    4th or 5th starter pitches 5, maybe 6 innings. 4 relievers pitch the remainder of the game. v. Opener pitches the 1st 4th or 5th starter pitches innings 2 through 6 or 7 3 relievers pitch the remainder of the game. What is the difference? besides the second configuration gives the 4th or 5th starter - and the team in general a better chance to succeed.

    Let's not ignore he was the 29th most valuable pitcher in baseball last year (from the fangraphs qualified list - I'm sure there's a few more non-qualified guys ahead of him). Eric is clearly racist against Canadians We can't stand for this type of discrimination.

    I mean we turned 1/4 of a season of Liriano into Teoscar. He obviously has warts, but there's no reason to claim it's idiotic to think Espinal might be an asset.

    Surely to god we're at the point where we no longer talk in absolutes. tercet looks like a moron when claiming anyone who thinks he's anything more than a AAA folder is on crack. There's a lot to like about Espinal. Solid walk rate, low K's, high % of line drives and fly balls. There's obviously a wide spectrum of potential results - all with their own likelihood (which someone smarter than me could probably estimate). What on earth is wrong with simply pointing out this guy had a good season - made some improvements and could be a decent asset moving forward?

    Except the spike in runs per game (1993 to 2010) eerily lines up with the steroid era. The # of runs per game per game over the last few years is similar to what we saw from 1980 to 1993. The other obvious factor in the reduction in runs is the improvement in pitching - and the way teams use pitching. What if limited the shift doesn't work? Are they going to put governors on our pitchers? Every pitch over 95 MPH is an automatic ball - we need more scoring! Changing the rules to address one component of a perceived issue seems incredibly short sighted. Baseball is cyclical - it always has been. Don't f*** it up with stupid rules.

    What's next - they'll draw a line on the infield that fielders must stay behind to prevent them from playing in on a bunt - or to cut down a run at home? Will infielders be allowed to play deep with their feet in the outfield? This is beyond stupid. Hopefully Shapiro can knock some sense into these f***s.

    All I can picture is the setting on my high school volleyball team. He lines up on the side (in the rotational position he has to) and then when the ball is put into play, he runs into the middle to become the setter again. Would we see an infielder standing right on the line and then moving as the pitcher goes into his windup? That's stupid.

    Fair enough - that was more of a tongue and cheek joke anyway. Further to your point - it's interesting to see guys like Jeff Blair went from voting for Manny Ramirez last year - to removing him from his ballot this year (while still not voting for 10 people). Last year he was good enough, but not this year? I think the dickhole Blair has some personal rule about not voting for 10, so that's probably his flawed explanation.
