  1. Bellinger has played some 1B, I'm sure he'd do fine there as a backup option. 3B... naw bro.
  2. Yeah exactly - if it's true, this is absurd money for someone who hasn't thrown an inning in the majors. I never thought he'd get to Gerrit Cole territory. That Gausman contract is looking mighty fine right now.
  3. Yeah, the wear and tear and the injuries the last few years make it tough - there's so much downside here in his age 32 season. But at the same time, he's Mike f***in Trout and it wouldn't surprise me if he puts up a 6-7 WAR MVP season this season. It would be tempting as hell, but you'd probably regret it.
  4. Hell yeah. He's an upgrade on Belt and you don't have to hide him from lefties. Instant oomph to the lineup at a comparatively reasonable cost and we have DH open. Looks like $40M over 2 years is the consensus take?
  5. What did you have for breakfast
  6. The structure is first and foremost about luxury cap evasion. Is this a 'true' $700M contract? Obviously not. We don't know the terms of the escrow, but it's quite possible this is more equivalent to a US$500M - $550M contract if they're paying $2M and putting $48M in escrow. It's also not clear who would get the interest on an escrow account - some seem to assume the Dodgers will, but we don't know. Did the Dodgers pay less than the Jays were probably offering? I don't think it's unreasonable to assume so. But is this 'free' money to the Dodgers like some are claiming? Definitely not.
  7. That sounds about right. People are assuming this is free money up-front for the Dodgers, but if you're Ohtani you take zero chances on non-payment, as unlikely a scenario as that may be. You want your money sitting and waiting for you in a protected account. Sadly, this structure is all about luxury cap evasion. It's ********!
  8. I also see this as the best route for FA (I'm on the fence on Jung-Hoo Lee, but everything else makes perfect sense). Keep working trades hard, but don't make any panic moves.
  9. It's a wall of something, but 'text' isn't what comes to mind.
  10. I'm glad we took a shot too. If anything, it shows that there is a commitment to spending and Rogers sees the benefit of eyes on the team. I really, really wanted Ohtani, but $700m? That has serious potential to be an enormous albatross contract in three or four years.
  11. Exactly. This is going to be heavily exploited by the teams with money to burn and defeats the spirit of the rules. The luxury cap is ******** anyways, there should be a hard cap, both max and min.
  12. There has been some fair criticism of the Jay's (lack of) production of higher end prospects, but I do think the development system will show better in the next few years. Most of the industry feedback has been that the Jays are working well with what they've got in the minors, but the signing/drafting for tools has been somewhat subpar.
  13. Based on where this off-season is going, we're going to have to hope that our heavyset guys show us something and arrive in better shape and better prepared for the season. Atkins can pick around the peripheries and add DH/LF bats, but we'll need a big rebound from two of Manoah/Kirk/Vladdy. Of the three, I'm not even sure who I would bet on. I suspect at least one will have a big rebound.
  14. Yup. I haven’t felt this emotionally vulnerable in years.
  15. Yeah, exactly... might be, might be. Tiedmann is more highly regarded (industry consensus) right now than Thorpe and should have more trade value. However it's possible the Padres rate Thorpe much higher than other orgs. Both guys have high ceilings and huge uncertainties on whether they'll be successful in the bigs, but it does show that the cost will be high for a one year rental who is looking for an insane long-term contract.
  16. He'll still be one hell of an outfielder, but you're asking some pretty valid questions - there's a whole lot of risk for whichever team ends up signing him.
  17. Oh ok, fair enough.
  18. No, $20-$30K is pretty typical for the strong private schools in Canada.
  19. Yeah, I don’t think we really disagree on Atkins. You’re right that Ray was initially a trade acquisition, but the Jays signed him as a FA after his short initial stint with the Jays. While I’m not overly enamoured with Atkins, I think people have to be more objective when assessing his body of work.
  20. I think Atkins has done quite well in free agency. Ignoring the big money Gausman, Ryu, Springer deals, he's killed it on the short-term deals. Robbie Ray and Semien were absolutely scintillating value. KK and Brandon Belt provided good value, hell, even Kikuchi might provide excess value. On top of that, what about the deals he hasn't made, including a big money extension on Vlad which the team wisely avoided until a longer track record was established. He also avoided an albatross deal with Jose Bautista (I love you Jose), which a lot of fans and people on this forum were calling for. He's made some good trades, and he's made some questionable ones, but that's always going to be the case, especially when you're dealing with volatile prospects.
