The only problem with that is you sign tucker and bo, and aim to reduce payroll naturally next year. Who is playing centre field? You then need to go sign a free agent next year there or extend varsho. I wouldn't put barger in the same category as he is cost controlled for a long time. He is a guy i'd be extremely reluctant to trade unless i was blown away. Berrios, Santander and Rodriquez aren't really assets currently. I can see why you'd trade Berrios as he will have 10-5 rights and a full no trade in july. But i don't see why we'd trade the other two. We aren't getting anything back and they are useful to some extent. Why not give them a chance to have a big year and then trade them? If Santander hits 40 bombs this year, you could probably trade that deal, or just have a DH. The players that might get you something back, and who we might not need need this season are guys like varsho, schneider, lukes and lauer. I'd personally lean varsho and lauer as they have a single year of control. I'd be willing to trade schneider but maybe more reticent on lukes.

Also in the vein of kind of out there possibly dumb ideas. Let's say you sign bo and tucker. At that point you have such a loaded line up you could play Straw in centre field just for defense. Or Lukes if you think the defense is good enough. Then... you trade Varsho to Philly. They need a CF and Dumbroski is one of the few remaining gms willing to overpay right now in prospects. edit: just generally if i could add in free agency hard and then improve the farm via trades then we would be really set up next offseason to either hope some guys progress to the majors and be real contributers for cheap, or we have the ammo to swing trades next year for cost controlled guys, and mostly stay out of free agency.

If they wanted to go all out dumping money on this year but keeping money off the books next year, could they trade berrios and pay say 23m of his remaining salary, but frontload it. So, take all 18m, this year and then 2.5 the next two years, Essentially a team gets him for 3/43 but pay nothing this year. I feel like maybe someone like san diego who really need cheap pitching this year would jump at that.

It was bastardo. I think this guy will go above our pick, he was mentioned in the ba pod as the slam dunk rule 5 guy to be selected. I would be surprised if we lost Pinango or Arias but Rojas seems possible.

Ashby would be a great get but barger represents upside. Like if the adjustment he made is real, he has the power and defensive ability to be like 3/4/5 win player possibly. Its not a high chance but its a chance.

I personally would just keep santander but if we ate some portion of the deferred money, his contract is easily tradeable imo.

I would guess bastardo is relief. Estrada is very tradeable/cuttable.

Maybe i'm crazy but i think some team would just take straw for his defense. He's essentially only 6.4 million for one year. Cleveland pay a million on top of that and they pay his buyout next year.

He doesn't have options i think. So, you'd need to dfa him. If he has options i'd keep him for sure.

If i was arizona i'd want barger, nimmala and a couple of pitching prospects. To start. Marte is a literal star player on a great deal.

Yea people are not really realizing that Marte projects to be as good as vlad next year.

Just looking at marte's contract, there is a LOT of surplus value. So you'd need to pay most of berrios' contract to just add our two best prospects not named yesavage.

I think i'd keep tieddeman. He won't have the innings to start this year but he could be the leverage lefty reliever we need.

I really don't think any front office would see hIm as anything other than a 5th starter on a bad team. Yes, that's not fair but i think its accurate. we also just have too relievers without options. also, if you want to be a big payroll team and have a good farm.. this is kind of how you do it. You sign someone in fa, and then trade the depth below.

Could we get an optionable reliever with good stuff and some deep cut prospects for Lauer? He could be a 5th starter on a bad team. i'd be happy to unload rodrquez but i'd keep berrios.

I'm not comfortable paying a reliever what diaz wants honestly. I'd be willing to overpay ponce a bit. Just like, we probably need him as a 6th starter at some point, and then if he isn't a playoff starter he could be dynamite in the pen.

Of all those i'd sign Ponce selling him on swingman to start. And then rogers seems like great value.

I think you need to just decide on a contract extension prediction source and then have opinions based on that. Because the contract terms matter obviously. anyway, mlb trade rumours have saurez 3/48 and keller at 3/36 - Diaz is 4/82 - Ponce is 2/22 - Finnegan 2/20 - Weaver 2/18 - Rogers 2/18 - Seranthony 2/18 - Fairbanks 2/18 - G Soto 2/16 - Pagan 2/16 - Nick Martinez 2/25 They have been pretty close so far. Cease was 7/189 which with deferrals is essentially spot on . Helsey was 2/24 so a little low. Williams was 4/68 which i think is a bit lower than he got aav wise. iglesias was 2/26 so 1/16 looks close if you factor in extra for a one year deal.
