Some guys I haven't thought much about before on absolute heaters to start. Sean Keys, 6 HRs, 200wrc+, still 22 in double A. I know its doubtful he plays third so he is a tough fit, but encouraging. Ditto on Bohrofen with 6 homers but 24 in double A. Not sure if he can actually project in cf Cunningham, Williams and Toman all white hot as well in vancouver.

There is no way that berrios would intentionally lose alot of money to start, even just from the perspective of pissing off the union and other players.
  3. jmomcc
There still is an ideal time to sell though where you might eat less money than other times.

If you are going to trade berrios it needs to be before july 30th i think. After that he has 10-5 rights and a full no trade clause. I think if he is healthy you do that as soon as possible while teams need pitching. I just don't know if a 18 million (24 million next year) long relief is worth it.

The reason to trade him and/or lauer is whether they are the best option for the pen or not. Is Miles better in one inning relief? Is fisher sitting in triple a because berrios needs accomodated even though he hates the pen? There is a possible opportunity cost.

he was apparently really proud of never going on the IL so its possible that he's had smaller versions of this other years. You could look at this two ways. He's hurt. Or, finally he is actually taking some time and getting fully healthy.

Realistic.. the padres traded a really good prospect for him. They aren't trading him for less than someone like yesavage.. which i would not do personally.

I think i used terminology wrong. The back end is the good end? I meant the other way around. I like our 4 best relievers. i think if you could get Varland's fastball location up instead of middle, then he could be our closer honestly. I'm not sure how that would be achieved. its just such an obvious problem though and the reason i think he strikes out less than he should. Its too easy to sit on locations with him because everything is middle or down. If he could throw 98 up and knuckle curves down, he would be absolutely nasty. My problem is with the bottom 4. I think lauer and berrios are redundant. And then little is a worry as our best leftie. I think they will trade berrios or lauer and one of miles and bastardo will make it though. Then maybe tieddemann can be an impact leftie. Fisher will be the glue guy.

Yea, fair. I guess i just don't like the composition of it once you get to the back end of the pen.

I'd agree with the fangraphs rankings currently. We are 8th albeit with Berrios not in the pen. I do think him or lauer need traded. If we are done signing guys, i'd guess we'd end somewhere around 10th best.

I'm not that impressed by that pen. I don't think stashing starter depth in the pen is actually a good idea unless their stuff really plays up. I'm not sure that's true for berrios or lauer.

If we don't get either, i'd pivot to okamoto and imai. Then make some trades to clean it up and start out like that.
  13. jmomcc
I was listening to a podcast with a BA guy on and he said Okamoto is a 55 (above average) at third and a 70 at first (possibly one of the best in baseball). Other people seem lighter on him. Saw a max muncy comparison somewhere and he's more a 45 at third than a 55 i think. I just can't see us risking it with Murakami.
  14. jmomcc
The problem with him isn't so much the problem with velo. Its that pretty much everyone thinks he will either not play third at even a fringe average level, and we can't sign another first baseman on big money.
  15. jmomcc
I'd choose bo. i also think there won't be a cap but they will make the luxury tax so heavy that no one including the dodgers will go more than 20/30 million over it and not for multiple seasons. You can look at that two ways. Grandfather in the spend or don't go crazy.
  16. jmomcc
    No, 41 according to fangraphs.

There is a natural trade for berrios where the money could be manageable but it would require frontloading. Berrios to San Diego for deep cut prospects (preller is a good scout, there will be teenagers in the system that are interesting). They are desperate for pitching. They have two real starters essentially and they have like i think 30 million to spend. Give them Berrios, and 15m to all of his salary this year, and get some prospects. I think that is reasonable. They get a free or almost free pitcher who can eat innings which they really really need. I agree that Lauer is an obvious trade candidate. It we did get tucker, i'd also consider dealing varsho as an extension would be unlikely at that point. I also think they might trade heineman and schneider next year, but probably not this year. Edit: i do think berrios will move. He loves routine and has essentially never pitched out of the pen. If not him lauer.
  18. jmomcc
So, they have to dfa someone to accomodate rogers. Any predictions?
  19. jmomcc
I'd say the main problem with paying for defense is mainly - defense is more improvable by coaching and positioning, so less valuable - it regresses more quickly than hitting. You can maintain hitting value longer than defense so its more available in free agency as players are 29-31 So,'its generally something you need to develop yourself in house. But we did trade for him young enough that he shouldn't regress much. So, as a big market team its fine. He would not be fine for someone like tampa or cleveland though. The only guys they can pay are guys who rake and have defensive value. So, finding a trade for him would be tough. I'd rather keep him.
  20. jmomcc
I would trade berrios and lauer and sign max to that contract happily. Also, Gimenez is actually younger than i thought. For some reason i thought he was like 29. Yea that contract is fine as he shouldn't regress too much defensively by the time it finishes.

Bullpen is interesting. No options - Hoffman - Garcia - Rogers - Berrios - Lauer - Nance - Bruhl Options - Varland - Little - Fluharty - Fisher - Lee - Schultz Rule 5 - have to be on 26 man - Bastardo - Miles Not on 40 but getting paid - Yariel Feels like there almost has to be trades. Bruhl actually had pretty good underlying numbers last year, so he might be a harder cut than you'd think as well.
  22. jmomcc
Fair but isn't that a good combo compared to little. He can throw the sinker for strikes which allows the curve to play. If little could throw the sinker for strikes then guys couldn't lay off the knuckle curve. Although he couldn't really throw either in the end.
  23. jmomcc
Yea Keller and Rogers are to me sneaky elite additions.
  24. jmomcc
His sinker and curve are both good pitches in my opinion and he has better command.
  25. jmomcc
I love the idea of newcomb. He would be our best leftie immediately and can start as well. I think a team like san diego might just sign him as a cheap starter though.
