I think the missing info is whether the $585M Ortiz number included deferrals or not. I think Ortiz said Vlad was worth the $585M and Vlad's said he wants present day value money, so I think when Vlad says his counter offer didn't reach $600M and you see Ortiz suggest $585M, you assume that's present day value.

I know you are and nothing anyone says will change your mind, but you shouldn't be so firm in this position.

I'm not following this logic (not just yours, but others too). We started with the David Ortiz comment on $585M, then we heard Vlad's camp say their "counter" didn't reach $600M, which suggested his initial offer did and made the Ortiz $585M number seem legit. Then we heard the Jays offered about $500M with deferrals and the present day value was between $400M and $450M. I think most intelligent fans would say "Vlad's asking for way too much and the Jays offer was quite reasonable". After all of this, there's a new leak that Vlad's "real" number is $500M without deferrals. If we think the team leaked this, then are we suggesting Vlad has come back to the team, post "deadline" and told them that $500M is his number? Or, perhaps, do we think the Ortiz # was too high and Vlad's actual counter offer to the Jays was $500M? We think the team wants to leak this to show fans the 2 sides aren't far apart? Doesn't this also potentially paint a picture that the Jays FO was too cheap to add like $5M AAV to get the deal done? Couldn't it also break some form of mutual trust/respect with Vlad? I guess maybe it could help with his marketability this year - as I could see fans turning on him if he's viewed as a greedy, delusional c*nt. It seems more likely to me that Vlad's camp leaked it to show he truly wants to stay in Toronto and that he's willing to negotiate a compromise. The timing just seems odd. Like he didn't think the Jays would hold their ground and let the deadline pass without a deal or something and now he wants to negotiate further... Am I missing something? We'll probably never really know what's correct. It's a pretty bizarre situation.

Pop seems like one of those guys who needs to spend the offseason in the lab - tinkering with tunneling, pitch shape, etc. to find the right combo. The arm talent is elite - he just needs the right tweak it seems.

So why are these numbers being leaked now? I have to assume this comes from the Vlad camp, which is odd, seeing as he set the internal deadline. Is he trying to save face and have fans believe he's actually being reasonable after repeatedly telling them he wants to be a Jay forever? If that's Vlad's true number, then why didn't he counter with that number during negotiations? Could it be that Vlad didn't view the spring training deadline as a true deadline and thus wasn't willing to come down to his "real" number? I was worried he didn't have any reason to truly negotiate with the Jays as the only real deadline is when he hits the market. He had no reason to do anything about shoot for the stars in hopes the Jays were stupid enough to bite. I do wonder if something changed. I know $500M is an overpay, but it doesn't sound like they are "that" far apart now - it may only be $5M per season, which is the cost of spare parts. Given all the factors (face of the franchise, fan favourite, potential HOF bat, trouble attracting stars to TO, etc.) - I think you get it done, even if it leaves a little sour taste in your mouth.

I guess the Jays might be in the low $400's in present day value, but this is more encouraging nonetheless. I'm willing to meet him at $500M if he signs right now.

I think that's right around "the line" that most (intelligent) Blue Jays fans felt they could justify to resign Vlad. Vlad clearly never wanted to sign an extension unless he was grossly overpaid.

Suggesting Varsho is our cleanup hitter only helps to prove Jays24's point. Then again, we already had this discussion yesterday... We'd love to have a stronger "4th and 5th best hitter", but we have above average depth 1 through 9. We also have some upside bats who could step up and become more consistent middle of the order bats. It is what it is at this point. Outside of a deal, there's really no obvious fit who's going to drastically improve the lineup.

Just pretend Taters is the DH and Roden is the LFer. I suspect that would be the configuration a lot if Roden plays himself into a full-time role. It sure looks like they are trying to find ways to get Wagner in the lineup at various positions.
