  1. Chapman reportedly turned down a contract extension of six years and $125 million from the Jays in order to bet on himself this year: "If I was going to do something long-term, I was going to get the value I’m worth.".... Way to go Chappy, betting on yourself. If all goes reasonably well in San Fran and Oracle Park, maybe you'll land a contract offer of 5 years and $100 million next year at age 31. f*** Rogers Centre. This offseason is making perfect sense.
  2. I hope you're right. If IKR has a 2+ WAR season I'll have a glass of Lagavulin to toast both of you.
  3. Yup, plus only one year guaranteed. People keep saying it doesn't matter, but when you're working right near the cap of a budget, $5M and $7.5M next year does have an impact on what level of player you can chase/sign with remaining funds. Let's hope IKF has a career year and we all eat our words...
  4. Same here! Born and raised in Toronto, spent a couple decades in Van, and just moved out to Calgary two years ago.
  5. Ditto, except I would flip the Yankees and the Orioles.
  6. Yeah, that's possible, but I don't think its the most likely outcome for this year. I still can't wrap my head around the direction Atkins went this offseason, but a below average offense would be a surprise. There's a lot of ugly looking lineups out there man and the Jays had a 107 WRC+ last year (tied for 7th in the league).
  7. Yup. Going to be painful at the plate. Front office shouldn't have rushed the IKF signing, it makes no sense unless Chapman was clear he wasn't interested in coming back. It's a very small consolation, but it's funny to see Boras foolishly overplay his hand.

That guy was so fking clutch - and he'd take it up another gear in the playoffs. I was living in Vancouver during his prime and remember him burying the Canucks so many times.
  9. Yup, I'm aware. I'm suggesting bringing that number down further for pitchers.
  10. Enjoyed the rant. Lowering the maximum pitchers from 13 to 12 will have an impact, but if MLB really wants starters going deeper they should also reduce how many times per season a pitcher can be optioned before they hit the waiver. Apologies if someone has already suggested this and I missed it. Even with 12 pitchers, teams will be monkeying around and shuttling guys up and down to manage innings.
  11. Yup. It’s quite possible Francis shows himself a capable backend starter - this would be a great outcome for the next few years of budget management. If Tiedemann looks good early on, I really think the team should be using his bullets in the MLB sooner rather than later, understanding workload is going to be carefully managed/limited. Midseason makes sense, but if he’s showing out, earlier is better.
  12. Of all the starters, I thought they could have given Kikuchi a bit more length at certain times last year. Turns out he was slightly above league average in outs per start.
  13. It’s the first spring training start, there’s still plenty of time for Manoah to show some command and some consistent mechanics. Anyone remember the panic over Berrios’ first start at the WBC around this time last year? I think his line was 6 runs over 1IP and he was thereby declared cooked. Besides, if Manoah doesn’t pull it together and turns into the next Ricky R., Ricky T. will be there to save us.
  14. "Big league starters averaged 15.4 outs and 85.1 pitches last year, according to Sportradar, and 15.6 outs and 84.9 pitches in 2022. But the numbers were 17.4 and 93.1 as late as 2015, and 17.8 and 98.6 in 2000." Wow, I knew teams were much more cautious on how many times batters see their starters, but I'm surprised the average is now down to 85 pitches. Basically a guy who can effectively pitch six innings on average (without the yank) is now a stud, whereas that was just an average outcome in 2015. I wonder how they factor in openers / bullpen days, because clearly those are much more common than in yesteryears.
  15. This was my take-away. Not only do they have a player at almost every position, they have one of the top players at almost every position. Cue sad music.
  16. Oh, I thought you had to go to University to learn Celsius.

Yeah man. That season was insane, but then when you add the story and the comeback from Hodgkins.... to me it's the greatest NHL season of all time.
  18. I doubt they would have offered Chapman a $100M deal with that sort of internal projection (I know it's just a hypothetical), but I think you're right in that the Jays FO probably believe they have more positional flexibility (CF/IF) and will have more payroll flexibility (2025/2026) when it can have more impact on the roster. They probably see WAR as roughly a wash or greater than the alternatives when duration of contract is considered (Chapman). I really disliked the IKF signing at the time and in hindsight definitely seems the Jays overpaid in AV and length, but I'm not so sure some of these bargain bin signings like Urshela are making me lose sleep as IKF seems more projectable at a higher WAR. It's just that extra year that burns, as I'd like the Jays to have as much cash as possible next off-season - the potential FA crop is mouthwatering compared to this years.
  19. Exactly. This contract has the upside of $30m for one great season vs the downside of $80m over 3 if he struggles. Both seem like very possible outcomes. There is no way Boras doesn’t take him back to the market if he rakes this year. This sort of pillow contract puts less risk on the team over the duration of a long term deal but takes almost all the possible upside to the team off of the table. I’m glad the Jays didn’t do this one.
  20. "This is how I sell the US to the Moroccan chicks" and "I've been to those European countries and it's all the same s***." This is a man of culture.
  21. Yup. Tremendous ceiling? Sounds like something Ross Atkins would say. At this point I’d be pleasantly surprised if he can stick with the team in the bullpen. I suppose his ultimate ceiling may still be as a high leverage reliever, but I wouldn’t call that “tremendous”.
