The Jays may not want to be in a position where they sign Moss and someone else, for example, and then Bautista is out there in March still looking for a job. I don't think that would happen, as JB is too good of a player to not sign somewhere (you would think), but if they see the pick slipping away, then I could definitely see the front office just saying screw it and signing him to a short-term deal.
I really wanted 3 1st round picks, but the FA market sucks, and they don't want to trade prospects, so there's not much to choose from.
