Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2023 Posted November 13, 2023 Minor hockey registration numbers have gone down a bit in recent years in my area. It is pretty damn expensive to play, gear up etc. My buddy, had 3 boys 6 years apart play top tier hockey, he had to take out a 2nd mortgage, lol to get through those years. His youngest still plays Jr. A, the one that played with Othmann, his eldest played with Mitchy Marner. It's definitely expensive.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2023 Posted November 13, 2023 Where's the nonsense you said that actual Canadians were upset, c'mon man, weak? The video I saw had multiple, multiple Canadians bent out of shape about it and slinging barbs in the comments. People had to tell them over and over it has nothing to do with Canada the country.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2023 Posted November 13, 2023 Minor hockey registration numbers have gone down a bit in recent years in my area. It is pretty damn expensive to play, gear up etc. Registration is down significantly in my area. All the small organizations are now struggling to offer rep and local league teams at each age group and you're seeing amalgamations throughout Ontario as a result. That approach is creating more AA/A centers that can offer 'better' hockey for local kids, but of course a lot of the population doesn't like that because it costs more and involves more travel. The AAA options in my area are terrible. Both centers (Highlanders and Predators) are 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours from my house. Barrie is closer (30-45 minutes), but we aren't located within their region.

I can get the confusion initially, but these are just ignorant mouthbreathers like connor that only read headlines in a comment session, your claim is lame.

They all play AAA baseball and single A hockey (youngest may play AAA). It is simultaneously amazing and terrifying all at the same time. We're lucky enough to be able to afford it, but it certainly puts a large strain on us. Then again, you see the life lessons the are gaining, the hard work, dedication, fun and long term friendships they are creating and that seems to justify it for us. I think we will have competed in a total of 36 tournaments in 2023 between the 3 boys in 2 sports.

Love to hear it buddy, that's something I find doesn't get brought up near enough about life lessons sport can create. Glad the boys are having a blast and that's great you guys can sustain the cost, they'll never forget it. I still cherish friendships through ball and hockey over all these years, it's great.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2023 Posted November 13, 2023 To some degree registrations are down because of the lingering effects of covid + kids would rather play fortnight. Sad but true Also the landscape is much more diverse. Other options of sports to play, different demographics than 20 years ago

Sad but true Also the landscape is much more diverse. Other options of sports to play, different demographics than 20 years ago It really is. One thing that's just come to light for me is how awful public school sports have become. When I was a kid, if you played on the school basketball and volleyball teams, you practiced 4-5 times a week, either before or after school. We had relatively good coaches, were taught how to play the game and played against good competition. Teams were rep teams, in that they only took the best 12 and players were cut. This circuit didn't really interfere with hockey or other winter sports and thus you could "do both". Now it's a bit of a joke. Practices are often held during recess a couple of days a week and while they still do cut kids, they don't cut them based on ability per say. Sometimes you get cut so someone else can "have a turn". Teams have 20 kids on them, so playing time is minimal and they don't even play by the rules (volleyball referees don't call lifts and teams were getting upset that one kid was spiking it?). So now, if you want to really learn and excel in those sports, you have to play for a local rep team and of course that directly competes with hockey and kids are forced to choose which sport they want to play.

You talking about high school sports? They are that watered down??? I don't remember ANY competitive school sports before high school.

I don't remember ANY competitive school sports before high school. I'm talking public school sports. You didn't have basketball and volleyball teams from Grade 4 through 8? My kids aren't quite yet in high school, but I do understand they are still competitive.

I think in middle school (7/8) there were a couple of teams, incl. mixed volleyball, but they didn't do that much. Just went to a tournament or whatever. Actual sports with practices began in high school.

Anyway - seems most/all schools in our area are now consistent with what you remember. Seems odd to start playing your first real games of Volleyball and Basketball in Grade 9.

I'm about 10 years younger than you I suppose. Grades 1-6 you are just introduced to different sports in gym class. And the odd "track day" or whatever while the weather is nice. Grade 7-8 same thing, with some small other opportunities. There may have been "clubs" for certain sports but these weren't like, competitive teams that played other schools. High school, actual sports begins. Lots of high school sports people have literally never played before grade 9. Volleyball I did and some people trying out didn't even know how to bump. Same applies even for some major sports like soccer and basketball - if the school is not big there will be kids who make the team who have never played the sport before. We had long poles in field lacrosse who had never touched a lacrosse stick before trying out. Almost nobody plays organized football or rugby before high school. There is ZERO emphasis on being competitive while kids are ages 4 through 13. It is almost discouraged. Very feminine, our schools. I'm not from SSM but I am not from the GTA either. Maybe it's different in different places.

I guess that's a good example of how the "new system" could still work just fine.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 The situation is bad beyond comprehension BUT when the video became mainstream the first reaction of a lot of people was that’s murder Reputation of being a dirty player Couple this with the family rightfully being pissed about the incident and probably putting pressure on authorities I don’t know. Maybe I’m just talking in circles but this will be interesting to follow. Impossible to prove intent but way it all unfolded looks extremely unnatural

Impossible to prove intent but way it all unfolded looks extremely unnatural You don't need intent to KILL for manslaughter to stick. It can just be intent to hurt or whatever. In Canada if this guy was charged like this, the Crown would probably need to prove something like.... intent to commit an ASSAULT. Which would probably mean intent to do some violent act that is outside of the common practices of the sport. Something like that.

I didn't want to watch it, but the charge forced me, here. There's definitely an extra kicking motion there. I can't honestly decide if it looks like he was hell bent on catching a piece on the way by (similar to when guys stick out there leg for a knee on knee hit, except he was airborn), or if it was the common human nature of kicking ones legs in reaction to suddenly have gone airborn. Then is that just the difference between voluntary or involuntary manslaughter? Not my area of expertise by any means
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Hmm.. interesting. Yeah I think in the US, it’s pretty well covered you can’t be charged in the normal act of a sport. So say a boxer dying, someone would need to hit him when the fight was over, he was down, etc.. seems like it would a tough case to try but the public pressure made it so there was no choice
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Heading into the Caps game. I better see some fights. No acts of manslaughter though.

Have to have the alcohol to kill the bacteria though.

What I meant was that it’s difficult or even impossible to improve the insult to injure outside the nature of the sport. Even though watching it some see it as pretty clear
