  1. Yeah if it was really 4/80 with an option to bring it up to 5/100, then that would be a foolish thing to offer to someone you didn't want to bring back, even if you felt he would turn it down. I think more likely they knew they'd get outbid but gave him their best offer anyway in case he wanted to sign. When he didn't, they moved on quickly. Morales, Pearce, Guirrel, and a pick instead of Edwin is fine with me.
  2. Probably a combination of sentiment and ignoring aging patterns of players like Encarnacion. The Jays had Edwin at his peak from 2012-16. The Edwin that plays in Cleveland over the next three years is not going to resemble the player from 2012-16 in all likelyhood. When you pay for past performance, you end up with situations like Tulowitzki having $80m left on his deal and Martin having $60m left on his deal when both are heading towards their declines. I would not have minded EE back on a three year deal, but chances are he would have joined the other $20m a year guys as declining vets making big money when the direction Shapiro wants to take is more reasonable short-term risks. EE would have been a 10/5 player too so not exactly a tradeable asset if things went south for the team.
  3. Those bandwagon fans got over losing David Price after a winter of crying once the team played well. Same deal here. If JB and EE were re-signed and the Jays fell off in 2017, those fans wouldn't be there to support the team. Shapiro doesn't care about those fans, nor should he. THose are the easiest fans to get back, if anything.
  4. There's not a single thing Shapiro has done that suggests he wants to rebuild. He's added nothing but 30+ year old's to the roster except for Guirrel. He's trying to compete and restock the farm at the same time.
  5. Man there is no way in hell Cleveland is paying Edwin $25m at age 37. It's a 3 year deal folks. No way that option is picked up. Good for Edwin. Got a reasonable deal from a team that should be the AL Central winner in 2017. Both sides are probably happy with how it played out.
  6. That's my take as well. Chances are he sees the writing on the wall that he'll need to settle for a much smaller deal than he anticipated, and wants to plant the seeds of loyalty to save face. Which is fine, that's his prerogative, but whether the Jays would sign him to that smaller deal is the question. Losing a pick for one year of Jose seems kind of pointless. As mentioned it would have to be something like 1 guaranteed year with 1 or 2 team options. That's the only way I can see Shapiro doing it.
  7. Morosi going to hashtag BlueJays until a move actually happens.
  8. Granderson makes sense. Put him in RF and platoon him with Upton. However, if the Mets want an actual prospect, then that's probably the hurdle.
  9. Man, if JB/EE end up in Oakland and Tampa due to lack of other options, that would actually be pretty sad.
  10. Just take Bastardo from the Pirates for nothing. At least it would be a one year commitment. The Pirates would probably love to get rid of $6.5m of salary.
  11. Trollosi hashtagging the Jays again while reporting nothing. Dude knows how to get eyeballs at least.
  12. Atkins and Shapiro only make moves on Friday. The Pearce signing was an aberration.
  13. Yeah at this point just having the roster spot for someone with more value to the team would be an asset. Swap him for a reliever who had a bad season ,or maybe there's an overpaid OF that the Jays can take from another team and use Smoak as a salary dump. I get the sense that the front office likes him though. They wouldn't have extended him if they didn't.
  14. There has to be a team out there that needs 1B depth and has a crappy reliever making somewhere between $4-8m. Just make the swap. Smoak for Jason Motte, or something. Whatever.
  15. Well if there's one positive to Gibbons, it's that he seems to hate Smoak as much as the rest of us, so that platoon idea may not last long. It better not.
  16. They offered Edwin 4/80 before free agency even began and were in on Fowler. Both would have cost picks. They may not want to lose a pick for Joey Bats, but they clearly don't mind losing one for the right players. In this case, both the players they were willing to lose one for decided to decline the offers.
  17. Revere scares me only because Gibbons would bat him lead-off. Other than that, I mean he might be able to bounce back offensively and be an adequate LF option (maybe a 1 WAR type) so it may not be an awful move in isolation, but yeah, I think I'd rather just start Pompey and hope he produces. The Royals could probably get a 3 WAR season out of Dyson even as a 4th OF, but they have 3 starting OF's and a bunch of 4th OF types. They'll have to make a trade of some sort. Dyson would be such a good fit, but if the Royals want an MLB talent, then it will be hard to find a match. You think they'll take Harold Ramirez? Doesn't strike out and hits for average....that's like a Royals prototype.
  18. Probably a combination of a mutual dislike between the FO/Jose, and the FO thinking they could replace Jose's wins for less money and keep a draft pick on top of that. Of course, if no other team signs Bautista, then things become dicey because the pick becomes pointless.
  19. I'd trade Osuna when he starts to get expensive. He shouldn't be untouchable at all. Young relievers don't always stay good for long.
  20. Great fit and great salary over the next two years (Puig). No clue what the Dodgers would want though.
  21. Or that.
  22. If Valbuena can play the outfield at even an average level, then he's a solid pick up since he can cover 3B in case Donaldson has to miss time. Good way to make up for lack of depth is getting players who can cover multiple spots. He doesn't have much sample in the OF, though.
  23. The front office has more Boston connections than Cleveland.
  24. Morales is preventing an Edwin signing, but really has no impact on JB.
  25. Since his ST rant.... - Got punched in the face and became a meme for life. - Had two separate stints on the DL. - Had his worst offensive and defensive seasons since his breakout. - Can't find a team willing to sign him as a free agent. Dude's body is is going to look like 2016 Sandoval's with all the humble pie he's been eating.
