Pompey was interviewed this am on TheFan590 and probably there's a podcast of it on their website. I didn't hear it but I have assume they had to discussed why he hasn't been playing.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Any concern that Alford has 31 K's in 101 AB's? He's still a work in progress and the fact that he has the ability to get on base at a high clip this early in his developmental stage, should indicate he has the ability to cut down on his K rate going forward. Locastro is intriguing because he's only struck out 11 times in over 150 PA's so far.

Right, it looks like he has a decent eye so the K's could really drop at some point. We still have very little idea what type of player Alford will be. He could be a CF or a corner outfielder. He could be a light hitting speedster, or a high K power hitter. Could go in any direction.

Yeah, with his build, it really could veer off in any direction. I hope he turns into more of a line drive / high OBP type with great defence. I think he has enough tracking skills to make it as a CF in the MLB.

Strikeouts and Walks don't have a mutually exclusive relationship BTW, high walk guys by definition also tend to strikeout a lot. Part of it is you gotta get in deep counts to draw walks which also lead to strikeouts and part of it is guys who strikeout a lot sometimes tend to hit for power and in turn get walked a lot. That's what's so interesting about Alford, he's drawing an absurd amount of walks for a guy hitting for so little power.

Well he's also going up against young inexperienced pitchers so you have to factor that in. They're learning to finish hitters off and learning to repeat their deliveries consistently

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Nice to see Urena walking. Yeah. Thing is, I remember his walk rate being decent the previous 2 years. On the other hand, he's 19 in the MWL so he has time on his side.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Nice to see Urena walking. Walk is contagious
metafour Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Alford with a 4th walk and Urena tacks on a HR. Good day for the top hitters on that roster.

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Franklin Barreto made the MLB Pipeline weekly prospect team SS: Franklin Barreto, A's (No. 2 prospect) 7 G, .375/.429/.708, 6 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO The A's don't hesitate in challenging young hitters by sending them to advanced levels, so it wasn't a surprise the 19-year-old Barreto was pushed to the Class A Advanced Carolina League. He struggled initially, but has hit .314/.367/.500 this month, helped by this past week which started and ended with three-hit games. The first, last Monday, was a two-homer explosion for the shortstop.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 wow, 30 walks in 29 games for Alford. 23% non-intentional walk rate. .489 OBP. I'd love to hear a scouting report from someone who has seen him a few times. Is his batting eye this good? Looks like he might lead all of professional baseball in OBP right now (min 90 PA)

Looks like he might lead all of professional baseball in OBP right now (min 90 PA) I remember seeing someone earlier in the year say he is taking a lot of pitches (some of then strikes he should be swinging at) just to work the count. My guess is there is a little truth to that but you obviously don't know the whole story.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Are there any reports on SRF this season? He's still striking a ton of guys out but also walking nearly a batter per inning. Wondering if there is anything specific he is working on.
