA next year and will be a sept call up. Yip.

Alford needs to show he can hit, though. He has an elite eye, though, and can end up as a regular in the MLB, but I want to see him hit in the low leagues before we move him up to tougher competition.

What? He has a .324 avrige and is hitting the ball well right now to go with his 22% walk rate

I don't care much about average.

His OPS is north of .900 but 0 homers. Is he hitting lots of gappers or is he just fast enough to stretch into extra bases?

Get him comfortable hitting in Lansing for a month or two and then move him to Dunedin. No rush for the guy.

Hard to tell that kind of thing without actually watching him play.

That's with a .465 BABIP, he's getting ridiculously lucky and combine that with the lack of homeruns, there are legitimate concerns that he's not making hard contact. The eye is elite and it can cover up a lot of flaws but he's gotta start driving the ball.

Obviously not a .465 mark but higher BABIPs in the lower minors are to be expected.

What if you did the opposite? What if you promoted him to Buffalo right now? Would it really make a difference?

You'd rush him. The competition in AAA isn't as good as, say AA. He'd probably do well in Buffalo but bring him up to the bigs and he'll get eaten alive.

I actually don't know the research on this but i would be surprised if minor league BABIP and its distribution is drastically different from the major leagues. Maybe a few points higher but even .400 should be an extreme BABIP.

Alford's BABIP is 20+ points higher than the next guy in the MWL, it would be 50+ points higher than the league leader in the SAL.

Alford's average would look extremely mediocre if he was BABIP'ing even .400 and couple that with the strikeouts its clear he has problems with making contact regardless of where his average is right now.

Maybe Alford is taking a lot of hittable pitches? Could be a reason for the low power, high OBP. Taking a lot of 2-0, 3-1 pitches in order to work the count? I'm obviously just guessing though.

Minor league average BABIPs are not wildly different from the majors (think .320 in A ball vs .300 in MLB), but it's what top prospects can do in those leagues. Top guys who can whack a ball and/or run routinely BABIP near .400.

The average BABIP of legit hitting prospects in the MWL is probably like, .350-.370 or something like that.

Fair enough, i can accept that BABIP's among top prospects will be in the range you describe. But you'd have to admit that there's a tremendous amount of luck going on with .465 , Alford's numbers(apart from the ridiculous walk rate) would look problematic even if he was BABIP'ing .400

wow at jumping him over Lansing. I wonder if the refinements he did in extended were that drastic

I read that he was held back in extended spring training due to a nagging back injury. It was on a sportsnet article a few weeks ago. Maybe this was the plan all along?

Lets just hope his fastball command is much improved

If a prospect doesnt have over .350 babip in the low minors I usually make an assumption they arent hitting the ball that hard

Problematic? He'd still be hitting very well, with an insane walk rate and an OBP over .400
