Just listening to rates and barrells. They were saying that Cease was specifically trying to learn Gausman's splitter from afar and had even thrown it in games this year. Also mentioned that we have the second most splitters of any farm system. If he could learn a splitter even just to throw to lefties...

Luzardo is going to have an insane market if he has a full healthy year. He'll he 29 going into free agency as well.

This version of Arenado is quite a jays type hitter as well. Could they get less chase and more bat speed out of him?

Yea, i think i agree with sliderguy in that we aren't the kind of org that changes pitches that much. But even his existing sinker and curve used a bit more and sequenced better could help.

He has thrown 7 different pitches in the last 2 years but the other 5 he throws very little other than the curve. That is used more against lefties than righties. He did mess with his mix a bit this year increasing the curve to lefites and decreasing it to righties. In terms of stuff plus and location plus the others are (in small to very small samples) excluding the sweeper that isn't on there. Sinker 95/90 Cutter 108/81 (all 2004) Change 109/110 Curve 92/102 The one that stands out to me is the change. He reduced how often he threw is in 2025 though. It is quite a soft pitch though almost 20mph softer than the fastball. There is something there that could be figured out you'd think.

I think on an org wide level you could almost do both. So, essentially your minor league pitching development concentrates on pitch design and then we draft projectable guys to give pitches to. Then when they get to the majors they focus on pitch mix and so on.

Its just a numbers game with the dodgers and they develop a ton of WAR in controllable years through the draft. They also do this thing where they develop a 2/3 win player and then just trade him and sign someone in free agency instead, get a few guys years away from the rule 5 and then THEY become good prospects. Its a really smart way to use their money. I think the jays problems in the minors with injuries was more that there wasn't the volume of prospects to overcome it. We have the payroll to be the dodgers but we don't have the synergy between drafting and dev maybe. The dodgers seem really keyed in on what they can and can't develop. Your point on Walker above is interesting. One of the first 'bad' signs that we might not be about to become a cutting edge pitching org was him staying as pitching coach. Not that he is a bad coach, he's really good. But more that you'd expect people coming in with a really defined pitching philosophy to pick their own guy.

Yea if he showed some kind of change that produced three wins, His durability, i think he gets it. Maybe 4/75

If he has 3 war, he opts out i think. He could get something like 4/80.

The fact that he hasn't done it yet might just mean he's not comfortable doing it which is fine, but i feel like obviously you want to get him down from 80% two pitches. The curve and the changeup look like pretty good pitches. He has them already. Its unfortunate he couldn't throw the cutter reliably to where he wanted to. It graded really well stuff wise. Ideally for me he would have an average 2 seam that he could throw for strikes. Just feels like there is a guy with 5+ war seasons in him with a better mix.

Yea you would think adding just two slightly below average pitches and sequencing them would make him even better.

I think the argument against this, and reading between the lines of fangraphs and keith law review of the trade,. they believe that Cease will almost always underplay his peripherals. That he's a guy that fip overrates consistently. So, for them Fried is a better pitcher.

Yesavage, Manoah and Fluharty in ten years of the draft is not that great. Or even good. However, yea the free agency signings have been truly excellent. That Gausman deal might be one of the best ever. We aren't really a team that changes pitchers alot imo unless they are really broken but it will be interesting to see what they do with Cease.

If we did somehow trade berrios.. i'd like to get Ponce. He has tons of velo and should strike guys out. Could be in the pen for playoffs.

The thing about Cease as well, he seems like he has a decently high floor. But could you get to more ceiling by just getting his fastball down to around 33%, his slider down to 33%, and helping him get comfortable with his other pitches to fill the rest. That could solve some of his home run problems on its own.

The best case scenario with Berrios is that he - 1. Sees this next year as a contract year - 2. Gets back a tick of velo, maybe he was playing hurt - 3. Takes the playoff snub as motivation to go to driveline or just to our pitching lab and work on his shapes. He's really not that old. If he threw up a 3 win year next year with better stuff, he could opt out and get less per year but a 4 year deal for a bigger amount. .

I'd be ok missing on Tucker. Give me Bo on the smaller deal. Cease seems like a good deal to me. He's projected for 4 wins. Let's say he starts with that and regresses by half a win a year. That would leave you like $20 m short. That's fine and reasonable considering how durable he is.

Before he got injured fangraphs had him as a high probability back end starter who would debut last summer. I'd be really happy if two of yesavage, ricky and stanifer became starters long term. They all have some reliever risk.

If i was them i would because there is no point in having payroll at all right now. I just want draft picks and leave roster spots open to try to find guys.

Their long term plan should be too be bad for at least the next three years and draft well. And figure out what succeeds in their park.

How about this for a crazy idea. Assuming bo goes elsewhere. We trade - Berrios to the rockies for - Bryant - Tovar - prospects Bryant is completely dead money. He is probably going to have like 50 PAs per season as he seems to have a chronic back injury. He should retire but he won't without getting probably all that money. The rockies are rebuilding anyway, this gives them a completely free cap, and berrios putting up 1.5 wins a year is fine there. Yes it would put us even more up in the tax but who cares.
