Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 he is from Pardubice, I was there in 2008 for the WJ That must have been a great trip, did you go there for the hockey, or was it fortunate timing?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 I'm with JimmyC on this hard to compare, but in my lifetime I'd likely give the slight edge to Hasek as he was on the Sabres, that dude was outstanding, wasn't pretty, but he stole games and series outright on his own.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2024 Posted March 28, 2024 The fancy stats probably agree. But, the fancy stats also give Patrick Roy a huge boost. Upon further investigation Hasek and Roy are pretty close. Roy's peak was about as dominant as Hasek's peak, it's just harder to see because league-wide save% rose so much in the late 80s, early 90s. So Roy was dominating on a league-relative basis with a .912 sv%, while Hasek did it with .930s a half decade later. Roy lead the league in save% four times in five years, vs. Hasek's six straight. Kind of cool that Roy more or less passed the torch to Hasek as their peaks almost touch. But Roy also tacked dominant playoff performances on top of that. That matters a lot. I also love Ed Belfour showing up as the league sv% leader in both 91 and 2000. At ages 25 and 34. What's really interesting is that Hasek is actually 1 year older than Roy. I certainly acknowledge that the league wide SV% was much lower in the late 80's, when Roy was well ahead of the league - but that's when Hasek was still playing in Czech. As soon as Hasek became an NHL starter, he blew away Roy in the same era and then continued to play for another 4 seasons after Roy retired. Jacques Plante isn't someone I really knew a lot about (I don't follow the history of hockey like I do baseball). Crazy that his two 0.940+ SV% years were after the age of 40 after taking 3 years off hockey! Dryden is like the Sandy Koufax of baseball eh? Crazy he retired so early. Perhaps this isn't as cut and dry as I expected. Interesting debate gentlemen. Also worth noting that when I do go back and look at old stats, I can't help but be reminded of how good Orr was and how interesting it would have been if he stayed healthy for a 20 year career. Career over at age 26 is insane.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 That crowd last night in Buffalo was top shelf... hahaha! Woo... Sammy was incredible.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 Matthews eyeballing 70, that'd be cool as f***. FU Panthers!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 Matthews eyeballing 70, that'd be cool as f***. FU Panthers! Leafs gotta hope they can score 5-6 goals in the NHL Playoffs if they want to beat teams like Florida or Boston. Their defense man is awful.

Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Mo back in tonight so it might be a loss. They 8-0 without him?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Mo back in tonight so it might be a loss. They 8-0 without him? Please don't do that, he's our best D-man by a landslide.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Please don't do that, he's our best D-man by a landslide. I know but it’s a strange stat.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 I know but it’s a strange stat. Yes by', an anomaly.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Yes by', an anomaly. Not necessarily. When he's out the other D-Men are asked to step up...some of them have to provide the offence that Rielly normally does...other might tighten up a bit more knowing their #1 guy isn't around so they need to be better. That extra responsibility might bring the best out of them. It's just a theory...might be completely false, but it is plausible.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 Leafs need another two defensemen and they gotta hope guys like Matthews, Nylander and Marner play tough in the Playoffs.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2024 Posted April 3, 2024 BTW RIP to Boone Jenners little guy. Hard stuff.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 True but the D…….. not so much. Ah I've been saying that but Spanky is ignorant to that fact and thinks the Leafs are going all the way to the Cup!

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Kucherov likely wins MVP, I think.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Kucherov likely wins MVP, I think. It'll be MacKinnon and it really won't be that close
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 It'll be MacKinnon and it really won't be that close Nah, Kuch hasn't won yet and he's miles ahead in scoring on his team.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Wonder if Aaron Matthews has a shot if he somehow gets to 70 goals
