    It's not like they're leaning on TJ Zeuch out there, Baz is an elite talent. It's okay to put rookies in the spotlight if they have elite talent. David Price was pitching meaningful innings for the Rays in the World Series basically straight out of college and it worked.

    You guys are really nailing Gibby without full context. He was literally evaluating core pieces of team at the major league level that year. Remember when Pillar started out in LF because we didn't know he was a good fielder yet? Miguel Castro was our closer out of A ball. Smoak was still considered a failed prospect at the time. We were still giving major innings to the corpse of Jeff Francis and Bo Schulz. Once Anthopoulos traded for a decent bullpen, Gibby really managed the team well.

    I haven't seen a ton of Kirk behind the plate, but it's clear to me that he's still developing and a notch below Jansen and the masturbator defensively. If the Jays were rebuilding, or if his bat wasn't so MLB-ready, Kirk would probably be catching every day in AAA this season. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the one guy Kirk calls a good game with (Ray) has the simplest pitch repertoire. Basically: "throw the ball as hard as you can down the middle to get ahead, then wipeout slider for the K". If he had a little more seasoning behind the plate to catch really complicated guys like Ryu and Berrios, or if guys like Springer didn't need the DH slot, he would've played a lot more. It's also clear that Charlie plays favourites (Espinal, Dolis, McGuire), and Kirk isn't one of them. Pinch hitting Kirk for a pinch bunter in a leverage AB really showed what Charlie thinks of Kirk. I think next season, Kirk and Jansen develop into a very productive C/DH defense/offense combo.

    I chose 2018-2020 because it was the time period Semien played a full time SS and after his true talent defense seemed to shift for the better. I'm making the assumption he's not the same horrible defender from 2015. Including raw 2021 defensive metrics to compare Semien to Bichette as a SS is completely wrong. Semien played 2B this year. That's like saying Gurriel is a better outfielder than Springer because you counted all of his DH games. Ignoring Semien completely, Bichette rates in the bottom tier of SS defenders over his career. Over that time, his performance on the field has matched the metrics (in my opinion). He looks like he's improving, we shall see what his defensive ceiling is.

    I didn't watch him play SS in Oakland so I can only go by the metrics. His defensive value from 2018 to 2020 is third best of all SS in baseball, behind only Simmons and Lindor. So yeah, he's an elite defender by the numbers.

    Semien is too much of a professional to say anything, but it must be hard for a gold glove calibre SS to watch an inferior fielder play your position. Moving Semien to 2B as a rental made perfect sense. But if the Jays are serious about keeping him long term, they'll need to offer him the SS spot.
