They are a bit uncomfortable. At least, the old versions are. We used to tape them up to make them thinner in minor hockey. They probably aren't made the same anymore, though.

 

I think most of it is just not wanting to look like a dork.

 

Visors came a long way when they stated making them tinted and s*** and young superstars like Ovechkin were wearing them.

NHL - "guys, I think it's time we make neck guards mandatory. We've had several severe scares over the years and now a player has died from a skate slicing a neck. Player safety must be paramount and I mean, all players wear them in minor hockey already"

NHLPA - "f*** that Gary, nobody wants to look like a dweeb out there. We have to maintain the status symbol of being the toughest athletes on earth"

NHL - "um, you're already behind MMA in terms of toughest athletes"

NHLPA - "we are? f***"

NHL - "you know, players wouldn't have to be tough and return after losing teeth or getting stitches to the face if they just, you know, wore cages like they do all throughout their minor league careers"

NHL - "you morons really do get hit in the head too much"

It might take some new tech that is more comfortable, though

 

This is what will happen. PA won’t vote for it, but you’ll see guys start wearing them I’m sure. That s*** hits close to home

 

I’d imagine junior leagues will mandate them and you’ll begin to have guys enter the league each year who are already wearing them

People are typically resistant to authority by nature. Everyone knows the risks, everyone is free to use them if they wish. Is it really that big of a deal if someone decides not to wear one because they hate how it looks or feels?

 

I know you’re being sarcastic but it will never be mandatory until the players decide it to be. Best course of action right now is to educate and continue to improve the product

Leafs played sloppy last night. Every time they tied up the game, Buffalo scored like a minute or two later. Unbelievable. Don't understand how some Leafs fans paid like over $400-500 for a pair of Green's last night haha.

 

It's going to be Deja Vu all over again. Once the Playoffs role around, Leafs will have an early round exit in R1 or R2.

 

Sucks they can't put together a legit Stanley Cup contender with guys like Matthew, Marner, Nylander etc.
