    It's not just performance. Vlad needs to consistently demonstrate maturity, work ethic, and leadership over the next two years to justify a high-risk investment. Handing an unearned contract to a lazy headcase is a recipe for disaster, examples from the past are too many to count.

    I don't like this move at all. The splitter is purely a whiff pitch that works when you have fastball command, which Nate doesn't have. I'm sure this sounds old school but wild pitchers need to learn to repeat their delivery to develop command, not tinker with 5 pitches looking for the tiniest of advantages. The guy has like 75 IP in his entire career with garbage command. If I'm Whiskey Pete, I tell Pearson to just spam fastball and one breaking ball. Probably curveball because it has less tilt than the slider so easier to control. If he learns to flip the curveball for a strike just once per AB hitters will be overmatched by the fastball. I really don't like how the team develops pitchers.

    Greg Maddux should've eaten hot dogs like Kirk. He would have thrown 99+ and gone down as the greatest pitcher of all time.

    This happens once every couple of seasons. The front office gets tunnel vision on a marginal guy with a profile that they like and they essentially fall over themselves to get him. Remember when we were chasing Jay Bruce for years? Before that it was Morales. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

    Huge surplus potential on this deal. Kansas City is guaranteed 7 years of control at $18M AAV which is less than what Guerrero will make this year in arbitration. These are the kinds of risks that can lead to championship teams if they allocate the surplus from this deal wisely

    That is absolutely a possibility.

    Kirk's weight is a problem, but there's hope that he can stick at C long term. Bengie and Jose Molina caught heavy innings into their late 30s. Kirk also isn't tall, which might be even more taxing for a catcher than being obese. Combine the with the one knee catching fad and frequent DH days and Kirk might be okay. Losing weight will only help him.

    Schneider is quite bad about pulling the trusted guys early. They basically target 100 pitches every start regardless of results.

    Varsho has thousands of innings of professional catching experience, some as recent as last year. You're talking about imminent injury risk like we're putting Guerrero back there. I didn't even feel strongly about it until you immediately started throwing a tantrum. It's like 3 pages back, reread it. I even tried to end it but you had to be a fungus about it

    I know younger Jays fans haven't seen a lot of playoff baseball in their lifetimes, but some of the absolutely most extreme moves have happened in the postseason, and not particularly rarely. If Varsho ever ends up catching and using pitchcomm for the first time, I would much rather it be in a joke game rather than in front of 40,000 screaming fans with the adrenaline rushing

    Today is Kikuchi's scheduled side session and he will almost certainly be coming out of the pen for this coming series Varsho has been doing pitch calling prep ever since Jansen got hurt. He specifically said he hasn't been doing any physical catching because he didn't want to get sore while the games were still meaningful. This is his only chance to get reps before the playoffs
