  1. Not very much, they had a combined 170ABs out of a rough total of 2,750 for the team in the second half. That's about 6% of the ABs... so they had a positive impact but not a big one. The team as a whole clearly hit better in RISP across the lineup in the second half. I personally remain in the camp of mostly random variance/luck impacting RISP (which is by definition a much smaller sample than the season overall hitting averages). That said, I still think the Jays hitting strategy/approach in 2023 needs improvement.
  2. Totally agree with the first part.
  3. Why focus on the positives when you can s*** on Atkins! The team is in a pretty good position and Atkins is out there adjusting his glasses and kicking tires looking for his usual FA bargains.
  4. True, but at the same time, how does he rank amongst 3B with a .750 ops? Middle of the pack? This is his age 31 season, I wouldn't count on that glove being elite or a sudden offensive resurgence. That said, wouldn't be surprised if he does get $150M in such a sad free agent class.
  5. Oh heeeeell no. If anyone meets that price tag they're going to have some serious buyer's regret.
  6. I picture gruber92 as actually being the real Kelly Gruber. It's possible right?
  7. Yeah man, I thought Lantigua was an island in the Caribbean.
  8. I concur. I wonder what the cost would be.
  9. Yup, it is baseball and it's definitely possible... I just wouldn't bet on it and I'd prefer to see if Spencer Horwitz (who's turning 26 next week) can be a .800 ops controllable young bat for the Jays. I think there are better odds of Spencer doing that than Joey Votto going +15 - 20% over league average, not to mention it is way, way more valuable for the team. All that said, I'd still be a bit of a homer if the Jays sign Joey Votto. I've been a fan for a long time and it would be wild to see him in a Jays jersey.
  10. In 2022 he was below league average with the bat, so not sure how the worse case is league average. This is a player on a steep decline from a legendary career. Reminds me somewhat of Jose Bautista in 2017 where a bunch of people were trying to convince themselves that father time hadn't cooked him at age 37. Joey is 40 years old. If you're signing him, I would hope he's rarely off the bench and there is some stats nerd that's going to convince me he can be sheltered enough to come close to a league avg bat. To be honest, I'd rather give the ABs to guys like Spencer Horwitz.
  11. Not too much to get excited about there. They have Teoscar at 80/4, which seems high to me... I would guess he'd be looking at a 2 or 3 year deal between $15-20 aav, but maybe I'm out to lunch.
  12. I've read a few things on Jung Hoo Lee, sorry can't dig up the links. In summary, I think the general consensus is that he may not be good enough in the field to stick in CF and doesn't have enough pop to be a prototypical corner outfielder. Seems to be a elite contact, slap hitter type who is still young. Based on what I've read, it sounds to me that his upside is as a Frank Catalanotto type hitter. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know. I'm not sure what to think about a gamble on a successful MLB transition - I think I'd lean towards a soon to be 32 yo Jorge Soler at 45/3. Soler offers more pop and IMO higher predictability of outcome despite his up and down career. Wishful thinking, but you could also add both and have Jorge in a primary DH spot unless Jung Hoo Lee shits the bed.
  13. You have inspired me - if they sign Ohtani I'm breaking open my Bowmore 1989 23yr for a f***ing taste of victory
  14. Yup, exactly. This is madness - Manoah, Kikuchi, and Tiedemann for the privilege to pay Soto $450M? If you'd do that, go balls to the wall on Ohtani this year, or take a shot at a big free agent signing next year. I tend to agree with Max Silver that the team underperformed it's talent level this year and could make up a lot of WAR with the same core supplemented by a couple above average bats.
  15. Yup, he was garbage.
  16. eh... not sure how much magic is left in that bat. He had a hell of a career, but there would be a lot of unsold jerseys by year-end.
  17. That's a rough story. Even in the 90s when I was in Univ it was still about putting as much as you can on the bar and f*** form, get it up. Have quite a few friends still dealing with shoulder injuries from bench, knee or back injuries from deadlifts/squats, etc. I'm still putting in a lot of work in the gym now in my 40s, but it's all volume/strict form, bands, and mobility work. I'm sure today's exercise science for athletes focuses more about time under tension and reducing pressure on joints and reducing risk of injury, but I do think there are some convoluted exercises being pushed that are really inefficient at working the target muscles by including too much stabilizing/core. Spring training is going to be telling, I really hope these guys show up with some fire in their eyes after putting in the work over the off-season.
  18. Yeah.... this. I was really impressed with the plyometrics box jump, but some of the workout routine looks like inefficent alternatives that just look 'cool'. Not a huge fan of the routine, BUT, it does look like he has lost a bit of weight, and at least he's in the gym. I'm hoping, to Laika's point, that the family directed routine will switch to the Jays professional trainers later in the off-season. Then on the flip side, I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have been provided some programs/direction from the Jays and he basically decided that he is going to go it 'his way'. Nothing wrong with sumo deads tho. Not sure what to think, but still hopeful he is getting his diet together as that will probably have the most impact on his physical fitness (assuming he at least is in the gym moving).
  19. I can just imagine what these guys look like that are giving 4.5s to baseball player's wives. lmao
  20. Yup, they'll push the fences out the moment they have all those cheap extensions in place. Evil genius.
  21. I was upset for about 48 hours, but I always expected Atkins to get at least one more year. Now I'm looking forward to the offseason to see what sort of near-desperate maneuvering this team can do to improve the squad and right the ship. Go Jays!
  22. That's how she writes too, it's painful.
