The $50M owed has to be contingent on Arenado not opting out, otherwise it’s an all time bad deal for the Rockies.
I mean, it’s still pretty bad regardless, but it’d be slightly less bad.
Realistically, every team in our position in recent years have had some young guy step up to the occasion to provide said top of the rotation punch:
Braves: Soroka & Fried.
White Sox: Giolito
Padres: Paddack, Lamet
We're gonna need a good story from at least one of our young guys. It's hard to account for it, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Pearson becomes that guy, or Thornton improves from his rookie season, or one of Hatch/Merryweather/Kay step up. Personally, I'm comfortable if we add one of Odorizzi, Paxton, or Walker. I don't think we're done.
Right, there's some legitimate upside to Matz which makes him interesting. Also had a velo bump in 2020 and it's seems like his movement profile hasn't changed. Just got hammered for whatever reason.
I trust the front office's valuations here completely. Just need to let it play out.
Definition of a meh trade. Mets get very little. We get very little. Nothing worth losing sleep over.
Still hoping we get another mid-rotation starter.
This is pretty crazy: After all the trades Pirates have made the last year, they only have $3M in guaranteed commitments for the 2022 season, and $0 beyond that.
I'd be shocked if they didn't add a starter. Probably just means we're out on Bauer, but I'm guessing we're still in on Odorizzi, Paxton, Walker etc. Trades could still happen too.
Kinda wished we got Gausman for the 3 years $40M we offered. He really looked like he figured something out in San Francisco. And his stuff is disgusting.
Marcus Semien puts the Jays 3rd in projected WAR according to Fangraphs.
Atkins really out here building a super team. Get a couple pitchers and call it an offseason.
I just noticed that we have the 7th best pitching staff according to Depth Charts which seems fairly optimistic. It projects our pitching for 15.9 fWAR, which is better than the Nationals, Braves, & Rays. Seems like their model expects Ray, Stripling, & Roark to bounce back, and it's still bullish on Pearson (2.5 fWAR). I'm confident that Ray and Stripling can bounce back. A little less so on Roark, but I can see him going out there and soaking up innings at a league average basis.
Fun fact: Signing Bauer would push us to 2nd best projected pitching staff in the majors!
The Giants are odd because their core is comprised of older, quad-A types who have seemingly broken out: Donovan Solano, Alex Dickerson, Mike Yastrzemski, Austin Slater, Darin Ruf, almost all at least 30. This on top of Brandon Belt, Buster Posey, Evan Longoria, Brandon Crawford who are already on the older side. They definitely seemed like they overachieved this season, and it's not like they have a good farm system that is producing major league talent just yet. I don't think Bauer chooses SF if he sticks to his guns about wanting to be on team that is competitive.
I think the Jays have a good shot too, but I think most teams value him well below his absurd asking price.
Cesar Hernandez would be a nice add. Really good defensively, versatile around the infield, switch hitter, high OBP guy.
Shouldn't be too expensive either. Probably 2 years at $16M or something?
So who get's DFA'd when Springer needs to be added to the 40-man? It'll come down to Fisher and Davis.
I'm thinking they are still enamoured enough with Fisher to give him another shot. Also fits better in terms of handedness.
I'm guessing it's all but officially done and they're waiting for a trade to go through.
Would be kinda awkward to sign Brantley while we have 4 starting calibre OF in Grichuk, Teoscar, Springer, and Gurriel. You then would have 5 OF with the forgone conclusion that someone absolutely will be dealt.
edit: sure enough, that is what Rosenthal is apparently saying:
I find it at least a little interesting that the Jays did $150M over 6 years instead of 5. Same total money, Springer is still palatable at $30M/yr, and you get out of the contract earlier. It seems like there's more advantage to get that money off the books earlier and get access to that roster spot as well compared to saving $5M per year.
May be reading way too much into it, but it could be a deliberate move to save AAV for another big move? I mean it could be smaller-to-medium moves too, but that's less exciting!
