That's a rough story. Even in the 90s when I was in Univ it was still about putting as much as you can on the bar and f*** form, get it up. Have quite a few friends still dealing with shoulder injuries from bench, knee or back injuries from deadlifts/squats, etc. I'm still putting in a lot of work in the gym now in my 40s, but it's all volume/strict form, bands, and mobility work. I'm sure today's exercise science for athletes focuses more about time under tension and reducing pressure on joints and reducing risk of injury, but I do think there are some convoluted exercises being pushed that are really inefficient at working the target muscles by including too much stabilizing/core.
Spring training is going to be telling, I really hope these guys show up with some fire in their eyes after putting in the work over the off-season.
