  1. Well first, there is a clear difference between paying a premium for everyday position players/starting pitchers & relievers. Second, for the White Sox, it kind of makes sense to overpay for a reliever because they're trying to make a deep playoff run and the rest of their team is looking relatively complete. Let's try spending our money on actual holes such as CF, INF, SP instead of spending $13.5M/AAV on a high end reliever, which is one of the last pieces we really need. This front office picked up Anthony Bass from the waiver wire and Rafael Dolis from Japan just last year and always have had moderate success building at least average bullpens. It's never been a problem for them.
  2. Yeah. They're not comparable at all. Roark is also making less than half the total value of Hendricks contract. Roark basically has to eat up 150 innings on a league average basis to be worth it. Hendriks has to produce like he did the last 1 and 1/3rd to be worth it (which he may, just the track record of free relievers actually doing that isn't great).
  3. The example you used yourself should serve as a cautionary tale for giving relievers that much money. Melancon was paid $64M because he posted a 2.25 FIP and 213 ERA+ the 4 years leading up to the deal. After he got paid, he produced a 120 ERA+ and 3.18 FIP, which is good but hardly worth the contract and fairly replaceable. Unless you're posting elite numbers, that much money in a reliever isn't worth it. There's been maybe 2 relievers in recent years that got sizeable free agent deals that panned out. Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller (with the Yankees), and that's pretty much it. Go take a look at the top 10 highest paid relief pitchers and you'll find the vast majority of them aren't living up to their high priced contracts.
  4. It's essentially 4 years $54M. Either they retain him for $15M for that 4th year, or buy him out for the same amount. The only cost at that point will be a roster spot, so good chance they do retain him just to spread the money out. Makes it a little better, but I doubt we matched that. It'll be interesting to see what this does to the reliever market. (We really should've claimed Brad Hand on waivers....)
  5. $18M a year for a reliever... Glad we passed on that lol.
  6. Even if its not us, buyers using the trade market to fill out their roster is inherently better for us when it comes to free agency.
  7. So this guy apparently has real sources within the Cubs and he tweeted this... Bryant/Contreras/Baez trade?
  8. I think the Mets are out on Springer too. Cohen has said that he's not against going over the tax, but it's unlikely to be the case in the first year. Plus, they probably want to keep payroll open for midseason additions. I do think they make another relatively significant addition. I wouldn't be surprised if they get Jackie Bradley Jr. for CF or Brad Hand for the bullpen. If I were them, I'd add another decent starter, because that's probably the area of least depth and most volatility. But I don't think they make another huge splash. What's transpired in the market so far actually make me more confident that we'll land one of the marquee free agents. The Padres and Mets may have made their big moves through trades and might be out of the top end of free agent market. That's a great thing for us. Unless there is a team like the Giants or Nats that are willing to drop big cash overnight (haven't gotten that indication by reports), then there's going to be guy that falls right in our laps.
  9. I hope the package gets “leaked” so we can see who was involved. Would be interesting.
  10. I think they'd rather sign another starter. They just added McCann & Lindor to a team that was Top 3 in OPS in the NL. If anything goes wrong with the Mets next year, my guess is it'll be because lack of starting depth (like this year). Who knows with Cohen though. I wouldn't be surprised if he does still want to throw money at Springer.
  11. This Yahoo Japan article once translated says the Sugano is holding out for the same guarantee as Yusei Kikuchi got (4 years $56M), but he hasn't gotten that offer yet. Seems pretty high for a 31 year old unproven commodity. Kiley had predicted 2 years $24M. I think we'd even be willing to do the Happ contract (3 years $36M), but anything more than that might be a bit much. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/fc78e66370c89c622d02362a310f36d85541ece8?source=rss
  12. We do get quite a bit better in that scenario, so hard to be disappointed in the conventional sense, but at this point, anything short of one of Springer/LeMahieu/Bauer/Realmuto/Lindor would leave me a little disappointed. Probably unfair to the front office, whose valuations I trust and who promised on making the team significantly better (and did), but after a long drawn out winter and dreaming of Springer/Lindor, that'll be tough pill to swallow lol
  13. A Kirk for Kluber trade last year could’ve had a chance to be an all-time bad trade. Indians going after catching is interesting though. I wonder if they’d be interested in Jansen as the core piece coming back in a Lindor trade. Would be less thrilled about giving up Kirk, but I wouldn’t be against it if Lindor comes with an extension.
  14. Moreno update: Slashing .373/.471/.508 through 18 games now with 11 walks and 6 K.
  15. Lourdes Gurriel also had to be sent down to AAA to figure it out which is what we wouldn’t be able to do with Kim. I understand if it were a 2 year deal, but 4-5 years is too long to have someone waste a roster spot if it turns out they can’t hit. And there’s probably a make up component to this as well. If he thinks he’s that good, he should have no reservations about going to the minors to figure stuff out if needed, especially when he’s going to be getting his major league guaranteed salary while there.
  16. Who says we're offering bargain bin prices? We literally went the extra year to sign Ryu when no one else would. There's even less buyers this year than last. There's going to be at least one top guy who has no choice but to take our money if he wants to get paid.
  17. We should’ve packaged Trent Thornton, Riley Adams, and Dasan Brown and gotten him instead.
  18. This seems like a pretty low return for Darvish if true. We definitely could’ve topped that...
  19. Rumours swirling that it’ll be Cronenworth and Luis Campusano for Darvish and Caratini (Darvish’s personal catcher).
  20. What an insane 12 hours for Padre fans. If they do get Darvish, how do they stack up against the Dodgers? Rotation: Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Davies, Paddack with Gore waiting in the wings (assuming he’s not traded) Top 5 offense. Not sure about the bullpen though beyond Pomeranz.
  21. It might be more than trying, their most trusted reporter is saying that the framework of a deal is done and Darvish could be a Padre by end of day lol
  22. Flurry of tweets regarding Ha-Seong Kim. Seems like an announcement may be imminent:
  23. Interesting note that Mejia is a year away from arbitration. I forgot he missed a large portion of a year due to injuries and was on the major league DL accruing service time.
  24. I would’ve expected better pieces on top of Patino for Snell tbh. Last I read, there were question marks about Mejias ability to stick at catcher (plus he hasn’t really hit in almost a seasons worth of PA’s) and Hunt is a prep catcher with okay minor league numbers. Wilcox is a nice get, but still feels a little light for the Rays.
